AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central – not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s

YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.

Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now? A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream come true to watch myself on TV.Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.

A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braai-ing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the

How To Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest.

Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success?A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful, and that sometimes things go wrong. My secret is to keep going no matter what happens!

Q: What are your top five DIY tips for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty workA: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing.• Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen.• Use safety goggles when you chop onions to

stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make-up.

•Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails.

•Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project.

• I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping

Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on

•Bakeinapre-heated200degCovenfor35to40minutesoruntilgoldenandcrisp.

I always have a roll or two of frozen pastry in my freezer, you should too, it comes in handy if I want to make a tart or pie at the drop of a hat. I love little jam tarts and when the craving hits me, I make my way to the freezer and pull out a roll of shop bought frozen pastry, wait for it to thaw, roll it out, cut out little rounds and pop them into the hollows

of a muffin tin, place a little butter in the base, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and a spoonful of any jam that takes my fancy , pop it into a hot oven, put the kettle on and before you know it I’m munching on jam tarts and sipping tea. The

other thing I like to do with a sheet of pastry is fill it and make a roulade. A roulade is a dish of filled rolled meat or pastry, the term roulade originates from the French word "rouler", meaning "to roll". Now what I like about having a sheet of pastry handy is that you can fill it with a million different things and call them, tarts pies and roulades, you

can make any of these from scratch or use up left-overs from the night before to make a pie.

Mammas word bederf vir MoedersdagDie Graad 1, 2 en 3-leerders het hul mammas bederf met ‘n oggendtee en heerlike lekkernye. ‘n Spesiale program vir Moedersdag is aangebied en is met ‘n modeparade deur die leerders afgesluit. Al die klere wat gedra is, het uit Pappa en Mamma se klerekas gekom. Dit het vir groot pret gesorg.

Introducing a Grade 00The importance of early childhood education was acknowledged with George Randell Primary School introducing a Grade 00 to the School.

Grade 4 OutingOur Grade 4 learners went on an outing to Elton Farm on Kei Road. Their adventure began with the classes being divided into 2 groups. One group went on a game drive where they saw different buck, cattle and giraffes.

The other group of learners had the opportunity to hold baby piglets, milk the cows and herd the sheep. After swopping activities, both groups met back at the farm where they enjoyed a picnic together.

After their break, learners jumped on the back of trucks and went to feed the cattle. They also went to see a windmill and got a chance to dip their feet into the dam.

It was an amazing outing and was enjoyed by all.

Interact ClubCambridge High School’s Interact Club have been very busy this term, including visiting the elderly at Fairlands.

Leadership and Team BuildingCambridge High School’s Grade Eleven class recently participated in a Leadership and Team Building afternoon run by Jonginenge. Great fun was had by all!

HockeyCambridge High School’s U16 A Boys’ Hockey team played against Somerset College at the recent Woodridge College Hockey Festival. Cambridge won 1-0.

Grade 5 OutingThe Grade 5s had to make African huts from play dough (which they had to make themselves) and other materials found at home.

Here are some of the best ones from 5V. The children have been really creative and made some beautiful huts and accompanying scenery.

Eisteddfod The Cambridge Primary Choir recently received a gold for their performance at the Port Rex Lions Choir Eisteddfod. We are very proud of them!

Games DayOn 26 April our learners had a fun-filled day during our annual Games Day. From jumping castles to slippery slides and play time in the pool, everyone had a great time.

The classrooms are specially designed and kitted out with child-friendly, stimulating equipment.

Preppie Sports DayOur Pre-Primary learners had a wonderful time at the special Preppie Sports Day, hosted by Kuswag Primary School.

Three Days at HobbitonGPS Grade 5s recently spent three days at Hobbiton enjoying the many challenges that were on offer.

Jordyn Leicester, Lathi-Tha Leyitile, Shannon Corlet and Tahra Sumption tackle a group dynamics assignment.

The real challenge remains a mystery for Ntsika Dywili, Melissa Venter, Seth Humpel, Jozi Dennis and Robyn Becker!

Resting at the top of Kettle Spout waterfall are Andrew Rae, Shannon Corlet, Tumelo Lechamochamo, Jemma Suckling and Soso Fana, while most of the pupils attempted the heart-stopping trapeze jump!

The Grade 11s pulled a brilliant April Fool’s joke on the Matrics, by convincing the Matrics that they had not raised sufficient funds for an invitation ceremony where they would receive their official invitations to their Matric dance (a Beaconhurst tradition).

The Grade 11s staged a lacklustre effort, much to the Grade 12’s chagrin. Great was the Matrics’ surprise when the real ceremony arrived two days later!

