The Great American Smokeout – November 17

Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout. If you use tobacco, consider using the date to make a

plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking (or using other tobacco products) that day.

Watch for a communication coming from Human Resources, inviting you to participate in the smokeout (whether you use tobacco or not).

You may even win a prize!

Did you know? About 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable

cause of disease and premature death in the United States.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Karen Buckwald at [email protected] or dial x22755.

Advancement of our StudentAssistants  through the

Face to Pace Program – HR’s pilot

Human Resources initiated, developed and piloted a student worker mentorship program, called Face to Pace, which is successfully in its second year. Through this voluntary program, the student employees working in Human Resources completed a questionnaire and were then matched up with a staff member in Human Resources who volunteered to mentor. Students were asked to meet with their mentors at least once month, and preferably be prepared with questions or an agenda they wanted to discuss. Meetings ranged from informal lunches where the two discussed the student's collegiate experience, to formal mock interviews and reviews of the student’s resume. The students quickly felt like part of the HR team, got to know the staff, and the staff got to know them, thus "Face to Pace" became a two-way street. The students participated in employee morale-boosting events and lunches, and learned more about the Human Resources organization than they would have if they were not in the program. Several students obtained full or part time positions in our Human Resources department upon graduating. One student changed her major to HR.

The following is an excerpt of one Face to Pace

participant’s feedback:

My name is Julia St. Clair and I’ve been working in Human Resources for two and a half years. While I am currently a PT Clerical employee, I spent two years working as a Student Assistant while pursuing my undergraduate degree.   During my time here, I’ve learned a lot, including how the dynamic of human resources shapes a company, made evident not only by observing the other departments within the division, such as Staffing & Recruitment and Benefits & Compensation, but also in my Face to Pace meetings with my mentors Karen Buckwald and Luciana Ziegler. I believe the Face to Pace program really helps students learn and grow in their respective department, since it bonds them with full time staff and gives them the chance to see exactly

how a department is run. It provides students a chance to learn, grow and make connections they normally are never given the chance to take. Furthermore, working as a student assistant in HR made me feel like part of the department, like you’re family, something I feel not a lot of jobs, internships, etc.are able to fully succeed in making students feel.
