When did you first learn the saxophone? It was, funnily enough, the last of all my instruments I learnt toplay. I started with piano lessons when I was six years old, then Iplayed the bassoon which took me right through music college. Ialso played the drums and a bit of percussion but I didn’t starton the saxophone until I was 14. By then I had already learned toplay the clarinet so I sort of taught myself. It was an easytransition from the clarinet.

Why did you decide to play the saxophone?I had heard the No Jacket Required album from Phil Collins andliked the sound of it and wanted to play the saxophone.

Why did you go on Britain’s Got Talent last year?I wasn’t keen as I thought that if it went wrong I would end uphaving to go home with my tail between my legs. My wife hadmore faith in me, and more faith than I had in myself.

How did it feel walking onto the stage in front of Simon Cowelland the judges?I was nervous, but not about playing because I knew I could doit. I was more concerned with the reaction I could get as onecomment from Simon Cowell could cut you dead.. Also theyjudge you on your looks and personality and all of those thingsare quite nerve wracking. But my talent is that I can hold notes

through controlled breathing and I think that got me through.

What makes you different from other musicians.I play the saxophone differently because I had no lessons andtherefore I am not pigeon holed into the jazz genre that mostsaxophone players are. I listen to singers and I adapt to play howa singer would sing.

Who are your musical influences?Kenny G and Celine Dion who can hold big notes like I can. I alsolove Il Divo and would love to meet them. My ultimate dream isto duet with Celine Dion though.

Do you still teach music? No, not since I was on BGT. I loved it, I enjoyed teaching otherpeople and see them progress but it took up a lot of my energyand time and ultimately I wanted to play, not teach.

How has being on BGT changed your life?It has given me more freedom, more time with my family. Insteadof me doing 4 or 5 bookings a week at private parties, I can doone for the same amount of money. My private bookings haveobviously gone up and I have been aloe to concentrate on mymusic a lot more.

As the new series of Britain’s Got Talent gets underway, Lifestyle Monthly caughtup with last year’s semi-finalist, Julian Smith. The humble saxophonist talked toAmanda Moss about celebrities, Celine Dion and playing his beloved music…

Page 11: Lifestyle Monthly May 2010 issue

What happened after the BGT series finished?Well I went on tour with everyone and I have done lots of charityevents for the likes of The Red Cross and Breakthrough for BreastCancer. I was even asked by Prince Charles to play for him at ClarenceHouse which was nice and I think my management company got aletter form the Prime Minister asking for me to play at number ten. Imust chase them up on that one, although it might not be a good timewith the general election! I am currently on tour with The Soldiers so Iam quite busy.

What has been your favourite private booking? It has to be when I was flown to Monaco. I wasn’t really briefed thatmuch but I was whisked away to a very nice house that had a yachtmoored at the bottom of the garden. I performed for 14 people at adinner party. I stayed at the Hotel Café de Paris and got a taste forhow the other half live!

Do you class yourself as a celebrity?Yes to the extent that people recognise me but I can walk down thestreet without being mobbed. Yesterday I went through a drivethrough Macdonalds and the girl serving me had to stop and runround and tell all her mates who she was serving! This celebrity culturecan be a bit crazy, I’d hate to not be able to go to a supermarket likesome A-listers. It can also make you feel quite paranoid, whenthousands of people are screaming for you. It’s like living in a goldfishbowl.

What’s the nicest thing that has happened to you since being onBGTI was playing at the Royal Albert Hall, which in itself is amazing, andthen they had arranged for Kenny G to come out and perform withme. And I also performed on the Classical Stars single to raise moneyfor Haiti. But being able to play my music is just lovely.

Do you take pride in your appearance?Yes but I don’t go mad. I like to shop for clothes, my favourite shop inTK Maxx. I can spend hours in there. There is a lot of rubbish butamongst it all you can find something very individual.

