Monday, January
22nd is the Day of Prayer for the
Legal Protection of Unborn
Children, which is the observance of
the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
Join millions of people by giving
witness on that day: pray especially
for an end to abortion; fast, do
penance and perform works of
mercy; make the trek to Olympia to
attend the Mass & March for Life.
Bearing witness to our Faith in any
of these ways is cooperation with
God’s grace, and it makes amends
for abortion.
Monday, January 22nd
Parish offices/churches will be
closed for the day
9:30am – Mass at Marcus Pavilion – St. Martin University, Lacey
Following Mass – Assemble at the capitol – Olympia (Those wishing to march assemble near the Winged Victory statue; otherwise assemble at the capitol steps.)
Noon - short walk from the statue to the capitol steps followed by the rally for life
The rally is not long: less than 2 hours. Dress for the weather – it is typically cold and, sometimes windy/rainy. Be prepared for extended standing.
We hope to see you there!!
THIS WEEK’S: 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading —(1 Samuel 3:3-10, 19)
Responsorial Psalm —(Psalm 40)
Second Reading —
(1 Corinthians 6:13-15, 17-20)
Gospel —(John 1:35-42)
NEXT WEEK’S: 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading— In this reading from Jonah,
the Lord has requested for a second time that
Jonah preach repentance to the citizens of Nine-
veh. Upon the first request, Jonah fled to the
city of Tarshish. After much delay, Jonah finally
preached repentance to the Ninevites. Much to
the surprise of Jonah, all the citizens of Nineveh,
“great and small,” repented of their sins against
God. The call for repentance from sin was a
consistent strand in Israel’s prophetic tradition.
We see in this reading from Jonah the divine
invitation extended to other nations, including
those counted among Israel’s enemies. It antici-
pated one of the basic teachings of Jesus:
“Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”
(Jonah 3:1-5, 10)
Responsorial Psalm—“Teach me your
ways, O Lord.” (Psalm 25)
Second Reading—Paul’s eschatological
worldview which we hear in this reading, was
likely part of the message the he preached to
the Christians during his time in Corinth. This
perspective raised some very practical questions
for the Corinthians, not the least of which were:
How should they live in this eschatological ten-
sion? How should they carry on with their lives
waiting for the Second Coming of Christ? Paul
urged them in this letter to live radically different
lives. (1 Corinthians 7:29-31)
Gospel—Mark tells us that after His baptism
and temptation in the desert, Jesus officially
began His public ministry in Galilee. This Gospel
reading presents the first words spoken by Jesus
in the Gospel of Mark: “This is the time of
fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Jesus chal-
lenged His would-be followers to begin thinking
and feeling differently in the light of the good
news of the arrival of the reign of God.
(Mark 1:14-20)
Lenten Soup Suppers at Both Parishes
In the Lenten season we embrace prayer, fasting, and alms giving. Join us for soup suppers and Friday Devotions each Friday this Lenten season as one way to observe these three key penitential practic-es of Lent.
The soup suppers will be served every Friday during Lent from 5:00 to 6:00PM in the par-
ish hall followed by Friday devo-tions in the church. The suppers consist of simple meatless soups.
Parish groups or individual fami-lies are invited to sign up to spon-sor a soup supper on one of the Fridays during Lent. All alms given at the soup suppers will go to CRS Rice Bowl.
Please contact either parish office to sign up for a Friday or with any questions.

The Burning of the Palms
Palm leaves obtained from church on Palm Sunday are
blessed, and therefore are holy objects. Once an object is
blessed it is considered to be in the service of God and
therefore should be treated with respect.
We will have a Burning of the Palms service at each parish:
St. Joseph Parish, Sunday, February 11th follow-
ing the 10:30AM Mass
Queen of Angels Parish, Tuesday, February 13th
following the 6:00PM Mass
Please drop off your blessed palms in the receptacles at
the back of the churches by end of business, Friday, Febru-
ary 9th. The ashes from these burned palms will be used at
Masses on Ash Wednesday.
We bid fond farewell & godspeed to the following parishioners:

Many thanks to all who were so sup-portive of the “Baby Bottle Fundrais-er” this past October. Your contribu-tions totaled more than $1,000. This will be a great help to us, as we move forward with this year’s projects.

Walking with St. Francis
Almighty, eternal, just and merciful God, grant us in our misery the grace to do for You alone what we know You want us to do, and always to desire what pleases you.
Thus, inwardly cleansed, interi-orly enlightened, and inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit, may we be able to follow in the foot-prints of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
And, by Your grace alone, may we make our way to You, Most High, Who live and rule in per-fect Trinity and simple Unity, and are glorified God all-powerful forever and ever. Amen.
