UNLIKELY PARTNERS FOR PEACE

Ali Abu Awwad is a leading Palestinian activist teaching his countrymen nonviolent resistance, and reaching out to Jewish Israelis at the heart of the conflict. Ali has toured the world many times over, telling his riveting story of violent activism, imprisonment, bereavement and discovery of the path of nonviolent resistance—a story of personal transformation.

Sunday, October 9 | 7:00 PM | ASBI Congregation

Join Ali Abu Awwad and Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger as they share personal stories of their efforts to build a better future for their peoples. They come with no ready peace plans in hand, but only with the conviction that human understanding and trust will be the prerequisites for lasting justice, freedom, and peace on that tiny

sliver of land that they both call home.

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox rabbi and teacher and a passionate Zionist settler who has been profoundly transformed by his friendship with Ali. His understanding of the reality of the Middle East conflict and of Zionism has been utterly complicated by the parallel universe that Ali has introduced him to.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Get Out the Vote! Because this Election Season is (pick your own adjectives, because we

just don't have the words....) Sunday, September 18, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

At Anshe Emet Synagogue (3751 North Broadway)

ASBI’s Social Action Committee, in partnership with Anshe Emet Synagogue, is offering an opportunity for our area synagogues to share in the act of voter engagement. We will meet at Anshe Emet at 11:00 AM to eat together and explore texts that engage with the question of why is it important, as 21st Century Jews, to participate in the rights and privileges of our democracy. Following the session, we will have a brief training session on how to approach our neighbors and encourage them to register to vote in the November election. Those who wish will go out into the immediate neighborhood to participate in voter registration.

Please RSVP to [email protected].

Nechama: A Workshop to Comfort the Bereaved Wednesday, September 28, 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Temple Sholom (3480 N. Lake Shore Dr.)

Nechama is for grievers and their loved ones who have experienced a loss during the past 9 months. We will look at how Judaism lays the groundwork to provide comfort for the bereaved through the use of ritual and connection to

other mourners. Participants will learn about the grief process, coping mechanisms, different grieving styles, and how to gain and receive support

from friends and family.

This is a free workshop. To register, please contact Elizabeth Siegel Cohen, LCSW, at 847-745-5404

or [email protected].

Co-Sponsored by Anshe Sholom B'nai Israel, Anshe Emet Synagogue, Mishkan Chicago, and Temple Sholom.

UPCOMING EVENTS "PIOUS IRREVERENCE" BOOK LAUNCH WITH DOV WEISS

Wednesday, September 21, 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Join community member Dov Weiss at ASBI to celebrate and learn about his recently-published book, Pious Irreverence: Confronting God in Rabbinic Judaism. Copies of the book will be for sale at a special discount.

About Pious Irreverence: Judaism is often described as a religion that tolerates, even celebrates arguments with God. Unlike Christianity and Islam, it is said, Judaism endorses a tradition of protest as first expressed in the biblical stories of Abraham, Job, and Jeremiah. In Pious Irreverence, Dov Weiss has written the first scholarly study of the premodern roots of this distinctively Jewish theology of protest, examining its origins and development in the rabbinic age.

Dov Weiss is an Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies in the Department of Religion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed his PhD at the University of Chicago Divinity School as a Martin Meyer Fellow in 2011 and was the Alan M. Stock Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for Jewish Studies in 2012. After receiving rabbinic ordination from RIETS (Yeshiva University) in 1999 as a Wexner Graduate Fellow, Dov helped found Yeshivat Chovevei Torah (YCT) Rabbinic School where he served as Director of Operations and instructor of Talmud and Jewish Law.

Israel Movie Night “To Be or Not to Be” (1942)

Monday, September 26, 7:00 PM

When the Nazis invade Poland, a group of Polish actors with a lot of Nazi uniforms on their hands find a new role to play. As a spy arrives in Warsaw to

give the Nazis his latest information, the actors, led by Joseph Tura (Jack Benny) and his wife Maria (Carole Lombard), lead the Nazis a merry dance

with various charades, rescues and escapes.

Sponsored by the Israel Committee. Pizza, pop, popcorn, and chips will be served.

KOREN MACHZORIM IN 5777

ASBI is replacing our aging Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur machzorim with the machzorim that were published just a few years ago by Koren Publishers in Jerusalem, featuring the translation and commentary of former British chief rabbi, Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks. Koren's machzor enables English-speaking worshippers to connect in new ways to one of Judaism's oldest books. We invite you to honor your friends and loved ones and to support the spiritual life of the shul by dedicating one or more machzorim sets, or making a donation towards the purchase of machzorim.

Visit asbi.org/mahzor-5777.html to participate or learn more. This is a special opportunity to make an investment into the spiritual future of our congregation, as these new machzorim will be a tool for our prayers for years to come. Rosh Hashanah starts October 2, so be sure to make your dedication soon!

Volunteer with Maot Chitim As the holidays approach, Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago is looking for volunteers! If you are interested in putting together an ASBI group to work together, contact David Schwartz at [email protected].