Do you play the lottery and what would you do if you won?No I never buy a ticket. Although it would be nice to win as it wouldcertainly take the pressure off. I think you can only spend a certainamount of money in life- I read recently that Mike Tyson lost like, 100million and I thought how can you spend all that in a lifetime?

What have you recently spent on your credit card?I don’t have any credit cards, they are very dangerous, but I did buysome furniture- a cupboard for my TV and a Bose music system. Oh,and a rug for the conservatory. I really am very boring.

How do you chill out? With my family. I love watching US sitcoms like King of Queens andTwo and a Half Men. But you can’t top Desperate Housewives, it’s veryclever.

What three things make you happy? My kids, my music and my lovely wife.

Julian Smith will be appearing at at the Roy Castle Lung CancerFoundation Ball on 4 June in Liverpool

BREAST SCREENING BEYOND MAMMOGRAPHY.Thermal Imaging is the future of breast screening. It fits all the criteriaour Doctors and Oncologists are recommending, early detection and100% safe. With over 800 published research papers on breast canceralone, and with trials involving up to 300,000 women all indicating veryfavourable results, there is ample data to show the benefits of MedicalInfrared Thermal Imaging when used in breast screening.

Informed and concerned women are now using this safer, accurate andpainless method of breast screening in place of routine mammography. The main reason for this shift toward Medical Thermal Imaging is itsability to detect breast abnormalities, including cancer, 8-10 yearsbefore it is possible with mammography.

Most women we talk to at our clinic in Crosby have concerns about thedangerous levels of “ionising” radiation associated with mammographyand also the dangerous and painful process of clamping the breastsduring the procedure.

The ionising radiation used in mammography is known to bedamaging. As a recent study pointed out, women are not informed ofthe levels of radiation they are exposed to during routinemammography. Doctors are pointing out that the radiation absorbeddose (RAD) women are exposed too during a routine mammogramscreening is the equivalent of 1000chest x-rays in one session! Howmany women are aware of that, and how many would subjectthemselves to that amount of radiation if they were told the truth? It isfor this reason many Doctors are now saying that no healthy womanshould be subjected to these levels of ionising radiation.

Quote. If I were a woman I’d never havea mammogram.

Dr Russell Blaylock, oncologist, brain surgeonand neuroscientist.

The good news is women now have a choiceof a 100% safe breast screening procedurethat is recognised by the Medical HealthRegulatory Authority in the UK as a class onescreening device.

For more information about this revolutionaryscreening method please contact Phil or Rosaon 0151 931 5001 or visit our websitewww.safebreastscreening.org

At last, summer is finally here. It’s time tostart cycling to work, walk the dog, mowthe lawn and get the tennis racquets out, this is the time of year to really startfeeling good again. The holiday season isfast approaching and for many people it’stime to start thinking about getting inshape for the beach and what most peopleare after for the beach is the typicalwashboard stomach, so how is thisachieved I hear you ask!

Well the first thing to remember aboutachieving a fantastic six pack is DIET! Weall have a great looking torso under thelayers of fat. So my advice to you is toforget about crazy crunches that are badfor your back and posture and focus moreon eating the right food for you.

FoodMy advice on food is this, you must starteating more protein. The majority ofpeople eat a high carbohydrate diet thisneeds to be balanced out by increasingmore protein and fat. Yes is said it fat! Fatis a vital fuel source and is essential for cellformation, hormone production, prostaglandin formation and immune

response to name a few. So, without thisimportant fuel source the body cannot notfunction efficiently and this will seriouslyinhibit your fat loss goals so introduce asmall amount of healthy fat. The bestsource of healthy fat you can get is fromoily fish, this contains omega 3 which isexactly what we need.

So try this from now on, completelyreduce startchy carbohydrateconsumption, get rid of cereal, rice, pasta, bread and replace with green vegetablessuch as broccoli, asparagus, rocket, spinach, leafy greens and so on. Increaseprotein and fat intake by introducing cod, haddock, salmon, prawns, squid and trymore meats, beef, chicken, lamb and duck.Try to eat at least three meals a day

consisting of these foods and snack onfruit, nuts and natural yogurt.

