Lifestyle Monthly knows the importance of advertising. Companies who advertise during a recession are more successful than those who don’t and we practice what we preach. This is our advertising board at the Eddie Stowbart Stadium in Widnes, through out advertising deal with St Helen’s Rugby Football League Club.

As Matt Cardle’s highlyanticipated debut single isreleased this month,

Lifestyle Monthly’s editor, AmandaMoss, was lucky enough to chat tothe X Factor winner who’s star ison the rise.

Since capturing the hearts of thenation (and the editor) when he wonlast year’s X factor, Matt has beenlocked away with some of theindustry top song writers andproducers, writing and recordinghis impressive debut album,LETTERS.

The first single of that album, RUNFOR YOUR LIFE, is also releasedthis month and W. Matt hasco-written with Eg White (Adelle,Duffu, James Morrison to name buta few)

MATT CARDLEHANGING OUT WITH

At what point in theX Factor did you actuallythink you could win it?I don’t think there was ever a point when I thought I was goingto win. Even when I was on the stage and it was just Rebeccaand I, I was quite happy thinking I was going home in secondplace. I mean Rebecca deserved to win it, she’s so sweet.

What do you think of the newjudging panel?Great. I’ve not really seen the shows as I have been too busyworking in the studio. Gar is great, of curse and Tulissa willmake her mark. Kelly has her own thing, she is gorgeous andLouis is holding the fort

Tell us about your new albumI have co written it with some of the greatest people, I havebeen very fortunate to work with Eg White and Nexus, whohas written for Ellie Goulding and Biff who has written forHurts, Kylie and Will Young.

And the story behind thesingle, Run for your LifeGary Barlow sent me a song that he had written and I knew itwas for me. I can really relate to that song. It’s all about not

being good enough for your partner and putting yourself down.He had written the words that I was trying to express, he hadmastered them so perfectly. I tried to write a similar songmyself but did it poorly. Gary did it well, I have seen thathappen in my own life and I was happy to get the song, it’sactually very personal.

Is there a story behind thewhole album?Yes, it’s called LETTERS because it is just that. It’s about mylife and experiences. My lyric book looks like a string ofessays. When I listen to the album I go, yeah “I can relate tothat.” It’s not deep but there are some nice thoughts andemotions.

Have you been star struck byanyone whilst working on this? Not at all. When I was on the X Factor there were people

coming and going all the time, There was Danni and Kylie,

obviously. Every week there would be special guests, like

Helen Bonham Carter was in the corridor one time. Tey all just

roll around and the X Factor numbs you to the celebrity . And

at the end of the day they’re just a bunch of people who

happen to be on the telly. They’re just normal people really.

You are the first X Factorwinner not to be signed to SimonCowell’s label, Syco. That’s quite anachievement, How did you manage tobreak away?It was really sweet of Simon to put his faith in me and release me to ColumbiaRecords who put in a bid for me. He understood that Columbia was a better placefor me as I am not really a pop act. I am so happy there, they’re not a pop label, they’ve given us some great music like Kings of Leon and Kasabian, of whom I ama huge fan

Have you had control of your musicaldirectionDefinitely. I know exactly what I want to do. I have been song writing for years, it’snice that people are finally listening to what I do now. I am all about longevity, Iwork hard and plan to release four, five albums. I want to be around a long time

What’s important to you in thisindustry, Is there anyone you wantto work with?Katy Perry would be good. And Rihanna of course.

Have you spoken to Rihanna since yoursteamy duet last year? She is really sweet, she called me to congratulate me after I won last year. I reallydo want to see her again.

Have you a message for your Liverpoolfans?I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you to everyonewho has supported me, I am overwhelmed by the support I have got. My dad is ascouser, he is from Knotty Ash so you could say I am home grown and have somegood roots in Liverpool. The northern crowd is always so vibrant.

Are you watching this series of theX Factor? So far I have only managed to see snippets as I have been in the studio a lot ofthe time

Do you have a rider? No of course not, I lead a very simple life. I just like my beer and Haribos… and myguitar. And when I am not writing or recording music I just chill out with a few beersand a DVD, or I might go skateboarding and listen to my ipod.

