The Atlantic Ocean Current
By…………………………………………….Md. Abu Said
Lecturer in GeographyChandpur Govt. College
Aims and targets1. To identify the location of Atlantic ocean
currents
2. To know the overall situation of temperature
3. To show the direction of the currents
4. To know the importance of Atlantic currents
………What to discuss..........
1. Definition of ocean current2. Types of ocean current3. Elaborate discussion on Atlantic
Ocean Currents4. Importance of the Atlantic currents
Ocean Current: Ocean current can be defined as the movement of ocean water from one place to another, horizontally or vertically.
Cold Warm
Types of Ocean current(Temperature based)

1. The Gulf Stream
South Atlantic currents: Located at the south of the equator.
1. Antarctic: Due to the influence of westerlies, a current has been created on the south most part of Atlantic. This has been originated from Antarctic and moves toward north-east as a cold current. Antarctic
2. Benguela: Antarctic current is divided into two parts nearby the Cape of Good hope. Benguela is the continuation of the Antarctic current through the eastern coast of Africa toward north

3. S. Equatorial: This is the continuation of the Benguela current straight to west parallel to the equator, at the south. This is a warm current. This is later on divided into two parts. One of these enters into the Gulf of Mexico through the northern coast of S. America.

4. Brasil: The second part of the south equatorial current flows toward south besides the coast of Brasil. This is known as the Brasil current. While moving southward, this warm current becomes colder at the southern most part of its path.

5. Folkland: This is the branch of the Antarctic current that flows besides the Folkland island, towards north. This finds Brasil current at its path and loses itself into Brasil current.

North Atlantic: Located at the north of the equator.
1. The Gulf Stream: Water of Mississippi falls in the Gulf of Mexico. The current, with the huge pressure of water, flows toward north-east between the narrow space of Florida and Cuba. This is known as the Gulf Stream.

A. North Atlantic drift: The branch of the gulf stream that flows toward British island by the influence of westerlies is known as the North Atlantic drift. It reaches to the Arctic ocean. After flowing a short, it turns into the cold current.

B. Canary Current: one of the branches of the gulf stream after reaching the coast of Portugal, tends to move south-ward nearby the western coast of Africa (Canary island). This is a cold current as this comes from the high latitude areas

C. West Greenland: one of the branches of the gulf stream going northward, turns to west nearby the Iceland. It enters to the Arctic ocean through Davis channel.

2. N. Equatorial: The continuation of the Carnary current toward the west parallel to the equator is called the North equatorial current. This is divided into two after getting blockage at the Caribbean island. Southern part mixes with the south equatorial current whereas the northern part mixes with the gulf stream.

3. Arctic: Two currents flow from the Arctic ocean to south through the both sides of Greenland are combinedly known as the Arctic current. This is originated because of variation in salinity of Arctic and Atlantic.

4. Labrador: The combined flow of the Arctic currents meet together at the gulf of Labrador and flows southward as a cold current. This finally mixes with the gulf stream.

Equatorial Counter Current: This is the current flowing from west to east between the North and South Equatorial current. This is originated because of the barrier of Brasil coast to the South Equatorial current as well as the presence of Doldrum (nearby equator, the wind movement is almost zero).

5. Guinea: The Canary and Equatorial counter current mixes together and turns towards south west to enter Guinea gulf. This combined current is known as the Guinea current. This is a warm current and mixes with the Benguela current. Antarctic

Importance of Atlantic Ocean Current:
1. Ocean route between North America and Europe
2. Ocean route between Western Africa and South America
3. The routes having warm ocean current remain navigable year-round

Importance of Atlantic Ocean Current:
4. These have a great impact on the environment of the nearby areas. Nearby the warm current, the temperature remains higher and nearby the colder currents, the reverse condition is observed.
Summary
We shared the followings………….
1. Basic Idea about ocean currents
2. Detail about Atlantic ocean currents
3. Importance of this specially in large scale trade with cheap rate of transportation
4. Reasons for being difference in currents
??????????Should we pollute the environment? If we pollute it, it will betray with us. Because it has the ability to damage all including the normal functions of the ocean water movement.