Note that these foods should ideally beorganic and not processed foods in orderto get the best response from your body.

Six Pack ExercisesThe majority of traditional stomachexercises that you see in magazines andon the TV with these gimmicky machinesare bad for your back and posture so stopdoing the stupid 500 crunches per dayand learn how to train your stomach thecorrect way. Go towww.elitefitnessconsultants.co.uk and clickon the video clips page to learn how toflatten your stomach without causing backpain.

Lewis

Bailey

My first task of slimming down for the LifestyleMonthly Awards was achieved thanks to Lewis’gruelling personal training. Without his steelydetermination to change my body shape and thepressure he piled on me to change my eatinghabits there is no way I would have managed tostay so focused. He has proven to me thatmiracles do happen without going under the knifeas I never thought I would see a size 12 slide overmy hips again.

Now the goalposts have moved as it’s the dreaded‘bikini tone” time. With just three months until thesummer holidays where Cyprus beckons, Lewishas told me it is time to up my game if I am tolook half decent on Nissi beach.

And he isn’t kidding as he catapults me head firstinto the most strenuous weight lifting workout Ihave ever had to endure. Three sets of weight lifts(9 kg), interspersed with lunges and weights atthe same time. The first time I did this I went homeand had to have a lie down for three hours, I wasphysically exhausted.

Session by session though, it gets a little easierand my shoulders don’t feel like I have carriedsacks of coal up a hill anymore. However, in trueLewis Bailey style, just as I think I have overcomethe next hurdle he throws in another surprise – abplanks are the most painful and mentally testingexercise I have to experience. It really is mind overmatter as I hold my muscles in and poise withforearms and ankles with all the weight on mystomach. DIG DEEP , Lewis shouts as my bodyfalters inches from the ground and I have to pullmyself back into position.

For the last few sessions I have been wearing pinktrainers and a pink top. When I leave the studiomy face is as pink as my shoes and I have neverexperienced so much sweat outside a sauna “Howdo you feel?” Lewis asks, after he has made mesuffer 8 laps of lunges with 6 kg weights, “ As Istruggle to catch my breath, he smiles wickedlyand says, “It’s good isn’t it?”Erm at the time, no itisn’t, it’s a nightmare. It hurts, it’s uncomfortableand I am ready to collapse but a few hours later Ihave to admit it that yes, it does feel good. I havefinally been bitten by the exercise bug.

Look of the Monthby Shell Sullivan

CREDITSMakeup & Hair – Shell SullivanModel – Isabella (Boss Model Management)Photographer - Anne Brocklehurst Retoucher - Stacey Clarke

The Spring Summer catwalks were awash with fresh-faced, natural, pretty looks with bursts of colour and a soft fairytale finish to them.Think baby pinks mixed with bright corals, floaty soft hair withwispy braids, and porcelain perfect skin. “There is a backlashagainst excess, It’s about confidence now, not complication.”

This season colourful eyes are back but with a new foundsophistication as opposed to last season. Gone are the neon brightsof the ‘80s trend from winter and in their place are an array ofpastels as seen on the Nicole Farhi and Dior shows. Complexions arefresh with a flawless finish; whatever foundation you wear makesure it’s light and natural this season. Lips are in a word, pink. Yes,it’s back and was all over the catwalk in shades of soft rose - wornover deep plums to lighten the look as seen in Marc by Marc Jacobs- coral pinks added glamour at Missoni, baby pink nude glosses atMax Mara and Hermes were popular, and pops of bright pinky redsleft models catwalk ready at Prada.

For this months makeup feature, I used a light shimmer on both theinner eye and across the brow bone to highlight, lift and open upthe eye area. I applied a mid tone pink like MAC ‘Lala’ (£11) toshape the socket area. Pink and peach shades are really versatileyou can go from day to evening looking chic. I used a mineralizeblush for sheer soft colour, sweeping across cheekbones andaround the temples to complement the contoured eye. I used MACRhapsody in Two (£17.50) a swirl of light pink/ soft peach with afrost finish, perfect for the luminescent shimmer to thecheekbones. I finished the look with a matte bubblegum pink lip tryIllamasqua ‘Corrupt’ (£15) or Rimmel ‘Kiss Me’ (£4.99).

