Breed Show report from Leigh Cheetham:

The 40th Anniversary AQHAUK Breed Show got off to a slightly later start thanplanned due to a flight delay for Debbie Cooper our Reining Judge. Fortunately thecompetitors all seemed to be in a relaxed mood and within less than half an hour ofarriving Debbie was changed and in the arena with the first competitor getting theshow underway with NRHA& BR Reining Classes. The AQHA shows under both judges Jim Searles & Debbie Cooper kicked off onFriday morning with Ranch Riding. Alison Sherwood on Queens Fury was on fire inthe very well supported Amateur and All Ages classes taking a double 1st in theAmateur and a 3rd and 4th out of 14 in the All Ages behind Doug Allen on Okay MyWay and Lee Rutter with Custom Remedy. A big well done goes to Alison. Most ofthe ridden Futurity classes were also held over the course of Friday with some superyoung horses competing for the various titles. The showing day had a timely finishand was wrapped up with the arrival of a Rodeo Bull Riding Machine with acompetition and games run by the Youth Team which was a great source ofamusement to both those taking part and those spectating. On Saturday we had the Trail Classes which took place inside with a challengingpattern that had been supplied by Tim Kimura and sponsored by the lovely GillParker. This was followed by Horsemanship and some more Reining before wemoved onto the hotly contested Small Fry Class which was so closely run that wehad multiple winners!! Thanks to those that willingly loaned their mighty steeds tothese young riders. Saturday afternoon was time to thank all of our wonderfulsponsors without whom there would be no Buckles or Trophies and we were able toenjoy a Sponsors Tea which was hosted by our longstanding member Sheila

Fitzpatrick whilst watching the Halter Classes. We had a great turn out this year, theculmination of which is the British Supreme Champion which was won by JaneWallace’s ‘Make Me Invited’ with Carin Herrick’s ‘Wimpys Smart Chex’ in reserveplace and Debbie Burns ‘Lady Sudden’ taking 1st reserve. All three were adornedwith a beautiful floral garland, made and sponsored by Jayne Lerwill and what areally super picture they all made. ‘Make Me Invited’ also took the Hi PointChampion Gelding Award with ‘Lady Sudden’ taking the Hi Point Champion MareAward. The Novice Amateur Hi Point was awarded to Sue Gardner and the Novice Youth HiPoint was awarded to Katie Willis, well done to you both.Sunday was Championship Day and what a busy day it was, starting withShowmanship everyone was turned out immaculately. It was lovely to see so manyyouth riders competing in all disciplines with the Youth Team Selection Classesrunning concurrent with the AQHA Youth Classes. We hope to see much more of youand good luck for the forthcoming World Youth Cup. Another Tim Kimura trail patternutilising the letters AQHAUK in its design and some very challenging Horsemanshipand Hunt Seat Eq patterns kept everyone on their toes. Buckles or Trophies werepresented at the end of each Championship Class with the winners again adornedwith Jaynes lovely garlands for the presentation photographs. All in all it was a fabulous show, special thanks must go to all members of the ShowTeam who worked tirelessly to ensure things ran smoothly, to The Sternberg Familyfor the use of a great facility and to our Sponsors for their generosity but also to all ofyou that came and competed, whatever your discipline, both judges commented onwhat a wonderful atmosphere we had and in my opinion that is down to you! Thankswe had a blast.

I don't know about you but I am constantly rummaging in the rug boxlooking for different rugs everyday at the moment; one day it's wet and

humid and the next it's cold and windy. Experts say that those of usthat rug our horses too much probably feel the cold more, which doesn'tdo the horse any good. There's an interesting article in Horse and Hound

(link below) which gives a vet's opinion of over-rugging. What do youthink?

Youth News

The Youth Squad have been working hard over the summer. Theyattended a Youth Squad Camp in August which was held at Mikeand Jane Roberts'. Thank you to them for letting us have the useof their wonderful place and thank you to Mary Larcom for all her

hard work coaching. The weather was fantastic and a hugeamount of progress was made during the 3 days.

Several went on from there to the Garden of England Internationalwith some great results. Those that couldn't be there managed tofit in the WES National Show at Moreton Morrell and again all did

really well in their various classes.

The recent AQHA UK Breed Show was also attended by theSquad members and we hope they all enjoyed it. There has been

some wonderful feedback about the way the Squad haveprogressed throughout the year as a group and in their individualriding. Our previous Youth Director, Sheila Fitzpatrick, was there

to watch our current Squad. Their riding has come on in leaps andbounds and we are looking forward to the Youth Selection

weekend to be held in November.

Please welcome Zoe Saari!

Zoe has kindly volunteered to help in the AQHA UK office! She was down atthe Breed Show last weekend meeting members, getting to know the show andbeing a star - with a fab sense of humour! Here's her own biography:

As a new member of the American Quarter Horse Association UK I couldn’trespond quickly enough when I saw the Facebook post asking for volunteers tohelp with some administration. I’m Zoe, one for the newest members for theAQHA UK volunteer team.I had my first riding lesson when I was 6 years old (after begging my parentsfrom when I could speak), was given my first pony, Blue, by his owner when I

was 13 (best day of my life so far!) but didn’t sit in a Western saddle until I was26. I was lucky enough to go and work in Colorado on a Dude ranch in EstesPark, which turned out to be a great adventure and a quick introduction towestern riding; up to 11 hours in the saddle in one day, 6 days a week.My daughter and I moved to Nottinghamshire from Essex just over a year agoand I couldn’t believe my luck when I found out Western riding is so popularhere. I found a lovely yard and discovered Oakridge was just five minutes drivefrom where I keep my horses. Sadly, I had to have my Irish Draught crossThoroughbred, Norman, put to sleep at the beginning of February after severalbouts of Lymphangitis, devastating after nearly 9 amazing years together. As isthe story for a lot of people I suspect, I wasn’t planning to get another horsestraight away, but Frankie found me. Frankie is a yearling, registered AQHA(Whatta Chic Olena) and the horse I have wanted to own since I rode my firstQuarter Horse in the USA.As a volunteer for the AQHA UK I will be handling new membership andmembership renewal. I am hoping this role will give me an insight into how theassociation is run and enable me to get to know more people with the samepassions as me. I’m looking forward to meeting members and am excited tosee what the future holds.

Good luck to all the riders and horses going over to Aachen next weekend forQ17. Mary Larcom, Susie Anderson, Gill Parker, Evelyn Dash, Annie Gravittand Betty Edwards, to name but a few - have a ball and fly the flag! Weunderstand there are a whole load of spectators going too - have a wonderfultime, and take lots of photos too! For more information check out DQHAwebsite.
