Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 28, 2015 You changed my mourning into dancing;
O LORD, my God,
forever will I give you thanks.
— Psalm 30:13
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God did not make death, nor does
God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom
1:13-15; 2:23-24).
Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued
me (Psalm 30).
Second Reading — Your abundance should supply the
needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15).
Gospel — Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43
[21-24, 35b-43]).
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey
Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters,
the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at
church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was
setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number
five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the
fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the
porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maxi-
mum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride,
and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a
public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway
and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He
needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related
and give them some instruction. He would direct the
groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then an-
nounce the monetary amounts to the interested
passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church
for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and
groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move
from home to church and the shift from the bride’s fa-
ther to the priest’s authority helped to protect the free-
dom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the
Wife of Bath.

THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings
teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading,
from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from
Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will
us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through
the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s
stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and
resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is
from God. As the Son of God he does not will that
anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power,
the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the
Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could
raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your
sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of
new life from Christ demands our response in charity.

A Prayer for Healing Cancer
Heavenly Father, I come before you with a solemn heart and in need of your intercession. I pray that the cancer that has come into my life soon fades into a quick remission.
I believe in your capacity for miracles, and ask for this on my behalf. As we grow older, I know we become closer to the day you accept us back into your kingdom. I ask that you delay that holy union if it be your will. In your name I pray,
Amen.
Thank you to all for your help, assistance with monetary donations, food, prayers, visits & phone calls. God bless you all.

Vacation Bible School
Throughout the week of
Vacation Bible School we
learned that all things are
possible with God’s mighty
power and unending love. Children were
taught to “Hold on” to God. Prior to Vacation
Bible School we prayed that God would send us
His children and He sure did. There were 129
kindergarten through fifth grade children
registered as well as 25 youth volunteers.
Hooray!
I would like to thank everyone for your prayers,
donations and sharing of your time and talents.
With the help of all our wonderful and generous
parishioners the week of Vacation Bible School
proved to be a great success. We were able to
bring God’s word to so many children and help
them grow closer to our Lord. Please continue
to pray for the children and the growth of their
relationship with God. Thank you again!

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe
Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe and patroness of the Americas, you brought an end to the
human sacrifices on the Aztec altars in the 16th century by means of your image on the
cloak of St. Juan Diego. So now we ask you to come to our aid and bring an end to the
sacrificing of our preborn children on the altar of sexual excess and convenience. Bring us
leaders who will respect life from the first moment of conception until natural death. Make
them strong, honest and moral men and women. And, through their efforts, save our nation
from moral annihilation and make us a culture of life! Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of
Peace, save the nations and peoples of this continent! Amen.
