The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Ten Ways to Celebrate May, the Month of Mary by, Fr. Ed Broom, OMV

May is the month of Mary. Mary is the Daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son and the Mystical Spouse of the Holy Spirit, the Queen of the angels, saints, of heaven and earth. And St. Louis de Montfort acclaims her as the Queen of all hearts and God’s masterpiece of creation. The saints acclaim in powerful, inspired and often poetic terms the glories of the Blessed Virgin Mary. What might be some ways that we can manifest our love and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her month; the month of Mary? ∗ Consecration The first gesture we should do every morning is prayer — a prayer of consecration to Jesus

through the Immaculate heart of Mary. Start off the day right through Mary! ∗ Angelus/Regina Caeli Traditionally this prayer is prayed at noon, but it came be prayed at any time. Why

not pray it three times a day — at 9:00 am, 12 noon, and 6:00 pm. By doing this we will be sanctifying the morning hours, the afternoon hours, and the evening hours through the holy and sweet presence of Mary. These Marian prayers call to mind Mary’s key presence in the Mysteries of our salvation — The Incarna-tion, Passion, death and Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

∗ Consecrate the Home and Family to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Prepare for the consecration by a

nine-day novena of Rosaries and prayers and culminate with the priest blessing the image as well as the home and family members. From this blessing and consecration God the Father will shower a deluge of blessings upon you and every member in your family.

∗ Consecration of the Self Go through the formal process of consecration of your whole being to Jesus

through Mary. You can choose various forms: Kolbe, or St. Louis de Montfort, or the modern one done by Father Michael Gaitely — 33 Days to Morning Glory. This consecration could change dramatically your whole life.

∗ Imitate Mary If we truly love somebody, then we want to get to know them better, follow them more closely

and finally to imitate their good qualities that we call virtues. St. Louis de Montfort in his classic True Devo-tion to Mary gives us a list of the ten principal virtues of Mary: Her deep humility, lively faith, blind obedi-ence, unceasing prayer, constant self-denial, surpassing purity, ardent love, heroic patience, angelic kind-ness, and heavenly wisdom!

∗ Temptations? Call on Mary Our life is a constant combat zone, until death! We should not fight alone

against the devil, the flesh and the world. Rather, in the heat of temptation, when all seems to be lost call upon the Holy Name of Mary; pray the Hail Mary! If done, all the powers of hell will be vanquished.

∗ Mary and the Liturgical Year. Get to know the powerful presence of Mary in the Mystical Body of Christ

which is the Church. Especially get to know Mary’s presence in the Liturgical Year—the Masses. The end purpose of Holy Mass is to praise and worship God the Father, through the offering of God the Son and through the power of the Holy Spirit. However, Mary has a special place in the Liturgical Year. Mary is the Mother of God, the Mother of the Church and she is our Mother in the order of grace! Read and meditate attentively the Apostolic Letter of Pope Paul VI Marialis Cultus, which clearly explains the presence of Mary in the Liturgical calendar. This is a spiritual masterpiece. It is a must for your reading!

∗ Reading on Mary For a well-formed and integral Mariology we should cultivate both doctrine and devo-

tion. Doctrine without devotion can be arid and dry. Whereas, devotion without doctrine can easily degen-erate into mere sentimentalism! Read the Apostolic Letter of Saint John Paul II Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary. This spiritual gem combines both solid catholic doctrine (Mariology) with a tender love and devotion to Mary. The saintly Pope exhorts the entire world to contemplate the face of Jesus through the eyes and heart of Mary. Mary is the quickest, shortest, easiest and most efficacious path to Jesus.

∗ Marian Apostle Become an ardent and fervent and passionate Apostle of Mary. ∗ The Most Holy Rosary In Fatima, Our Lady appeared six times to the Shepherd children—Lucia, Jacinta

and Francisco. In each and every apparition Our Lady insisted upon the praying of the most Holy Rosary. St. John Paul II in his document on the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary insisted, pleaded, that the whole world pray the Holy Rosary for the salvation of the family and for world peace. The famous Rosary priest, Father Patrick Peyton put it concisely: “The family that prays together stays together”… and “A world at prayer is a world at peace.”

Father Ed Broom is an Oblate of the Virgin Mary and the author of “From Humdrum to Holy,” which offers more words of wisdom for how to become a saint today. He blogs regularly

at Fr. Broom's Blog.

