A Typical Day• Arriving at School

– Greeted at the bus with a staff member– Greeted at the drop off by a staff member– Students walk directly to the classroom with staff members on duty

throughout the building/hallways

• Morning Meeting– Greeting, Sharing, Activity, News & Announcements

• Curriculum– Storytown is the CORE Language Arts Program– Math Expressions is the CORE Mathematics Program

• Specials: Art, Music, Computers, Gym, Library– Scheduled throughout the week (art, music and gym are taught by a certified

teacher; computers and library are visited with the classroom teacher)

Storytown - Language Arts

• Research-based developmental program. Foundation is high-quality children’s literature, as well as informational texts. Sequences essential skills and strategies into a clear, organized model for instruction

• Features a direct approach to teaching language arts. Emphasis is on explicit teaching (I do, We do, You do)

Storytown - Language Arts

• Provides ample practice of the skills using activities suited to all types of learners

• Skills are introduced, reviewed and assessed; re-taught if needed

Other Important Information to Know

• Symphony Math - computer based program to build number sense; can be used at home

• Lexia Learning - literacy based program to build phonic and phonemic awareness skills; can be used at home

• Response to Intervention - a time in the schedule when students that might need additional assistance are provided with small, direct instruction at their point of need

sure the office has your most up to date contact information• Be on Time - school starts at 8:50. Please do your best to

ensure that your child is here to start their day with their classmates; morning meeting is a critical part of the day

• Appointments, Vacations, Etc. - please try to schedule all appointments and/or vacations when school is not in session

• Attendance Policy - 20 unexcused absences will be reviewed by our Attendance Review Committee; note that 3 early dismissals or 3 tardies count as one unexcused absence

• Principal’s Newsletter -On the first day of the Storytown cycle you will receive a newsletter from the office; this will also be posted on our website

• Communication - this is key; let us know how we can help you; make small things stay small

• PTO - meets monthly as noted on the district calendar; Tuesdays at 6:30 pm; various events throughout the year; get involved and become a part of this wonderful group of individuals

Other Important Information to Know• District Nutrition Policy- the district does have a policy

in place to promote health and wellness among all students and staff; with this in mind please adhere to providing your child with a nutritious and healthy snack each day; additionally any birthday treats or any other treats should always include a healthy choice option for our students

• Visitors Policy - visitors are welcome at JHS however to ensure the safety of all students and staff it is expected that visitors with have a specific purpose when coming to JHS; all visitors must sign in at our main office and obtain a visitor’s badge

• Dropping Off - utilize the drop off loop and drop your child off to the staff member on duty; if you want to walk your child to the front door you can do so but just park in the parking lot

• Picking Up - utilize the pick up route/line and have your pick up tag on your mirror that matches the tag that is on your child’s backpack

• Bus Policy - riding the bus is a privilege; the district has a progressive discipline policy – First Offense - classroom teacher handles– Second Offense - principal handles; can result

in a suspension for 1-3 days from the bus– Third Offence - principal handles; can result in

a suspension of a specific number of days or removal from the bus entirely
