AN ORIENTATION OF ORTHODOXYAN ORIENTATION OF ORTHODOXYAN ORIENTATION OF ORTHODOXYAN ORIENTATION OF ORTHODOXY

According to the Midrash, Moshe struggled to understand how to construct the Menorah. He needed a visual representation to better appreciate the details relating how the Menorah is supposed to be made and how it is supposed to look. This is not the only time where the midrash has history’s greatest prophet requiring extra help. The lesson of this midrash might help to bring Orthodox Judaism into sharper contrast with unorthodox ideologies.

With a wide-angle lens, we can see that the mitzvot of the Torah formally begin in parshat Yitro, with the Ten Commandments. They outline the standards for our theological and interpersonal relationships. The mitzvot relating interpersonal relationships become more detailed in parshat Mishpatim. Now, in parshat Terumah, the mitzvot relating a relationship with Hashem become more detailed.

Generally, the value and utility of interpersonal relationships are more obvious than the value and utility of a relationship with Hashem. When Hashem enters the dynamic, things get more nuanced. Our intuitions are no longer monolithic guides to a robust spiritual life. In an unorthodox culture, the details for casting the Menorah can be easily recast as minutiae, its utility for providing light eclipsing the specific way it is to be constructed or how it might look. Moshe’s struggling to understand an aspect of the mitzvah that seems exclusively for Hashem, with no readily apparent interpersonal value or utility, reflects an orthodox commitment to the details of a relationship that transcends our intuitions, moods, and rationality.