Why did you decide to set up The LipDoctor?Fab had been doing treatments as a sideline tobeing a GP since 2000 and after the birth ofour daughter in 2006 we decided that wewould like to set up a business together. Therewas such a demand for treatments of this kind,so it was a great time to set the business up.

What's the story behind the name?We wanted a catchy name that would interestpeople and one that is hard to forget.

Tell us about the clinicOur clinic is based in Maghull. Dr Fab Equizidoes all the procedures while I tend to the dayto day running of the business and marketing. We have no other staff as we like to keep itsmall and friendly, an approach which workswell with our clients.

And what do you offer? We offer a number of aesthetic proceduresfrom line and wrinkle treatments to lip plumpingand then the more advanced procedures suchas the 'virtual facelift' which is a treatmentusing a combination of dermal fillers andbotulinum toxin to volumise and contour theface to achieve facelift like results withoutgoing under the knife. We can do cheekboneenhancement and smooth out the appearanceof minor nose bumps. We also have a range ofskin treatments from the dermaroller for scarreduction to reasonably priced peels andproducts.

Tell us about your family/kidsBetween us we have five children from the ageof three to fifteen.

How hard is it juggling work with the kids?Luckily we have great childcare and family whoare often willing to lend a hand so it works well.

And you live and work in the same building, how easy is that? With the clinic being attached to where we liveit makes life pretty easy for us with regards tojuggling the kids, work and home. We dohowever work late most nights once the kidsare in bed.

Do you set yourself rules so you don't gointo the office after 9pmWe do try to but I'm afraid it never seems towork that way!

How do you spend your weekends? With family and friends, we like to eat out.Sometimes we work away but will always takethe kids with us. We sometimes makeourselves available at weekends for ourregulars if they have difficulty getting in duringtheir working week.

What's the best thing about your job?All the people that we meet, especially withpeople returning again and again. We arefortunate to have really nice clients. Sometimeswe have so much fun with them you couldhardly call it work!

What's it like living and working togetherwith Fab?A lot of people ask us this, but most of the timewe find it just fine, of course there is the oddtime when we'd happily strangle each other!!

Did you ever imagine your clinic would growto be one of the most successful beautyclinics in the north westNo, when we opened the clinic we had a smallclient base, over time and with lots ofrecommendation the business has gone fromstrength to strength, we get clients travellingfrom around the country hearing of Fabsexcellent work and they usually bring a friendback on their next appointment. Withadvertising on Radio City and in the likes ofLifestyle Monthly magazine we now have greatbrand awareness. We are really proud of whatwe have achieved.

How did it feel to win Best Beauty Clinic atthe first Lifestyle Monthly Awards?I think the fact that it was voted for by thepublic made the award extra special, it's greatto see that all our hard work has paid off!

What are you plans for the next year?Fab will be doing more training as he currentlytrains other practitioners in advancedtechniques for two companies, BioformMedical and Lifestyle Aesthetics plus we planto keep an eye out for any new products ortreatments that we can introduce.

What's your best selling treatment/product?During this time of the year we do a hugeamount of dermal filler treatments but over theyear the most popular treatment has got to bethe treatment of lines and wrinkles usingbotulinum toxin.

What can people expect at The Lip Doctor?A warm and friendly welcome with no pressureor hard sell, they can expect a great result aftertheir procedures and because we do check upappointments they have piece of mind, wepride ourself not only on the results we deliverbut also on our excellent aftercare.

Have you had to forfeit anything to getwhere you are today? Not at all it's been joy to build the company, some days it doesn't even feel like work asthere are so many lovely people that we meeteach day that even on our twelve hour days itflies by.