What’s been the biggest surprise toyou this year?I realised that anything is truly possible if you set your mind to it. The X factor wasa once in a lifestime experience but it has changed my life

Do you still live with your parents?Ha ha no, I have moved out. I live with Aiden (also in last year’s X Factor). I’mstill in touch with a lot of last year’s X Factor people, we became close as weexperienced so much together. But I am still down the road from my parents

It’s Liverpool Fashion Week this month, have you had a makeover since theseries ended last year?No I have kept the same look. I would describe it as Broke Back Mountainwithout the Stetson! I just love my checked shirts, jeans and work boots. I alwaysdo my own clothes shopping, I don’t want a personal shopper just yet.

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL FOR UK WOMENShopper poll sees £1.1billion clothes items unworn due to bad fit!

British women are becoming more disillusioned with inconsistent retailer sizing as a recent poll shows that UK wardrobes hold over 45.7 million unworn items due to bad fit or wrong sizing.

According to a survey commissioned by Warrington-based Golden Square Shopping Centre, shoppers have an average of four unworn items in their wardrobe that they haven’t worn with 58% saying this is due to issues with the wrong size and bad fit.

In reaction, the centre is offering shoppers it’s bespoke Style Simulator - a 3D body scanner which uses the latest technology to fully scan and record a person’s body with a fully rotational image, then giving them a list of their perfect sizes in different retailers.

The Style Simulator will be in the centre this Friday and Saturday, with the added benefits of personal stylists offering individual style advice (shoppers can book a session on www.go-style.co.uk/style-simulator).

The UK survey of over 1,000 18-60 year old women also showed that shopping is harder than it used to be. 87.2% of those asked said that they are now different sizes in different shops with this statistic rising to 93% for the 36 and over age group.

With an average spend per item of £24.19, differences with sizing can prove costly for shoppers; especially when one in ten shoppers have a shocking ten or more items left on the rail that they haven’t worn (a quarter of the over 55s fitting into this category).

Sizing confusion also means that many people are unsure about what their size actually is. Two thirds of women asked said that they believed their family or friends thought that they were fatter than they really are with this rising to a staggering 77.6% for the West Midlands. Ian Cox, Marketing Manager at Golden Square said: “Shopping is the ultimate leisure pastime and we regularly listen to our customers to ensure we

respond to their retail needs to help make their shopping trip even more successful.”

Women from the West Midlands are the most disillusioned

with an average of five unworn items in their

wardrobe, whereas the South East have the most issues with retailer differences with a huge 95% being different sizes in different stores.

The savviest shoppers are from East Anglia, with a

quarter of those questioned having no unworn items in their

wardrobe, whilst the over 56 age group are the worst hoarders with the

41-45 age group following closely in second place.

Ian Cox adds: “To help give UK women some real ‘Retail Therapy’ we are bringing in the latest in UK body-shaping technology with our Style Simulator event. Our new sensor machine, which will scan customers for free, is a wonderful solution ensuring our shoppers have a clear size and style guide for all Golden Square retailers.”

The team from the shopping centre’s fashion website go-style.co.uk will be hosting the special ‘Style Simulator’ event in the centre on Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October.

Choosing a name for a children’s designer fashion

boutique that is contemporary and modern, rather than young and childish, is not an easy task – but BOYMEETSGIRL certainly hits the nail on the head!Clare King founded BOYMEETSGIRL to compromise between the parents’ request for good-quality, durable clothing, and the child’s desire for en-trend, fashionable pieces. Clare has worked hard, selecting pieces from such fashion houses as Chloe, Ralph Lauren, Lili Gaufrette, Petit Bateau, Monnalisa, D&G Junior and Scotch & Soda, all of which have been chosen precisely because of their effortless combination of beautiful designs and high-quality, durable garments. What makes BOYMEETSGIRL so unique is the carefully thought-out blend of different brands, hand-picked to bring together a collection which keeps the individual child in mind. The clothing is not chosen by collection alone, but is considered for the occasions for which children would like to wear these beautiful garments, from parties to the park, from holidays to a family get-together. As a mother of two fashion-conscious boys, Clare knows her target market extremely well!Clare’s favourite brand for this Autumn/Winter is Junior Gaultier. It has refused to submit to the dull and boring greys and blacks that so often infest the wardrobe as the temperature drops, but instead has some great fun, bright colours combined with contemporary styles to suit all ages! BOYMEETSGIRL supports the ethos that youngsters need guidance to help create a confident, flattering appearance to really grow as individuals. Clare King says: “I buy with great care and I love all the clothes I buy. If my passion can come over to the customer and entice them to buy something, then even better!”