Easter was Blooming at St. Francis The Easter season is the busiest time for the art and environment committee at St. Francis. Beginning with Palm Sunday then Holy Thursday, Good Friday and finally Easter Sunday, our volunteers work single and double shifts per day to make the transitions, from one happening to another, as seamless as possible. From the comments received, the parish has voted that the church looked beautiful. Many teens and college students joined in the effort and we were so very happy to welcome Larry and Patti to the team. Many, many hands were needed and we are so fortunate that the parish responded with great energy. We are always happy to welcome a new volunteer. If you have a few hours or an afternoon, please consider joining our merry band of decorators. Absolutely no experience is necessary just a great desire to create the most beautiful environment in church. Feel free to contact: debi Ross @ 708-403-9351 or [email protected] Well done art and environment volunteers! debi Ross Chair, Art and Environment Committee

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

In thinking about a new Religious Education facili-ty, I had a number of key ideas; one negative the others positive. The first, when the chil-dren, or in fact when any-one entered, I wanted them to experience a space that did not look or feel like a school. As we planned the building, I wanted to avoid an “institutional look”. The second, religious images would be visible and inte-gral throughout the build-ing. Whether or not chil-dren would be able to ar-ticulate these differences I was not sure. At least they would experience this building as different from their school; thus conse-quently realize something different happens here. While we envisioned the Center having multiple uses, for many age groups, a central design focus was elementary age children. While I had these core ideas, I was not sure how to transfer these ideas into our building. I was aware of some public displays that were designed with a focus on children. I made these trips more to get ideas, rather than simply copy what I saw.

My first visit was to Grand Rapids – the Meyer Sculpture Gar-dens. These gardens, if I remember correctly, were an outdoor display of sculpture. For me, it was a place to reflect on outside decoration and what might be done as children arrived. As I walked through the park and observed the sculptures, I noticed the sidewalk. (Thank God I didn’t trip!). Images were impressed into the sidewalk. When the concrete was poured, impressions of various animals were placed in the wet con-crete to leave a lasting impression; and capture the attention of children. A second outdoor ele-ment that caught my attention were tall poles placed all around the area where the sculpted pieces were displayed. These poles held both wind chimes that creat-ed wonderful sound that responded to the breeze; and for lack of a better word , colorful ”flags” (material) that simply blew with the wind. I was impressed with this outdoor space so specifically decorat-ed.

Another road trip was to Indianapolis, to visit their Children’s museum. This museum seemed to me to be a work in progress, not fully completed, and I was disappointed. I guess I was expecting more Mu-seum of Science and In-dustry or Disney – interac-tive exhibits. Their displays were tradi-tional and one dimension-al. They used shadow boxes for a number of displays; these caught my attention and were excel-lent in communicating var-ious exhibits. Some were placed lower on the wall to be accessible to young-er children. Another look: some friends and I attend the Chicago symphony. At the entrance to the gift shop, a projector, I believe called Gobi, was placed in such a way to project a message on the sidewalk. The projected imaged pro-vided a message to enter the gift shop. These visits were a num-ber of years ago. Some descriptions may be inac-curate. But, they did get me thinking!

Throughout 2018, this page will include reflections from staff and parishioners high-lighting their ministry involve-ment.

My name is Greg Gervais. I have been asked to write a brief synopsis about myself and my in-volvement here at SFA. My wife, Pam, and I have been members of St. Francis for almost 25 years. We are empty nesters with grown chil-dren and we relish the titles of grandpa & grand-ma. I worked as a mail-man, here in Orland Park, for 36 years. I am retired, sort of. I am employed part time at the parish. My job title is P.M.J. (short for premi-ere mop jockey). I have worked here for 2 1/2 years. I have the pleasure of being supervised by Jim Hahn and Monika Florek, 2 of the best boss-es a guy could want. No brag, just fact. On the volunteer side of things, I have been an usher at 9am for many years. Again, I have the good fortune to usher

alongside some very unique individuals. We enjoy each other's com-pany and get the job done. My main volunteer activ-ity at SFA has been as a chaperon on the annual youth mission trip. I have been doing this since 2002. Words can-not adequately express how much I enjoy the mission trip. As a parish, we have some truly wonderful high school kids. They are intelli-gent, giving and re-spectful. They work well without complaining. Personally, they are very accepting of people like myself, of the metal-lic age (that would be silver in the hair, gold in the teeth and lead in the posterior). I always find

that I learn more from these kids than they do from me. As an added bonus, many of them have kept in touch with me over the years. I like hearing of their accom-plishments beyond our time together. I also like to think that maybe I had a little something to with those accomplishments. Then again, maybe not. In conclusion, if you are of high school age, check out the youth group. You might be pleasantly sur-prised. Should you be over 21, or of the metallic age, please explore the opportunity of volunteer-ing with those of a young-er vintage. Maybe like myself, you will get back so much more than you give. Thanks, in advance, for your time and talent.

MINISTRY MOMENTS THIS WEEK: Greg Gervais

LOVE ONE ANOTHER In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to "love one another as I love you" (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we pur-posely avoid, and even those we are tempted to des-pise. In this Sunday's selection from the Acts of the Apos-tles Peter shows us how far God's love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter real-izes that God no longer "shows partiality" to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God's love extends to all people, and so should ours.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life.

May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter.

Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called "Lady Month," which began on August 15.

By the eighteenth century, the custom of assign-ing devotions to months of the year was develop-ing. June, for example, was the month of the Sa-cred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary.

Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years.

That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen.

Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice.

Devoting May to Mary is undoubtedly a better thing to do.
