For Your Seder Our member Shimon Shekhtman, currently facing a grave medical prognosis, has always been known to us by his Hebrew name. In our shul's official records, it is Semyon, as it was in the Soviet Union, but none of us ever called him that. A few years ago, on a Sunday morning in early April, he recalled preparing for Pesach, saying that he always observed the holiday even though it would mean losing his job if the Soviet authories found out. In the old Soviet Union, that meant losing everything. So, every spring, Shimon would arrange a "business" trip to Moscow, so that he could buy his matza at the synagogue there. He would not buy matza in Kishinev, where he lived, because the KGB had a man taking photographs from a second-floor window across the street from the synagogue. Whenever Shimon had a yahrzeit to observe, he would go to that synagogue—with the collar of his coat turned up, and wearing a large hat with the brim turned down, and large sunglasses. He laughed on that Sunday as he touched the p of his nose, because that, he said, is all that would show. When you celebrate the fesval of our freedom, please think of Shimon, and feel free to pass his story along. And think of Semyon, too. And feel free - free! - to touch the p of your nose, and laugh.

PESACH 5779 ASBI wants everyone to have a festive Passover experience,

and we've got lots of options to help you get there!

• Hosting a seder? We are here to help! Rabbi Wolkenfeld, Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld, and Rabbanit Sarna are happy to offer advice and assistance.

• Experienced seder host? Consider offering even just one space at your table. If you are hosting a seder, please email [email protected] to let us know that you'd like some guests!

• Ready to be hosted? If you would like to be hosted at a seder, please email Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld at [email protected].

• In addition, we want to let you know about a new initiative called 2 for Seder. The family of Joyce Fienberg z"l, one of the victims of the Tree of Life attack, started this program to encourage Jews throughout North America to invite to their tables those who may never have been guests at a seder. To learn more, go to 2forseder.org/participate, or email Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld at [email protected] with questions.

Hametz Burning

We will have a hametz burning in the shul parking lot following Shacharit on Friday, April 19. Only small, symbolic quantities of hametz should be burned, and no plastic or aluminum may be thrown into the fire.

The full declaration of hametz nullification is recited on Friday morning. This is said while burning hametz, or it can be said at home by those who do not make it to burning. This declaration as well is printed in every Haggadah and can be found in the Koren and Artscroll siddurim.

The fire will be extinguished at 11:42 AM, so be sure to allow enough time to burn your hametz! Please note that there will be no parking in the lot after Shacharit until hametz burning ends.

Ta’anit Bekhorot Firstborn children are invited to attend a siyum commemorating the

completion of a talmudic tractate immediately following Shacharit on Friday morning, April 19. The siyum substitutes for a day of fasting that

commemorates God’s saving of the Israelite first-born children when the Egyptian first-born were killed in the tenth plague.

Shacharit begins at 6:45 AM, followed by siyum by Josh Lipman, and hametz

breakfast snack.
