“Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.”

Lev. 19:2

Happy Presidents’ Day weekend! By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be back in Reno but I’m writing this while on my way back to Rome to catch the plane home because I want to email it in time for the bulletin. I am grateful for this time away and the travel through Italy with my brother. Seeing the countryside through the window of the trains has been great. The towns and cities each have had a different flavor and feel about them. The one constant in each has been our visits to the churches. They are hundreds of years old and all contain beautiful paintings or mosaics and statues, from the little towns to the big cities. There never seemed to be enough time to see everything in the church but a perusal and a quick prayer moved us on to the next site. The Basilica of San Marco is the amazing Cathedral of Venice with fantastic mosaics, done over a period of eight centuries! The mosaics brought my memory back to the mosaics of St. Peter’s Basilica, though St. Peter’s are not as ancient. It seemed the perfect way to conclude my Italian journey that be-gan at the Vatican. I am grateful to Fr. Lucio and the priests who helped out with the masses in my absence and the staff who helped coordinate matters that needed attention via my emails. Thanks as well to all of you who kept me in prayer as I traveled. You were remembered in prayer as well. One of the things that needed attention was the coming of the French Boys Choir this weekend. If you’re reading this on Saturday, it’s not too late to hear them as they will be singing for the 5:00pm mass and again at the 9:30am mass on Sunday. The concert is at 7:00 on Saturday night. Special thanks to Anne who helped in the coordinating and to those families hosting the boys in their homes. It wouldn’t be possible for the boys to travel in this way, sharing their music, if they had to pay for hotel rooms everywhere. Plus, the opportunity for them to interact with Americans, and us with them, is beau-tiful. I hope you have (or had) the opportunity to come and hear them this return trip in our acoustical Cathedral! This Monday we celebrate Presidents’ Day as a nation so we are given a good opportunity to pray in thanksgiving for the country in which we live and to pray for respect for our democracy among all peo-ple, especially our leadership. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00am on Monday. In this election year it also is a good time to pray for the guiding Spirit to help us in discerning our vote in elections. It is important that we become informed about the candidates and issues as well as our Catholic teaching so that we can engage in thoughtful dialogue with one another. If you are eligible to vote and have not yet regis-tered I encourage you to register so that your voice may be heard not only for the presidential race, but, equally important, our many local races and issues. In many ways those local concerns affect our daily lives and those of our neighbors more than the national race. The Book of Sirach reminds us today that we are given a choice, by virtue of being children of God. “Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him.” In spite of what some might propose, electoral races and ballot questions are rarely simple, clear cut or black and white. What brings life and what brings death, good or evil, often must be determined through shades of gray. In addition to dialogue, we need prayer and discernment, as Sirach notes, “Immense is the wisdom of the Lord.” Blessings to you all this 6th week in Ordinary Time!

FROM FATHER CHUCK

Knock ... . . and the Door sha l l be opened to thee

A pastor went out one Saturday to visit his church members. At one house it was obvious that someone was home, but nobody came to the door even though the pastor had knocked several times. Finally, the pastor took out his card and wrote: "Revelations 3:20" on the back of it, and stuck it in the door. {Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him and him with me.} The next day, the card turned up in the collection plate. Below the pastor's message was the notation "Genesis 3:10". {I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.}