Im so happy with some pictures I’ve just got back from my latest job. I did a photoshoot recently for a designer based in Woolton Village called She Shea. It was for a lookbook for her A/W 11 collection. The owner Jess was lovely as was the photographer Matt Ford. They made it a fun, easy day. Every item is made to measure and I have to say I absolutely love certain pieces of her collection. My favourite has got to be this dress which would be perfect for any night out. I love the femininity of it. You can check out her website for more gorgeous fi nds... www.sheshea.com

Recently me and my friends went into Manchester to a club called Sankeys. We watched Laidback Luke and he was brilliant. The last time we saw him was in Ibiza and the atmosphere was just as good. We managed to get in the VIP which made it soo much better as we were really up close to the stage and the bar!

I also went for a couple of drinks at a beautiful restaurant bar called Australasia on Deansgate in Manchester centre. It was a stunning bar based underground. I cant wait to try out the restaurant on my next visit.

Liverpool Fashion Week is soon approaching and I’m really hoping to get to one of the nights shows. There are some great designers along with lots from the high street so I may need to sneak a peek of the latest fashions and make a great night around Liverpool of it whilst I’m there.

I have been shopping a lot yet again. My latest purchase is this gorgeous kimono from Miss Selfridge. I love it! I also got these amazing leather shorts. They are great for anything from day to night. I cant wait to team them with a chunky oversized jumper and tights My best jewelry purchase of the month is these feathered earring from Miss Selfridge. I loved all feathered jewelry and accessories during the summer but these take it through to the Autumn/Winter for a glam night time look. I will defi nitely be wearing it all at some point over the next weekend for my upcoming birthday celebrations where I’m off to Newcastle for the weekend with my closest friends. Let the party planning commence!

in Neston in the Wirral has won3 AARosettes.

We chatted exclusively to David Gillmore,Executive Chef on his remarkable achievement

David took on the role as Executive Chef18 months ago. Previously he worked at theChester Grosvenor.

What was your biggest challenge? To get people to my way of thinking. I came from a fivestar hotel with a Michelin star restaurant, I wanted tomaintain a high level of standards for chefs. What is your ethos in the kitchen?I feel that I run a relaxed kitchen, which not many chefs areknown for that! But I want people to want to enjoy comingto work because then they will be more creative and producea better quality of work. How important is it for you to source local produce.I definitely support this. The furthest we buy from is NorthWales, but that is on our doorstep. There's masses of the finestingredients grown locally in our region. What spurs you on at work?I have always wanted to be a chef, I enjoyed working withfood as a child and when I was at school I took the decisionthat I wanted to go down this route and I have worked myway up. It's a great achievement. What do you love about working at Thornton Hall? The fact that it is an amazing independent hotel means thatI am almost working for myself and not a chain of hotels thatis led by lots of people internally. I have more of a free roleto be creative here and that is what drove me to get the 3 Rosettes.Do you have a signature dish?People always ask me that and I say, what is that? Every dish has mysignature on it!If you're asking me what my favourite recipe is then Iwould have to say that I tend to swerve to deserts because I have a sweettooth. But I like making everything. What is the best thing about your role?I can push boundaries and create what I want. My job is very interestingand I am fortunate to work with a great team of people, all of whom areas keen as I am.How do you feel about winning 3 Rosettes? You are the only hotel inMerseyside to have achieved that.Nervous really because now I have to keep that high standard. I am confi-dent in what I do and I am extremely proud of it, I never expected it. Younever know when the judges are going to come and visit the hotel so forthem to bestow 3 Rosettes on us is great. But I feel more pressure now togo one step even better and improve the dishes even more.

The look I created for India is very clean and fresh, with a hint of definition that adds a smouldering effect to this simple natural finish.

Healthy and well moisturised skin is the first thing to consider when applying make-up, therefore investing in good skincare and making time to care for your skin daily will really make a difference to your make-up application. Personally I love St Ives blemish & blackhead control apricot facial scrub used 3 times a week to keep skin clear and the Chanel Hydramax moisture range used once or twice daily to keep skin beautifully hydrated (although this is expensive it will last you for ages).