The ‘Frozen’ themed invitation ceremony was a huge success! The Matrics received glass sand-blasted invitations and our head prefects, Marco Van Greunen and Khanya Mweli, had to literally “break the ice” to receive their invitations.

Go-kartingShannon Jackson (Grade 11) is achieving great results at Go-karting or “karting”. This year she participated in two national competitions, in which she placed 8th and 6th.

Grade 12 campThe Matrics had a memorable experience at their last annual LO Camp in March, at Cefane Beach Resort.

SAICE competitionsOur school entered two teams in both the Bridge Building competition (Shannon Jackson, Jameson de Witt, Kyle Harvett and Garreth Hewitt) and the Water Distribution competition (Rochelle Bessinger, Okuhle Klass, Homba Mazaleni, Jameson de Witt, Kyle Harvett and Garreth Hewitt).

HockeyThe Hudson Park 1st team girls won the Fairmont Hockey Tournament in Cape Town. They were unbeaten at the tournament in eight matches.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor DreamcoatThe production saw a packed Guild Theatre for the entire week that it ran. The pupils who participated thoroughly enjoyed every moment, including the standing ovations that they received at each show. Congratulations to the production team, crew and pupils who took part and a big thank you to all those in the community that supported our school. We hope to see you again next time!

Maya GoddenMaya Godden was one of the 14 members of the South African team that competed at the ‘World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships’ in Pittsburgh, USA. Maya made finals in the prepared speech category and grand finals for the debating category. She ended 4th in the Debating category and took 8th place overall (highest ranking member of the South African Team).

High School ExtravaganzaThe recently held Extravaganza was a major success and with all the hard work and training by the contestants, as well as the

entertainers, the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the pupils and parents.

The winners, Alanna Scott and Lukhanyo Mnyute, were all big smiles about their achievement on the night. Well done to the Matric Dance Committee for assisting throughout.

Rebecca Ansell Rebecca recently competed for Border at the National Currie Cup tournament, in Durban. Rebecca, at only 16, was selected for the Border U18 girls team. They competed in the final. After a full-time score of 9–9, the game finished after 8 rounds of penalty shootouts, in which Rebecca was in the firing line. She managed to keep 3 penalty shootouts, the last one being the most vital, as it earned her team the Gold Medal.

RowingOur teachers Carmen Schenk, Lorrinda Thomas and Janique Klingelhoeffer, won six first place medals at the annual Senior South African Rowing Championships held on Roodeplaat Dam, Pretoria.

SwimmingAt the Youth Elite Level 4 swimming championships Kyle Holmes was 1st 200m individual medley; 2nd 200m freestyle; 3rd 100m backstroke; 4th 100m freestyle and 5th in 50m and 100m breaststroke.

AnglingHudson Park won the Border Schools’ rock and surf league trophy. Caden Vaupotic was the Border U/16 champion and both he and Andrew Everts were selected to the Border U/16 team.

Founder’s Day Clarendon Preparatory School celebrated their 54th birthday this month. The guest speaker, Mrs Pam King delivered a colourful story which left our girls and guests feeling inspired.

Winning all the wayTsegho Bixa, a Grade 2 student, made us very proud by taking second place in the 4th round of the Buffalo City Chess tournament.

Inter-house Cross CountryOur second term got off to a running start with our annual inter-house cross country. All three of our houses did so well with Hunter & Gittins coming a joint second, and Ketchen taking home the trophy!

KHS Derby DayIt was smiles all round as our girls enjoyed the first of our winter Derby Days with exciting hockey and netball matches against KHS.

Book dress-up dayBooks came alive at Clarendon Preparatory School as girls and staff enjoyed a day of dressing up as their favourite fictional characters.

TennisJessica has been chosen to represent the South African U13 Tennis team in America later this year. Well done, Jess.

Squash results With only a pool of 7 schools, a round robin format was played. On the first day, Clarendon won our matches convincingly, winning 4 – 0 against Pretoria GHS, La Rochelle from Paarl and Rhenish from Stellenbosch. On the second day, we

had a tough match against Queenstown GHS, losing 0 – 4, with some exciting games being played. We then beat Westville GHS from Durban 4 – 0, and had another nail-biter against Eunice GHS from Bloemfontein, which we lost 0 – 4, again with very close games. Overall, this placed us in 3rd position, taking the Bronze medal. Congratulations to our Top 4 players.

Tennis resultsClarendon’s First Tennis Team competed against 14 other schools. We finished second in our pool and played Oranje Meisieskool in the semi-final, where we lost with only Ashleigh Judd winning a set. We had to play Affies on the final day for 3rd & 4th place. We ended the tournament in 4th place as we lost narrowly 10–8.

National All Girls’ Schools Festival

Youth for Understanding ScholarshipWe take great pleasure in announcing that one of our Port Rexians Bronwill Adonis has been awarded a Scholarship by Youth for Understanding for the 2016 year program to Germany.

