Welcome to Summer 2017

Rudolf Steiner College

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We have an exciting roster of professional development workshops and courses in store for summer 2017 on a variety of Waldorf-related topics such as early childhood, grades, high school, remedial educational support, handwork, biodynamics, and the Waldorf approach for public schools.

Rudolf Steiner College provides a creative educational environment for people of diverse ages and backgrounds who seek a deeper understanding of the challenges of modern life and wish to develop new capacities as a basis for their life’s work, for social service, and for cultural renewal. All our classes and workshops offer unique opportunities to engage with fellow students and practicing teachers from across North America and abroad.

We are excited to offer new early childhood workshops: Little Ones and Therapeutic Movement, where participants will begin their day with eurythmy and then learn the history, theory, and uses for the Little One pedagogical dolls, and Exploring the Outdoor Kindergarten and Woodworking with the Young Child, where we will explore the benefits of spending time outdoors with children and how everyday activities done inside the classroom can be brought outside.

We invite you to attend Rudolf Steiner College’s commencement ceremony on July 22 for those receiving Waldorf Teacher Certifications, and to join us this summer for an immersive experience devoted to professional development, best practices, personal transformation, and the arts.

Please register soon – classes fill up quickly!

Warmly,

Edmund Knighton, President Rudolf Steiner College

The Art of Teaching Waldorf Education Grades 1-4 and 5-8Grades 1-4: Opening Keynote Sunday, July 2; Classes Monday, July 3 – Friday, July 7

Grades 5-8: Opening Keynote Sunday, July 9; Classes Monday, July 10 – Friday, July 14

Art of Teaching workshops are professional development refreshers for currently practicing, experienced Waldorf teachers. An experienced teacher generally has had training and experience teaching in a Waldorf classroom. Familiarity with terms and principles is assumed.

The Art of Teaching provides an overview of the developmental principles that stand at the heart of Waldorf education and inform the curriculum. Participants will feel prepared for the joys and opportunities of a new grade with renewed insight into its unique developmental phase, new ideas for classroom activities, and tips for practical planning.

The focus is on curriculum, child development, and practical pedagogy for a specific grade. Teachers who are relatively new to the Waldorf approach will receive guidance in more fundamental subjects such as lesson and block planning, and development of healthy rhythms to support teaching and learning.

Eight workshops are offered, one for each grade level. Participants will receive grade-specific refreshers on the curriculum and stage of child development, participate in a range of arts related to a specific grade, and obtain tools and resources to enliven teaching and learning for the upcoming school year.

For those who are new to Waldorf education and who will be teaching in a Waldorf classroom for the first time without prior training, we recommend Public School Institute (see page 4).

Our deep gratitude goes to Harald Hoven, who retired in February. We welcome Cyndi Pointer, RSC’s new biodynamic farmer. As our biodynamic farmer and director of Raphael Garden, Harald created our beautiful farm and established a thriving Community Supported Agriculture program for 30+ years. We will miss him – but we’re not saying goodbye yet. He is continuing our monthly biodynamic workshops, the Biodynamic Summer Intensive, and is mentoring our new farmer, Cyndi Pointer, for the rest of the year.

Cyndi’s pathway began with a class on Medical Anthropology and she spent time in South America, where she first discovered biodynamic farming. Before coming to California, she was Farm Co-Manager at Happy Heart Farm in Colorado for seven years. Some of her passions include herbal medicine, health, nutrition, seasonal cooking, and personal growth. Cyndi is “excited and honored to serve Raphael Garden and to continue to serve Mother Earth through integrated biodynamic farming practices.”

Biodynamic Farming and Gardening

Biodynamic Essential Oils: Alchemical Growing and Processing Herbs for HealthSaturday, July 1 and Saturday, July 22 with Dennis Klocek

Grow superior plants for health and nutrition – even in small garden spaces! With simple equipment, you can grow and process nutritious and health-promoting herbs. Processes and formulas for making stress-reducing salves, sleep-promoting hydrosol combinations, digestive essences, and cosmetic creams are part of the hands-on work. Laboratory demonstrations for producing plant and gem combination sprays for plant enhancement support lectures on the alchemy of medicinal plants.

The unifying workshop theme is the harmonic relationships between soil, plants, and the changing forces available to plants throughout the growing year. Each month* these patterns are compared to corresponding laboratory activities that enhance plant materials into potent healing substances.

*Workshops may be taken individually. Each workshop builds on the previous one, but you do not have to take them in succession in order to understand the content.

July 1: Methods of seed saving with a description of seed-forming gestures in medicinal herb families. Topics: Seed selection, saving, and storage.

July 22: Essentials of fermenting. Topics: Vegetable ferments, wine to vinegar ferments with focus on gem and plant “ferments” as health modality.

Waldorf Teacher Education Program

Summer Session for Currently Enrolled StudentsClasses will be held for 6 days each week, Monday, July 3-Saturday, July 22, 8a-5:45p, with opening session keynote on Sunday, July 2. These programs are not open for new enrollment.

The summer Waldorf Teacher Education program is a three-year summer training that consists of Foundation Studies and Teacher Education, with additional work in the fall and spring terms of the first and second years, including observation and practice-teaching in Waldorf classrooms. Students join together for one week of Foundation Studies, followed by two weeks of classes in Waldorf Teacher Education curriculum and instruction, for a total of 18 days.

For early childhood, elementary, and high school teachers already in the classroom, as well as individuals new to teaching in independent Waldorf schools or public Waldorf-inspired schools, successful completion culminates in a Waldorf teaching diploma with a specialization in early childhood, elementary grades, or high school. (Note: Most states require that public school teachers hold a valid state credential; RSC courses do not lead to a state credential.)

The practical approach to the pedagogy introduced by Rudolf Steiner is emphasized and we will provide the tools necessary to your craft. You will work with active teachers under the guidance of our experienced faculty in order to enrich and deepen your understanding of Waldorf education, which will prepare you to become an independent practitioner of the principles of Waldorf education.