What makes The Lip Doctor unique? As I mentioned earlier I think it's the small andfriendly approach that puts people at ease, coupled with excellent results and aftercarethat makes us stand out from the rest. Fab isvery fussy and always looks for things toimprove at the follow up appointments. Wefirmly believe in what we do, we are quite vainand consume a lot of our own products!

Well now there is help at hand in the form of a new service from SitexOrbis. Called help5, it is available 24/7through the use of mobile phones on any network and provides a two speed dial system which is set up viawebsite www.iamnotalone.co.uk.

“It is really very simple to use,” says Simon Wainewright, Lone Worker and Response Centre Director atSitexOrbis. “You simply set up two speed dials, one we call ‘amber alert’ and the other ‘red alert’.

“You give us your emergency contact details – it could be your spouse, parents, a friend, whomever youwant – and then you are ready to go,” he adds.

Ths service costs from just £1 per week, all you need to do is press the ‘amber alert’ button on your mobiledevice, leaving a short voice message as to where you are going and how long you anticipate being there,or other messages as appropriate.

Then, if the situation escalates and you are able to make a call you canpress your designated ‘red alert’ key, and this will connect to the supportteam who will then listen and assess the situation. They will remain silentso as not to alarm those around you, however, should you wish to speakto them, two-way communication is possible with the support team, who,on your pre-agreed instructions, may also get in touch with your list ofemergency contacts.

In the unfortunate circumstance of an attack of some kind the supportteam may, if requested to do so, contact the emergency services on yourbehalf. If you haven’t set up the ‘amber alert’ prior to going out, then thesupport team can attempt to locate you through location software oncethe ‘red alert’ has been raised, and should the need arise, recordings ofthe call can be supplied and may be admissible as evidence in court.

Feeling Safe, Keeping SafeHave you ever been in a situation where you felt vulnerable; a little unsafe? It could be the time youwere walking the dog and suddenly realised there was no one else around. Perhaps an occasionwhen you were waiting alone at a bus stop or noticed some unusual behaviour. Certainly not criticalenough to warrant a call to the emergency services but a definite feeling of unease.

Lifestyle Monthly raised £310 in a charity auction for RadioCity’s Cash for Kids last year by bidding on dinner with celebrityhairdresser, Herbert. And so editor Amanda Moss, together withhusband Simon, were recently whisked away in a limo to theThe Swan in Aughton, the new Marco Pierre White restaurantand hotel, for dinner and delightful company.

Suit and tie was the dress code of the evening “I’m a little oldfashioned, “ Says Herbert, who likes to dress for dinner.

Celebrity hairdresser Herbert, started his salon over 40 yearsago with just £100 in his pocket, he is now one of Liverpool’stop success stories, ploughing much of his hard earned cashinto raising £thousands for charities.

He still works part time in his famous salon in the Bling Blingbuilding in Hanover Street, responsible for over 300 staffincluding his training school, Herbert of Liverpool Training

Centre which not only teaches hairdressing, but customerservice and management skills.

We dined on french onion soup, duck pate and palma ham forstarters, steak, lamb and vegetables for main course and ricepudding souffle and white chocolate cheese cake for desert

His philosophy: Too many people buy clothes they can’tafford with money they haven’t got to impress people they don’teven like.

Some words of wisdom from a French hairdresser: neverhave your shop on ground level so people are ale to justwalk in off the street. Make them go upstairs, if you makethem feel special they will go upstairs.

Christakis Greek restaurant in York Street,Liverpool, is one of the oldest restaurants in thecity centre. For over 25 years they have beenserving traditional Greek dishes to a stalwartcrowd of Greek dining enthusiasts. And if it’s afun atmosphere with great, well prepared andaffordable Greek food you have a taste for, thengo to christakis. Not only is the food delicious, but it’s also generously served on enormousplates. And once the food is out of the way getready for the live entertainment. Depending onthe night you choose to dine, there’s bellydancing, traditional greek dancing and, ofcourse, plate smashing.