To create India’s look I started by prepping the skin. Using a using a light moisturiser or primer to protect skin and create a smooth base is essential, I used Clarins beauty flash balm that tightens pores and brightens the skin. I then used Benefit’s Erase Paste to cover up small imperfections and to brighten under the eyes, I like concealer to be a shade lighter than foundation and of a creamy consistency. Following this I used Bobbi Brown moisture rich foundation to create a soft and creamy finish, this product is a great addition to your make-up bag as it is buildable and easy to blend making it great for light, medium and full coverage. To set the make-up in place I used Mac Prep+Prime transparent finishing powder, giving the skin a flawless finish.

For the eyes I used Urban Decay’s Naked eye shadow palette, using a soft brush I applied Virgin across the whole eyelid up to the brow bone paying particular attention to the inner corners and not forgetting a sweep under the bottom lash line. On the outer corner blend Toasted from the lash line to the socket line and using this same colour smudge across the bottom lash line blending out the edges. Finally using Darkhorse define the socket line then blend into other shades using a clean fluffy brush. For this look no mascara is needed however a clear mascara or Vaseline applied with a lash wand can sometimes tidy and define the lashes.

Enhancing the eyebrows is not only very fashionable right now but is a great way to show off eyes without over loading delicate areas with cream shadows, liners, and mascara. My favourite product for eyebrows is Benefit brow zings, using the angled brush and the cream colour I swept the inner eyebrows upward then lengthened the eyebrows outwards to create a slightly messy but elegant eyebrow.

To finish the look I used a hint of bronzer to define under the cheekbones and a dab of Vaseline in the middle of the lips.

IS COMING TO LIVERPOOL!The chat show supremo, stand up comedian and best selling author comes to the Echo Arena on 25 and 26 OctoberBY JAMES RAMPTON

To book tickets log on to www.echoarena.com or call the Echo Arena box office on 0844 8000 400.

Alan Carr is one of the best – and the best-loved – comedians currently at work. And yet he never takes his success for granted. He worries, for instance, that after so many years making TV and radio shows, his fans may no longer remember about his first love: stand-up comedy.

The good news is that Alan is now reminding us of his brilliance as a stand-up by returning to the live arena for the first time in four years. He is embarking on a nationwide arena tour this autumn with an entirely new show, “Spexy Beast”. He will be coming to a venue near you very soon. So as they say in all the best adverts, book early to avoid disappointment.

The comedian, who is as warm and witty off screen as on, is really looking forward to seeing you all out there in the auditorium. Dressed in a natty dark suit – he is off to shoot a comic promo for a mate in which he plays Bond, James Bond – Alan begins by explaining why he is so eager to be hitting the road once again.

“People might have forgotten that I’m also a stand-up,” says the comedian, who hosts the hugely popular Channel 4 chat show, Alan Carr: Chatty Man. “My last show, ‘Tooth Fairy’, was four years ago now. If I were to leave a stand-up tour any longer, it would start to look like a comeback!”

“Stand-up is my safety blanket. I’m having such a great time at the moment, I hope my TV career lasts. But when it inevitably comes to an end, I’ll always have stand-up. I love doing live comedy. It’s also nice to know that I won’t have to earn money by going into the jungle and eating crocodiles’ testicles!”

That’s not going to happen! Alan is one of our most treasured comedians. His priceless sense of humour and wonderfully effortless stage presence has won him a mantelpiece-endangering number of awards. He has picked up the Best Entertainment Show for Alan Carr: Chatty Man at the 2010 TV Choice Awards, TRIC TV Personality of the Year and RTS Performance of the Year in 2009, two British Comedy Awards (Best Comedy Entertainment Personality in 2008 and Best Live Stand Up in 2007) and the Variety Club Best TV Presenter Award in 2008. Phew!

The critics have been as favourable as the awards juries. The Evening Standard called Alan, “An absolute natural onstage, a born storyteller. Sheer entertainment.” The Daily Telegraph, meanwhile, praised his, “Warmth and charm. Alan Carr captures the spirit of a bygone age of British comedy.”

And The Independent paid tribute to, “A comedian who owns the space he is working in so much, he could put up a flag.”

What marks Alan out as one of the great stand-ups is his sheer charisma – you could power the whole 02 Arena with the warmth he generates on stage. He reflects on his marvellously close bond with his followers. “I have the best fans in the world!” beams the comedian, whose debut stand-up DVD, “Alan Carr Tooth Fairy” became a number one best-seller.

