A Higher CallingA Higher CallingA Higher CallingA Higher CallingA Higher CallingThe First Reading reflects the utter ingratitudeof the Israelites & God’s persistence in blessingthem with signs of His love. They had no food inthe desert, so God sent them manna and quailfrom the sky. To this rescue, the people respondedwith complaint. They had been rescued alreadyfrom many dangers, including their slavery in Egypt, but no matter how many times they were rescued, they refused to trust in God’s providence.

In contrast to the utter lack of gratitude in the First Reading, today’s Responsorial

In today’s Second Reading, St. Paul encourages us to live out our Christian

Psalm is one of tremendous gratitude. The Psalmist recounts God’s graciousnessto our ancestors, with thanks for all His wonderful deeds. Still today, we see God’sfingerprints in the many ways He guides us, through everyday events. SometimesGod intervenes with power, while usually it is subtle, but no less loving.

In today’s Gospel, we find Jesus calling us to a higher understanding. Jesus istelling His disciples that He Himself is thereal manna, the real Bread from heaven, true spiritual nourishment. The people didnot want to change their lives in followingHim, they just wanted to watch Him workmiracles and for this He takes them to task.He doesn’t give up on them, He keepscalling them higher. Jesus reveals Himselfas God’s wisdom. Wisdom, in the OldTestament, prepared a meal for those inneed of instruction. Whoever ate her bread and drank her wine would have eternallife. Jesus, Wisdom itself, is instructing the people; if they eat of Him, the truemanna & nourishment, they will have eternal life.

calling. As Christians we are called to behave in a new way, seeing things in a newlight. We are to treat others with respect, seeing the world through God’s eyes. Thisrequires a certain amount of discipline. Giving in to pagan carnal desires onlyenslaves us to them. True freedom comes when we live in the light of God’s truth.