The menu is broken down into easy to choosesections with more choice for the drinks thanthere is food- that tells you what a party nightfor are in for!

Specialising in large bookings, such as birthdayand hen parties, Christakis expects you to goand eat there and have a really good time.

I chose the grilled Haloumi cheese which wassimilar to mozzarella in texture, but salted andwith a greater depth of flavor. it was served cutinto squares and grilled to a pleasing goldenbrown served with two types of pita bread. Mymain course of roast lamb kleftico was a chunkof meat that fell away in layers, was fork tender, mild in flavours and accompanied by potatoes, rice and a well assembled Greek salad andaltogether was better than any lamb i’ve had inCyprus.

My other half chose Taramosalata followed by 2chicken kebabs skewered and succulentlygrilled to perfection. My best friend had garlicmushrooms in a sweet buttered sauce to startfollowed by the same main course as myself, while his wife had a greek salad followed bysalmon kebabs. We finished off the meal ofwith two generous slices of chocolate cakewashed down with coffees all round.

All this for a very reasonable £15 per head for 2courses, not including drinks of course. Weenjoyed the disco lights, the laser show and DJ

managed to get our friends to join in with herroutine and they received many gleeful shoutsof ‘Opa!’ and rounds of applause. It wasimpossible to stay seated, Christakis makesyou feel that you have been invited to amassive family gathering. No-one remainedseated, we danced until 2am.

Some may say suggest Christakis is in need ofa lick of paint, others may feel that thecomfortable decor makes you feel as if youhave been invited round to your greekneighbours for dinner. I am of the latter view. Icouldn’t fault the service, the staff areimpeccably friendly and made us feel like wewere part of their family. In all, surprisingly, wehad a one of the best nights out in Liverpool fora long time which was a very unexpectedpleasure.

Christakis Greek taverna

I went to Tokyo as a reporter for theNintendo Games Show back in 1993 andwas thrust into an alien world of Asiancuisine. I hadn’t eaten Japanese foodsince.

So I was a little hesitant when Sapporoinvited me and a guest to dine at theirTeppanyaki style restaurant in Duke Street,Liverpool. I need not have had anyreservations though as within seconds ofentering the restaurant I began to marvelat this gem of an eaterie.

Sapporo is more than a restaurant- it is aunique and exquisite dining experiencewhere you are entertained by talentedchefs. My guests and I were led to a U-shaped table that had room for 8 diners.Centred in the middle was a large grill.Strangers were sat around the same tablebut no-one felt uncomfortable as the chefjuggled with razor sharp machetes inchesfrom our nose. If you have ever seen theTom Cruise film, cocktail think spinningknives and dangerous kitchen utensils, instead of shaking cocktails.

The Sushi menu is delectable, aftersampling the mixed sushi for sharing, I amnow an enthusiastic convert to the healthyJapanese offerings.

The menu offers a variety of salads andsushi, miso soup and noodles. There arehot appetisers – I opted for the SmokedChicken Rolls with a barbecue dippingsauce. All the while we ate, the chef spunhis magic with scrambled eggs, sautéedpotatoes and a stir fried rice dish, right

before our eyes. The seasoning wasnothing short of exquisite, the stir friedvegetables that came with my juicy sirloinsteak was so delectable on my tongue Iate slowly to savour every mouthful. Myfriend chose a vegetarian main course, recommended by our lovely waitress. Hehad the Oko-Nomi Yaki, which Ithoroughly recommend. It is a pancakewith cabbage, shitake mushroomsandtopped with mayonnaise, yakisoba sauceand nori seaweed.

Unbelievable delicious, it was a tasteexplosion of sweet and sour at the sametime, with a lovely consistency.

The chef continued to entertain usthroughout the main course and suitablefull, there was no room for desert.

Typical main courses at Sapporo arearound £18 and they are served with hugeportions of potatoes, rice and stir friedvegetables. Dining at Sapporo is morethan just going out for a meal- you get atingling entertainment show, freshlycooked food right in front of your eyesand an amazing menu choice offeringfantastic pan- Asian cuisine.