“People are ever so nice. I get kids coming up wanting to hug me. At live shows, you get such a warm welcome - I receive this tremendous sense of affection from the audience. I think people enjoy the communal experience of watching comedy together. It’s such a buzz. Oh, I adore stand-up!”

Alan goes on to outline the other aspects of live comedy that he loves so much. “Within reason, you can do whatever you want,” says the comic, whose immensely entertaining autobiography, Look Who It Is! My Story, has become a best-seller, selling more than 350,000 copies to date.

“There is no editing and you’re not hanging around for the ratings the next day. I really like the spontaneity of it all. You haven’t got to cut bits out to make sure it fits the twelve minutes before the ads. That’s very liberating. Hopefully people are laughing throughout it and cheering at the end.”

When on tour, the stand-up also loves tapping into the Great British tradition of live performance. “Last time, I played St George’s Hall in Bradford, where Charles Dickens

performed A Christmas Carol for the first time. The aura in that venue was incredible – it was like I had never left. You can really soak up the atmosphere in a place like that – unlike some of the more modern venues, where the night before they’ve had Teletubbies The Musical – On Ice!”

Alan proceeds to describe his stand-up style. “It’s about chatting,” muses the comedian, who hosted two very well-received series of his game show, Alan Carr’s Celebrity Ding Dong, on Channel 4. “I’m into detailing the minutiae of life. I’m never going to do an hour on tugboats. My audience know what they want from me. The chat show has freed me up. My style is looser now. I’m happy to go off-piste.”

The comic, who currently co-hosts (with Melanie Sykes) his own Radio 2 Saturday night show, Going Out with Alan Carr, expands on the sort of subjects he will be discussing in “Spexy Beast.” “The show is about things that have tickled me that day. It won’t be about tugboats – well, only the first five minutes!

“Personal stuff always goes down well. I’ll talk about my other half and my dog. But in the end, it’s stand-up – it’s not Piers Morgan’s Life Stories. Thank God, I don’t have to burst into tears every few minutes! Rest assured, it’s an upbeat show.”

Alan also shies away from any overtly political material. “I’ve never been political,” avers the comic, who with Justin Lee Collins fronted several series of the widely-loved Channel 4 comedy show, The Friday/Sunday Night Project, between 2006 and 2009. “I recently tried to do a bit about the Middle East, but people didn’t like it. Ultimately, I’m just doing some jokes.”

“Comedy has become so big now that journalists ask for my opinion on the economy. I tell them, ‘I’m just a stand-up comedian. I’ve no bloody idea!’ I get tweeted by people saying, ‘Please, please, do a routine about Libya’. But they’re asking the wrong person. People overrate comedians. Much as I’d like to sort it out for them, I’m afraid I can’t. I half-expect people to hand me Gaddafi’s phone number and say, ‘Have a word, Alan!’”

Nor does Alan bracket himself with the more snide, clever-clever breed of comedians who populate the circuit. “I’d love to be one of those comics, but I’m not. My audience want something else from me: warmth and funny stories. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing. There is a snobbery in the broadsheets sometimes about comedy. The critics write these incredible reviews: ‘I didn’t laugh once, but what an amazing take on tugboats. Five stars’. It winds me up when people try to be clever for its own sake.”

“I recently watched a documentary about Cary Grant. Some contributors were saying, ‘He was the most unsophisticated man in the world. He never knew what wine to order. He was not good with the ladies’. But so what? He picked his roles because he knew people wanted to see him as Cary Grant. Perhaps I’m comedy’s answer to Cary Grant. Give ‘em what they want. Why not?”

As he psyches up for “Spexy Beast,” Alan can’t wait to get out there on stage and tell you all about the last four years. “Things just keep getting better and better for me,” he enthuses. “I was on holiday recently, and I picked up a magazine about house renovations. The first article I turned to had the headline: ‘Make your bedroom as camp as Alan Carr’. It’s funny when people mention your name and everyone knows what they’re talking about. It’s great when you become a byword for something.”

Alan Carr is also a byword for “outstanding stand-up.” So whatever you do, don’t miss him.

‘Alan Carr: Spexy Beast’ will be released on DVD by Universal Pictures (UK) in November 2011.

Who are you?

Boomin are Adam Langmead - 24 (Guitar/Vox), Edd Langmead -29 (Drums/Vox) and Rory O'Grady - 25 (Bass/Vox)

Howdid Boomin form?

