From your Pastor’s Desk… Second Collection: This is the first weekend of the month. We will have a second collection. The second collection for May and June is for Deficit Reduction. Currently we are looking at a $30,000 budget deficit. Help us close this gap with this week’s collection and the collection in June.

New Staff Member: I’m pleased to announce that we have hired parishioner David Dalton as the new parish secretary. He will start on Monday. He has been doing a similar job at St. Wenceslaus. With the hire of David, we say good-bye and thank you to Peg Monzu. Peg has worked the last 17 years as parish secretary. I know I along with many other staff, volunteers, and parishioners will miss her in the office. We all wish her the very best in retirement.

Pastoral Council Question: This weekend during the Ministry Fair members of the Pastoral Council will be available in the narthex. They would like your feedback on the following question: Where do you go for information about the parish? What is the best way to communicate with you about events going on in the parish? (Parish Website, Facebook, Twitter, Bulletin, Announcements before Mass, Letter, e-mail, or other ways) The end of today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells us, “The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers.” The peace will not last and we hear earlier in the reading that there was not peace prior to this. The reading begins by telling us that the Church in Jerusalem did not trust Paul. They were skeptical of his conversion. Once the disciples in Jerusalem do accept him, Paul was still rejected by the Hellenist, the Jews who spoke Greek. It was so bad that they had to sneak Paul out of Jerusalem and send him back to his own home town of Tarsus. It was only then that the Church was at peace. The early Church has the same problems that the modern Church has. There are times of mistrust of each other. Also, there are some that are not welcome. Yet, as St. John reminds us in his First Epistle, if we are to live in Christ, we must follow Christ commandments. It is most important that we love one another, “just as he has commanded us.” If we truly love one another we will be united to Christ and to one another. In the Gospel today, Jesus uses the image of the vine and branches. For us to ‘bear fruit’ and truly live, we must be united to Christ. We cannot live separate from him any more than a branch can live separate from the vine. A branch that is separate just withers and dies. That is our life if we are separated from Christ. If we are united to Christ, then we are also united to everyone else through Christ. This unity comes through love. As the Epistle tells us in the beginning of today’s reading, “Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” If we are to see true growth in our parish and the Church, it must be through authentic love. Ireland: I’m going to Ireland from September 21st – October 3rd on The Best of Ireland Tour through Magi Travel and you are invited to join me. If you would like more information about the trip please contact me at the rector. You can also find information about the tour at http://www.magitravelinc.com/the-best-of-ireland.html

Discussions with the Pastor: You are invited to come and visit with an idea, concern, question, or if you would just like to talk. Feel free to come alone or with others. This week I will be available Wednesday, May 6th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm and Friday, May 8th

Religious Education

News

How we love our moms! Catechist Cheri Bowe used that concept to teach her Level 4 group that Mary is our mom, too, our mom in heaven. One disciple in Cheri’s group fully grasped the connection and commented, “If Mary is our mom, then her heart must really hurt if someone hurts us or if we hurt another person.” With Mother’s Day approaching, the Level 4 disciples will honor both their mom on earth and their mom in heaven for the love of both. The main thrust of the Level 4 curriculum is the Ten Commandments. Cheri used both song and symbol to help her group memorize the commandments in order as well as know what each means. Once all of Ten Commandments were learned, the children practiced reciting them and writing them on the whiteboard. They even started to make up their own symbols to help them remember and understand the meanings of the commandments. For example, one disciple came up with simple but effective symbols for remembering the 4th Commandment, honor your father and your mother. She used three hearts followed by a plus sign and a capital “O.” The hearts symbolized the parents and child and the “O” stood for obedience, which, when put together, created the perfect equation for happiness. Religious Education classes ended last week on April 29th. It was a wonderful year for our 80 disciples, 11 catechists, 6 aides, assistants and office personnel, and this director. We were blessed by God!

Good News” From St. Pius X/St. Leo School

"St. Pius X / St. Leo School is a diverse community forming

students in the Catholic faith

to excel in academics and service to others."

We are pleased to announce the names of the 8th grade students who have made Honor Roll for the third quarter of this school year. In order to be placed on the honor roll, the family handbook states the criteria as: "If the average of all subjects is 94.5% or above and there are no N's or U's in general conduct, the student will be placed on the First Honor Roll for the quarter. If the average of all these subjects is 89.5% to 94.4% and there are no N's or U's in general conduct, the student will be placed on the Second Honor Roll for the quarter. Students on either Honor Roll receive a special certificate of Academic Achievement in their report card each quarter they are on the Honor Roll."

We are thrilled to say that 77% of our 8th grade students made the Honor Roll for the third quarter. There were 35% of the 8th grade students on the First Honor Roll and 42% on the Second Honor Roll. This is outstanding for the 8th grade students! The students are:

First Honors for 8th Grade: Katie Amburn, Matthew Baysa, Marti Brohman, Evan Cannon, Brayden Cote´, Jaime Crinklaw, Sarah Gerards, Allison Glantz, Ben Goeman, Lily Jensen, Kylie Kampe, Kaji Loro, Joseph McAuliffe, PJ Mooney, Daniel Noon, Connor O'Doherty, Alexander Papa, Jolie Peal, Grace Porter, Daniel Richter, Hannah Rodricks, Thomas Rusch, Jordan Sauer, Jon Schroeder, Cameron Snyder, Erica Steiner, James Townley, Rebecca Townley, Roseclaire VandeVegt and Paul Weist.

Second Honors for 8th Grade: Rachel Beck, Mitchell Blaine, Doug Brown, Leo Burns, Kyle Cimino, Samantha Cochrane, Godwin Djossou, Charles Ehlers, Gianluca Green, Nolan Gurney, Carter Hancock, Charlie Herold, Henry Johnson, Caressa Jones, Joseph Kastl, Clara Kidder, Tatum Kuti, Tristen Kuti, James Lang, Marissa Morris, Theodore Novotny, Edward Okosi, Morgan Ortner, Andrew Osborn, Jacob Owens, Michael Pavel, Cassie Petersen, Reagan Redburn, Peyton Rohlfs, Will Schroeder, Michael Sitti, Thomas Stolze, Eleanor Walter, Owen Whittinghill, Madison Worthy and David Wunderlich.

From the list of honor roll students you can see we have many students who are studying very hard and keeping their behavior in check! Our thanks to these students for their hard work and to their parents for the wonderful support they provide to their children. It takes the students, their parents and the teachers working together to succeed with such outstanding academic achievement. Congratulations to all!

Trivia Night is Back Last year as part of our 60th year anniversary celebrations we hosted our first trivia night. We have heard from many people who would like to make this an annual event. So we have heard your wishes and are currently trying to schedule a date. To make this happen, it takes many hands. First off, we need to find committee chairs. The most important thing is that people have fun (and at the same time it raises a little money for the parish).