Experience some 1920's New YorkCity glamour as I did with mydearest friend and dinner

companion, at The Noble HouseRestaurant and Bar.

The Noble House presents an all daymenu starting with breakfast servedbetween 7.30am - 10am and lunch frommidday. The menu also boasts 5 dailycheese changes, two types of bread anda daily soup change.

There's an impressive wine list compiledby dedicated wine merchants from allover the world. We took the managersrecommendation of Albarino Leiras RiasBaixas (£29.00). A Spanish white winethat brought fusions of apples andflowers in the initial taste and left hints ofolives on my palate.

We began with two starters, a trio ofMushrooms (£9.95) puree of portobellomushrooms, with a delicious cappuccinoof woodland mushrooms (a minimushroom soup) and sauteed girolles ongrilled sour dough. My dinner guestsavoured over a grilled whole sardine withspiced sweet pimentoes and a tantalisingchorizo and harrisa (£6.95). Not toofilling, rich in flavour and both disheswere beautifully presented. The menu iseclectic international mix of dishes withthe emphasis on quality steaks & fish.

For the main course I had a medium doneharmony farm premium fillet steak(£27.95) aged for 28 days - farm to forkmethod, this steak didn't disappoint.Tender, succulent and literally melted inmy mouth. I chose peppercorn sauce toaccompany my mighty main that wasserved with spiced garlic butter, sauteedmushrooms and delicious grilled cherrytomatoes.

My dinner guest selected from theimpressive 'specials' menu. ChoosingSeared Indian ocean tuna (16.95) withsesame dressed asian noodles (andenjoying a entire course without metalking, just savouring) my guestdescribed the fish as meaty, fresh andwell flavoured. The noodles were juicy, not to thick, and a perfect portion size.

Dessert was a stunning finale, passionfruit and mango brulee with home madeshort bread (£6.95) the dish looked asdivine as it tasted. Exuding a combinationof vanilla, lemon and mango flavours thebrulee was perfection with devilishlygood sugar coated homemadeshortbread.

After dinner be sure to explore someunderground glamour in the secret barbelow where you can enjoy the bestMartinis in the city!

“Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa, set amidstthe wonderful Wirral countryside. Enjoyour traditional Afternoon Tea whilstlooking out over our beautiful gardens.Located in the Village of Thornton Hough,Thornton Hall is the ideal destination fora relaxing afternoon away from it all”

fternoon tea

Take a step back in time to a world of afternoon tea and scones, cakes andpastries and, of course, piping hot tea. Steeped in history, the BritanniaAdelphi, which is the largest in Liverpool, takes you back to those glory days

when time stood still every afternoon as people stopped for tea. In its heyday theAdelphi was the majestic centre of Liverpool's city and walking through their frontentrance you can see why by the stunning architectural features.

In fact one of the rooms of the Titanic was based upon a room in the AdelphiWhile time has not been unkind to the building, fashions have changed and whilesome seek the comfort of modern boutique hotels, you cannot beat the oldfashioned cosiness of the Britannia Adelphi with its impressive architraves andenormous windows

Stopping for afternoon tea in the grand lounge, which has recently been recarpetedand painted, it was a refreshing change to sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet, which at times seemed erry.

We had two pots of tea and the children had hot chocolates served with lashings ofwhipped cream and chocolate shavings. It was served on a lovely silver tray coveredin crisp doyles, adding to the quaintness of the afternoon. Very Miss Marple. Thecake selection was a surprise.

There were individual servings of lemon meringue pie, ginger cake, a fruitcheesecake with passion fruit topping, chocolate slices. The children were alsogiven a plate of biscuits and some hot buttered tea cakes. Even the baby did notmiss out with a serving of the Adelphi Iced Surprise, which was iced water withorange and lime cordial.

Other offerings from the menu included freshly cut sandwiches, scones and cherrycake. In all, a very civilised way to spend a Sunday afternoon