Boomin formed in 2006 when Eddmet Rory at college and decided to starta pop/rock band along with his younger brother Adam and we've neverlooked back since.

What's the story behind the name?

Simply whether it be on nights out with friends or any good times that wehad,up or comingwewould use the term Boomin as a good thing! "Tonightis gonna be Boomin!" or "Are we Boomin?" or "I'm Boomin!" it was a clearchoice of name for us.

Describe yourmusical style

Epic Pop Rock (we arent trying to start a new genre lol ) - Pop/Rock

Why didn't you audition for the X Factor?

With us being a pop/rock band,we entered Britains Got Talent instead, andwe actually got through the judges stage with a standing ovation fromTheHoff and Amanda Holden. We were tipped for great things but due tocircumstances out of our control we were cut from the show

Who are yourmusical idols?

FreddieMercury,Dave Grohl, Jack Black...basically all those true rockers who

lived/live life to the full!

What are your plans this year?

We have just released a free e.p via Soundcloud.com/boomin which is a

warm-up for our 1st studio album which will be released in 2012. Besides

working on the album we have just sealed a support slot with Toploader

commencing on 17th October of this year and we will be headlining

Manchester Club Academy on the 12th November

How easy it is writing lyrics?

Writing lyricsactuallycomes fairlyeasybecausewe justuseeverydayexperiences.

It's hardworkwhen you forget your pen and paper and lyrics fly into your head

at the craziest of times. i.e flying down theM5or swimming at the gym.

Howdifficult is it to break into themusic industry?

I think so far it hasbeenverydifficultwith somuchof the industrybeing swayed

towards the dance/hiphop industry.Being a 3 piece Pop/Rock band it feels very

hard forus tobreakout.Even theestablishedbandsout there find it hard, wedid

a support gig with Scouting for Girls and The Script and after chatting to both

bands we knew how hard this industry could get,but it never scared us off and

thatwas even aftermeeting Jedward at the samegig.

Tell us about your tour

Weare currently slowing the original gigs down this year tomakemore room

for the progression of our album,so the 12thNovember Headline slot at Club

Academy will be our last major for this year. but next year will be Boomin

(see what i did there) with the album release and barrage of supports and

shows up and down england, all whilst searching for the right label to sup-

port our Boomin world domination.

Had a few celebs on the show this month; Myleene Klass talked to us about her new online programme bumps babies and beyond aimed at mums. She actually told us a very funny story about how she was in pain, in labour and her partner said ‘I am just going to have to move the car or we will get clamped! ‘

Also chatted to James Corden, (yes him from Gavin and Stacey), and no plans for it coming back just yet, gutted!! He did tell us what he wished he knew about being a dad 6 months ago; which was to put a tissue over his little boys tinky when changing his nappy…yes he has had it in his face!

I went to see ‘I don’t know how she does it’ at cineworld other day, with Sarah Jessica parker, not with her sadly I don’t know her she was on the big screen!! It’s a nice light hearted chick fl ick basically about a full time working mum trying to clinch the deal, be the perfect wife, perfect mother, and well I don’t think it can be done, something has to give dosen’t it? !

Hunky actor Tom Hardy talked about his new movie ‘Warrior’ on the show (I’m only going to see it cos he is such a hottie!) not because I am a massive fan of boxing, however our showbiz expert has told us that it is a really good fi lm, so one us ladies could take our other halves too and not be bored rigid! Cheryl Cole has been back in the papers lately following the return of the X factor US version …how weird was that half way through the programme Cheryl became Nicole? with just one line from new welsh host Steve Jones saying ‘a new city welcomes a new judge’ that was it, personally I preferred Cheryl. Being a fan I tried (sad I know) to copy her new beehive hair do that was in all the papers the other day.

Thank you to Faith and Lucy at Miss Mollys hair salon in Chester for creating the look very glam but I wouldn’t recommend it every Saturday ladies due to the amount of hair I lost and conditioner I had to use!!

Good news for Men sadly not for us ladies ….Man fl u is real …..yes apparently (ridiculous I know), but it seems researchers have looked at the immune systems of male and female mice subjected to different types of infections. Results found that the female mice had twice the amount of infection fi ghting white blood cells as males.

