A little About The Teacher

▪ My name is Ms. April Fleming. I began working with children my senior year of high school (2001) in a daycare. From that moment on I knew that I wanted to teach children and I haven’t stopped yet. This upcoming year will mark my 15th year of working with children and I can honestly say that I love it as much now as I did when I first began.

▪ In 2008 I graduated from Wayne State with my Bachelor’s Degree for Elementary Education. During that time I student taught in 3rd grade. Since then I have taught 2nd grade, 6th & 8th grade (ELA & Math) and this will be my fifth year teaching 4th grade.

▪ This is my fifth year teaching at P.A.C.E and the experience has been great. I am confident that this year with the assistance of you, the parents will be even better than last year. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and your child and having a great year.

Curriculum

Homework Policy:▪ Homework is given regularly as a tool to reinforce the skills previously

learned and those learned that day. Practice makes perfect so it is important for students to get practice at home as well as in class. As stated in the Student Handbook, homework assignments must be turned in on time to receive full credit. If a student doesn’t submit their homework by the last school day of the week it was assigned they will be given a letter explaining that the student didn’t complete their homework and will have the weekend to complete the assignments and return them the morning of the next school day. Students that do not complete and return assignment will be required to participate in Homework Attention during lunch on Monday where assignments will be completed with students receiving a mark down of 5%. Assignments not completed will receive a 0. After students are missing 2 assignments a phone call will be made home by the teacher.

▪ Please contact me for any questions or concerns with homework.

Progress Reports/ Report Cards

Progress reports are sent home once a quarter (see school calendar for dates) Please take the time to review them with your child and write down any questions/concerns you may have. Appointments can be made with me to discuss them before report cards come out. In most cases waiting until report cards come home is too late and grades will not change.

Page 14: Welcome to Fourth Grade Ms. Fleming Reading, Math & Science Room 257.

I use a point system for behavior rewards and consequences. Students earn points for following expectations and going beyond those expectations. Students lose point by not following the Warrior Ways. Rewards and Consequences are based off points earned.

– Points are tracked both manually on the board with a T chart for whole class and digitally for individuals.

Individual tracking is done through Class Dojo.

–With class dojo parents can be alerted when students receive points and also when points are deducted as well as the reasons.

Behavior

Student Lead Conferences

▪ When discussing academic and behavior progress in the class room, we have found it most beneficial for students to be present. This year all students are required to attend conferences to help develop ownership conferences will be student led. Students will have the opportunity to explain any poor behavior and or low performance in academics in the presence of the teacher and parent and together we come up with an appropriate solution. Conferences will be held over the course of 2 days each quarter (see school calendar for dates). Sign-up is done electronically by using the link on my class webpage or the schools webpage.
