CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish September 6, 2015 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, I have a number of thoughts rattling around in my mind as I write this week’s letter. Rather than focus on a particular theme or on the Gospel for the weekend, I would like to touch base with you on a few things. As you know, now that we have paid off our debt on the Youth Center, we have turned our focus to completing one of the aspects of the parish Master Plan that was left off the table when our capital campaign got underway a few years ago. We have embarked on the project of refurbishing the church parking lot. The current condition of the parking lot is obviously deteriorating, but we are doing what we can to maintain it until we are able to begin the major work of renovating. We realize that the stripes for the parking spaces are virtually non-existent, but we are trying to hold off on the expense of re-striping until we get the parking lot construction underway. There are many pieces to the puzzle, so there will be a number of steps to take before we can implement the project. Engineering plans for the new parking lot are currently in progress, and landscaping designs are being drawn up. After we have these, we will need to take our designs before the diocesan building commission to get their approval, and then to the city for their approbation. At a later point, we will seek bids for the construction work, and finally select the best company for the job. Realistically, when all the pieces come together, we will look at starting work sometime after the new year. We appreciate your patience as we continue the process, and we ask for your prayers as the project progresses. Once everything is done, we should have a beautiful parking lot that will showcase our wonderful parish. On another note, we recently employed Sr. Annette Wagner, IWBS, to coordinate our adult education programs full time. For several years, Sr. Annette has been working here part-time while she worked for the diocese part-time in the Office of Consecrated Life. Now that she no longer works on the diocesan level, she can devote her time to developing our adult education opportunities. We encourage you to take advantage of our courses and invest more in learning your faith. I want to especially challenge younger families and adults to take time out of your busy lives to get to know your Faith better. One thing that has become glaringly obvious in recent years is how little our young people know about God and about their religious beliefs. There doesn’t seem to be the same kind of priority in forming a child’s faith as in the past. That doesn’t mean that it is any less important. In fact, it is even more critical these days that children have faith inculcated in their lives so that they can have a foundation for the many challenges that they will face as they mature. It is not something that one can introduce at some later time and expect that it will be sufficient. Like all things, a foundation of faith builds on itself. It requires much reinforcement and slow maturity. I encourage all parents to take religious education even more seriously than secular education. Faith is the most precious gift that we can have. When all else is lost, faith is what we hold on to. Finally, Pope Francis is set to visit the United States from September 22th - 27th. It is certainly going to be a very special moment of grace. During his visit, he will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra a Saint. Junipero Serra was instrumental in establishing a number of missions and he helped evangelize a More Than 50 Years of Faith!

” Dear Friends,

I have a number of thoughts rattling around in my mind as I write this week’s letter.

We have embarked on the project of refurbishing the church parking lot. great number of people. This is a significant moment for the Church in America and a source of great blessing to have another saint from America. Pope Francis will also give speeches before a Joint Session of Congress, as well as before the United Nations General Assembly. He will also participate in the World Meeting of Families. These are very momentous and rare occasions for all of us as Catholics. I encourage you to watch as many events as you can and, in the meantime, pray that it will be an an effective visit, which will draw people closer to Christ. Pray especially for families. We live in a state where families are suffering greatly because of brokenness, abuse, divorce, strain, and stress. We pray that we can all respond to Christ, who came to open us up to his wondrous love!

God bless!

16th with an 11 a.m. Mass for our deceased spouses. Then we gather for our meal in the Parish Hall to celebrate and reminisce about our own school days of long ago! We will see you soon on the 16th, in church!

Interested in Sponsoring Luncheon? The Newman Center, the Catholic Church on the campus of TAMU-CC and the mission church to St. Pius X, is seeking ministries or individuals to sponsor a luncheon for the stu-dents after the weekly mass on Wednesday’s. The campus is growing with a strong presence of Catholic faithful. Many of the students are far from home and miss the family

contact. Finding a church family is a strong bond to continue faith forma-tion and development in this age group. To sponsor a lunch during the fall semester, please contact Amy Baragee at [email protected] or call 361-879-5448.

Pop a Top for a Good CauseOur Acts of Charity committee continues

to collect pull-tabs to turn into the Ronald McDonald House so that they can redeem

and use the monies for their needs. So many of us just throw these away, so we are asking you to save the pull tabs off of your soda, beer and all other cans with pull-tabs. You can drop them in the designated box in the back of the church, or drop by the parish office, and we will take to the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks for your support!

RCIA Inquiry Sessions all Sundays in August

Inquiry sessions for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) are now meeting. If you are not a

member of the Catholic Church and are simply curious; if you are a Catholic returning to the Church; if you are a Catholic in need of your First Communion and Confirmation, join the RCIA team on Sunday in CC-2 from 9:00 to 9:45 AM. You, too, may be able to say that RCIA “has been a beautiful journey of exploring and learning about my spiritual life. “ For more information, contact Sister Annette Wagner at 993-0299 or [email protected]. (Walk-ins are welcome!)

Happy Labor Day Weekend! In the past week, we had our Gospel Value of the Month Lunch with the Principal, the students enjoyed a noon dismissal on Friday and the teachers and staff

attended an afternoon of recollection about family with Sister Annette on Friday afternoon. Friday night was also St. Pius X School Night with the Hooks in which a portion of the proceeds from tickets sold at the school came back to our Athletic Department. In addition, I was able to throw out the ceremonial 1st pitch and I didn’t hit anybody or throw it over the backstop!

Student Council officers were elected on August 28th. Those elected were: Alexis Alaniz (6th) – President, Ryan Lennan (6th) – Vice-President, Kyler Ross (6th) – Secretary, Addy Harney (5th) – Treasurer and Caitlin Tatsch (4th) – Chaplain. These officers will serve our school well! They will be setting their service projects for the year at their first meeting on September 28th.

Congratulations are in order for Madison Janachovsky, a 6th grader, who was the winner of the Halloween t-shirt design contest and will have her drawing on the t-shirts this year. She will also receive a free t-shirt and $20 worth of carnival tickets. The second place winner was Addy Harney, a 5th grader. She will receive $10 worth of carnival tickets. The carnival seems like a long time away, however, it will be here before you know it.

Nine students were honored for being caught practicing the Gospel Manner of the Month which was “joy”. These students were treated to Jason’s Deli for lunch on Thursday. Bob and Sue Becquet of our parish have been sponsoring this program for the past 13 years. Our students thank you!

This coming week will be a short one for students and staff due to the Labor Day Holiday on Monday. When we return, we will celebrate Grandparents Day on Wednesday and our 5th and 6th Grade students will participate in a back to school Liturgy on Thursday. Our beloved grandparents are invited to join us for Mass on Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. and then visit the classrooms afterwards. Grandparents Day is not until Sunday, September 13th, but we celebrate it a little early since we do not attend school on Sunday. This Thursday, our 5th and 6th graders will participate in the annual “Liturgy to Begin the School Year” at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. This is an annual Mass that is celebrated by Bishop Michael Mulvey and the pastors of parishes that have schools. All of the Catholic Schools in the Diocese send their exiting classes to this Mass. Selected students from all the schools serve as lectors, altar servers, banner carriers and choir members. It will be an amazing sight to watch all the attending school students participate in this mass.

Continue to pray for the success of our Catholic School and Have a Great Week!