On the foggy Hallowe’en evening of Saturday, 31 October, 1874, Father Maurus Anderson of St. Peter’s Church (now Alma de Cuba) on Seel Street, was

ready to lock up the place of worship when he distinctly heard a noise outside. He opened the entrance door of the church and held his lantern out into the swirling autumn fog. The 46-year-old Catholic priest heard a low moan, and felt something cold – and wet – brush past him. He locked and bolted the door and turned, thrusting the lantern at the invisible intruder. Prayer candles were lit in the church, and the beloved pastor of St Peter’s flock bravely attempted to confront the supernatural visitant. He knew it was not his imagination when he saw the glistening wet imprints of bare feet appear on the floor of the aisle, one after the other, heading in his direction – towards the altar.

‘Who goes there?’ Father Anderson’s voice echoed throughout the deserted church, and he squinted at the faint form before him, materializing ever so slowly from a nebulous mist. The outline of a young female slowly came into focus. She had bedraggled, wet, dripping curly hair, an awful dark gash in her throat, and a long white gown upon her. ‘Mary,’ gasped the brave priest, for he recognized the ghost as that of 15-year-old Mary Maloney, a poor Irish girl. She was supposed to be living on a farm in North Wales, not dead in Liverpool, and so terribly mutilated. She stood before him, the tearful dripping spectre of a girl who had often called to his presbytery for help. She whispered to Father Anderson, and it was difficult to hear some of her words, but the priest soon got the gist. Mary had been made pregnant by her uncle, and when he discovered she was having a child, he cut her throat, carted her body to the docks and threw it into the Mersey. During a pause in the ghost’s dialogue, a golden radiant light shone from

her abdomen, and the priest could clearly see a glowing image of the unborn baby Mary had been carrying. The priest blessed the spirits of the mother and child, and Mary smiled before fading away. At first light the next morning the priest and two parishioners located the body of Mary drifting in with the tide near the Albert Dock. The police raided Bill Morris’s Lodging House at 82 Melville Place, but Mary’s uncle, George Donnelly, had already fled from his room. He had told Father Anderson only a week before that Mary had been adopted by a farmer and his wife in Wales, when in fact he was merely covering up the disappearance of his niece. Donnelly was seen in Wales a week later, and the police closed in on him, but a dense fog blanketed the area and hampered their efforts to catch the murderer. However, in the following spring, a Welsh shepherd on Cader Iris Mountain came upon the corpse of Donnelly, jammed between two crags, badly decomposed and partly pecked away by crows. The murderer was only identifiable from his red hair and several documents in his pockets. He had probably fainted from exposure whilst on the run and ended up trapped between the crags. It was poetic justice.

St Peter’s Church closed in 1978, and in 2005, after the church had lain empty and disused for so long, the bar and restaurant Alma De Cuba moved into the premises. It is said that each Halloween, eerie cold spots are felt and strange whispering voices can be heard at Alma De Cuba…

Debuting at Liverpool Fashion Week’s closing party on 22 October, the Sirens are made up of four hopefuls,

Natalie Dean, 20, Amy Liddle, 25, Alex Hughes, 19 and Sarah Gardner, 26.The band were put together after answering an advert in a local newspaper for a new girl group. Sarah and Amy, both blondes, got the job and then helped recruit two brunette singers.

The name, Sirens was picked by Sarah’s brother. She says, “Originally I thought of ambulance sirens but then I looked up in the dictionary the meaning of a sire. It said that the concept is of a powerful goddess who can capture all that comes within her reach. ““Dangerous and alluring,” Alex added.

Spokeswoman for the group, Sarah, says of their singing abilities, “Don’t pigeon hole us, we are quite edgy. We all have distinctive voices and you can hear all our ranges. One of us is soulful, one of us is quite high,, one of us is low and I have mid range, so it’s a good mix, we all compliment each other. Alex is studying performing arts at university and has knowledge in music which is also an advantage. Amy and Natalie are also trained dancers.”

The Sirens are not working on an album at present, but are hoping instead to do as many live gigs as possible.Sarah has also started songwriting. She says, “I am actually a good poet and I am writing stuff down all the time now. I have been singing since I was a young age.”Sarah says, “We have about 100 songs for us to perform, we don’t have a particular genre, there’s a bit of R&B, a bit of dance, garage and even rock. We are not what you would expect from a girl band when you hear us sing. But we are good and we just want to get out there and show everyone. We love singing and we can sing.”