He departs South Africa on 12 August 2016 and returns July 2017.

During his stay in Germany he will attend a school in area where he will be placed with a host family for the period of his exchange.

We wish Bronwill well and trust that he will come back to share a world of knowledge with us.

Receives SA ColoursGandhi Jafta (Grade 11) received her SA Colours for cricket and was presented with a trophy and her SA cap at the annual Border Cricket Awards on 15 April. The Border Woman’s Cricket Team, of which she has been a member for two seasons, was presented with medals for winning the CSA Woman’s Coastal T20 Competition. They won all 4 of their T20 matches and 3 out of 4 of their 50 over matches.

Interact Raise funds for Canaan Care Centre The Lilyfontein School Interact Group raises funds for the Canaan Care Centre which cares for persons with severe and profound physical and mental disabilities. They held two events in April, the disaster Dinner and the Father & Son Fun Day

Guests at the Disaster Dinner eat their food with whatever utensil they are given. This year this included braai tongs, olive spoons and even beach spades.

Teams of dads and their lads competed in many mental and physical challenges at this year’s Father & Son Fun Day.

Matric DanceAs usual, the Grade 11s did an amazing job of transforming the school hall and planning the event. In true Lilyfontein School style, the matrics and their guests arrived in a wide variety of vehicles including the standard luxury cars, a pony trap, a Volksie Bus and a vintage tractor.

Jazz Band Tour – Eastern CapeThe Stirling Jazz Band embarked on a quick tour around the Eastern Cape from 23 to 27 April. Performances included the Arminel Hotel (Hogsback), DSG/SAC (Grahamstown) and Woodridge College (Port Elizabeth).

Port Rex Technical High School hosted the Annual Bridge Building and Water Competition during April. Among the participants were Merrifield College, Stirling High School, Selborne College, Kusile Comprehensive School, Port Rex Technical High School and Queens College, to name a few.

The bridge building team received fourth place, while Queens College won the competition. Our Water Team narrowly missed first place by 5mm of water and was awarded second place. Merrifield took first place. The event was a great success and we thank everyone who was involved.

HockeyKimberley Welsh played her 100th game for the Stirling First Girls Hockey team. What an amazing achievement: 100 games and 47 goals!

Most notably is that Eastern Province centre Jeremy Ward will lead the team in the showpiece, while his provincial team-mate Junior Pokomela has been named as vice-captain, alongside 2015 SA Schools captain, DHL Western Province lock Ernst van Rhyn.

Joining Ward and Pokomela are hooker Tango Balekile, prop Nicolaas Oosthuizen, scrumhalf James Hall and fullback Keanu Vers.

SARU Kings Academy manager and Currie Cup head coach, Robbi Kempson, said he was very proud of the players that had been selected.

“They are all products of the SARU Kings Academy, they are professional athletes and have played phenomenally well as a unit last year, in the U19 Currie Cup 1st division competition,” he said.

The Eastern Province U19 team won 11 of their 12 regular matches and went on to be crowned overall champions last year.

“I have always said that Jeremy was a strong ambassador for rugby in the region and I am confident that he will make the people of South Africa proud as he leads this SA U20 team, and the same can be said for Junior Pokomela, who is a phenomenal rugby player,” said Kempson.

Kempson also complimented the SA Kings academy staff, Mzwandile Stick, Nadus Nieuwoudt and Sean ‘O Dea, for their contributions they had made in developing top class professional rugby players.

Charl Crous, Chief Operations Officer of the Southern Kings franchise, which has contracted both Hall and Pokomela for the 2016 season, said it was a testament to the quality of rugby talent that was being developed in the Eastern Cape.

“One of the driving forces behind the call for a Super Rugby franchise to be based in the Eastern Cape was to create a career path for the young, talented rugby playing individuals from the region, who in the past have been forced to move elsewhere to pursue a career in rugby,” he said.

The Junior Springboks will kick off the 2016 international spectacle against Japan on Tuesday, 7 June at the Academy Stadium, before taking on Argentina on 11 June at the AJ Bell Stadium, and France on 15 June back at the Academy Stadium in the pool stages.

“It is always challenging to name a squad of only 28 players, especially if one considers the immense talent at junior level in South Africa, but we have selected the best possible team for the World Cup.”

The team played their first official warm-up match last Friday at Wits University in Johannesburg against the Xerox Golden Lions Under-19 and Under-21 teams, with an eye on sharpening up their game before the tournament.

This will be followed by clashes against Maties in Stellenbosch on Tuesday, 17 May and the SWD Eagles in Oudtshoorn on Saturday, 21 May, with the team set to depart for the international showpiece on 2 June.
