When do the children start Jolly Phonics

The children are given a gentle introduction to the sounds and actions when they join the Foundation Stage.

Some of the practical activities may also be undertaken if the child is ready.

The children become familiar with the characters and the stories.

5 Basic Skills that Jolly Phonics teaches are:

1. Learning the letter sounds

2. Letter formation

3. Blending

4. Identifying sounds in words

5. Tricky words

These are the letter sounds and the order that they are taught in.

At all times we stress the need for a correct pencil hold

• Tripod grip

• ‘Froggy legs’

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK

Recap all letters and sounds.

Introduce new sounds through story.

Practise actions and letter formations on board, in the air and on each others back.

Blending- hearing the sounds in the word.

Towards the end of the weekNo new sound is introduced.

All sounds are reinforced.

The new stories are recapped.

Rhythm games are played with the children.

Names of letters and capital

letters are taught.

During story sessions

• Throughout the week, at the end of the day children recap the weeks phonic work and show each other and the staff all that they can remember!

Word building

• When the children are confident with all their sounds they will be encouraged to use their knowledge to build words.

Reading Tricky Words

These are words that the children need to learn as they do not fit into the normal phonic pattern but occur frequently in reading and writing.

READING• When the children are

secure enough in their knowledge of the sounds and are able to blend them independently they will be ready to move on to our reading scheme.

• Songbirds is a phonic based scheme and is published by Oxford Reading Tree.
