Let’s take a look at some samples

Plans with a new friend
• Interpretive Task• First, listen to the exchange student give information
about himself or herself. Circle the information you hear on the chart, then answer questions based on the information you hear.
• Interpersonal Task• Share this information with another classmate and
talk about your interests. Discuss what you have in common and decide on some plans.
• Presentational Task• Plan a weekend itinerary for you and your new friend
based on what you know he/she likes to do.• Adapted from Greenville County Schools, SC.

Time to have fun• Your school is organizing an exchange program to a
target language country. You will be spending a lot of time with the students at their school and want to know how you might spend your free time.
Interpretive Task• First, underline and categorize the leisure activities for
students in the target language country from that section in the newspaper, leisure guide, or school website.
• Adapted from Greenville County Schools, SC.

Interpersonal Task• With a partner, discuss what you do after school
where you live and if you will be able to do the same activities at the other school.
Presentational Task• Write an blog or voicethread comparing how
kids spend time after school in the United States and in the target language country.
• Adapted from Greenville County Schools, SC.

The Make-over of the Misnamed Mode
Jennifer Eddy (2010)
Waiter, there’s a __ in my soup
“My students write dialogues between themselves and the “Waiter” in the restaurant, and design their own menus. They made the menus based on samples from an internet site. Then they perform the dialogues they memorized. Isn’t this an Interpersonal task?”
No, authentic menus are great, but the “dialogue” is memorized, not spontaneous and unrefined.

It’s a riot to diet
“The students listened to a news show about a healthy diet and put the foods in categories of meats, dairy, fruit, veg, and grains. I was thinking this was presentational mode….is it?”
No, it is a good interpretive task that demonstratesinference, meaning making, and comprehension.
Jennifer Eddy (2010)
Let’s Go!
• “Ok, for the interpretive mode task, they listened to the train schedule and wrote down the departure time and track number they needed and what time they would arrive at the destination on their paper. They all had different places to go.
• For the interpersonal task, they asked their partner where they were going, when they were going to leave, and something else about the place.
• For the presentational mode task, they wrote a weekend sightseeing itinerary for their friend that was going to arrive in one week. What a way to review the verb to Go! Is this a good performance assessment?” YES!!
