Block Registration

Registration for classes takes place starting June 9th 2018 at 12pm (Atlantic

Time). Registration will remain open until September; however, you are

encouraged to register as soon as possible to get your preferred timetable.

There will be enough space for all students in the program.

All Bachelor of Engineering students take the same classes in the first year of

study, so the registration process is simple. The classes have been grouped

together in blocks for the fall and winter terms; you select a block for Fall and

then Winter and you are registered for all your classes. There is no need to

choose classes, tutorials and labs, that has been done for you. Below are

detailed instructions on how to register.

There Fall blocks are named BENG-YR1-FA-01-##, where BENG is your degree,

then your year of study, the term, then block number with ## = 01, 02, …, 09.

The winter blocks are similarly named BENG-YR1-WN-01-##, where ## = 01,

02, etc.. All students within a block take lectures and tutorials together, and

most labs are shared. If you have any registration questions, we are here to

help – call us at 902 494 2450 or email: [email protected]

A Note on Errors

Sometimes labs in Physics and Chem-

istry fill before the Block is full, if this

happens:

In Physics, you can add one of the

alternative Physics labs highlighted in

yellow on the timetable.

Timetable: An online listing of the

courses offered at Dalhousie in a

given term.

In Chemistry, please contact the

Chemistry Department and they will

assist you: [email protected]

If you get an error indicating any

other section is full, then that engi-

neering block is at capacity. In that

case, drop all of the classes by se-

lecting Drop from the drop-down box

next to each class and click submit.

Repeat Step 4, choosing a different

Engineering Year 1 block.

Note: Your Fall and Winter block

numbers do not need to match—you

Should register for both

Note: if you drop any Fall classes

after registering for Winter, some of

your winter classes may be dropped

automatically because of prerequi-

site rules. Please do not drop any

classes unless you get authorization

from an engineering advisor.

Block Registration continued

Step 4: Register for Your Fall courses i. Scroll down until you see the set of blocks labeled: “BENG-YR1-FA-01-##”, where ## = 01, 02, etc. ii. Select the block for which you wish to register, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the Register button. iii. You will see confirmation that you are registered. Step 5: Register for Your Winter courses (repeat the process for “2018/2019 Winter”) i.Click on Return to Menu (top right) ii.Click on “Web for Students” iii.Click on “Registration” iv.Click on “Select Term”, choose “2016/2017 Winter” from the drop-down menu and click the “Submit” button. v.Click on “Block Registration” vi.Scroll down until you see the set of blocks labeled: “First BENG-YR1-WN-01-##”, where ## = 01, 02, etc. vii.Select any block for which you wish to register, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the Register button. viii. You will see confirmation that you are registered.

Discipline Choice

At the end of year one, engineering students must apply for Conditional Placement in their Discipline.

To do this, students complete the Discipline Choice Application (on-line) where they will rank their top 5 choices. This is emailed to students.

Students with a GPA of 3.3 or above, and the equivalent of first-year engi-neering complete, will be placed in their first choice of discipline. All other students will compete by GPA for the remaining spaces. There is space for all students. Everyone who completes their engineering diploma will have a discipline placement.

Deadline: April 30th following the first year of study.

Engineering Specialties—Disciplines

Deciding on a discipline can be a challenge for some students. To help with

the decision process, students should:

• Attend advising sessions, discipline tours, presentations and seminars.

• Consult websites of professional engineering associations.

• Explore the Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering website for guidance: engi-

neering.dal.ca

• Use the Engineering curriculum to follow progress in a given discipline.

• Attend the AU Open House and participate in activities.

We offer seven discipline options

(or specialties):

•Chemical Engineering

•Civil Engineering

•Electrical Engineering

•Environmental Engineering

•Industrial Engineering

•Mechanical Engineering

•Mineral Resource Engineering

(These disciplines also have

sub-specialties.)

A Message from the Director

Discipline Choice

There are many opportunities for you to become involved and stay connected. I believe

you will enjoy our program and the engineering community here at Dalhousie. Our team

of faculty and staff work closely together to help you to get the most out of your time

here at Dalhousie.

There are seven engineering disciplines for you to choose from and you will have plenty of

opportunities to explore your options before you apply for your discipline at the end of

your first year. I encourage you to participate in the activities related to discipline choice

to inform your decision. The more you learn, the better you will be situated to make the

right choice for you. All of our programs are fully accredited through the Engineers Canada

Accreditation Board and are recognized all over the world.

I wish you the best as you begin your engineering

studies.

George Jarjoura, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Director, Core Program

Together we succeed

We believe that all of our students have the potential for success in the engineering program. With the right supports, we can all succeed. and consists of four key elements:

• Early Alert • Academic Advising • Supplemental Instruction • Student Supports

Early Alert: We believe that through early intervention, we can connect students with services

as required in a timely manner.

Academic Advising: Students are required to seek advice/direction from professional Academic

Advisors on all matters related to their Engineering Program.

Supplemental Instruction: Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic program that supports

high-risk courses rather than high-risk students. Students with varying levels of academic

preparedness and

diverse backgrounds participate in these interactive sessions.

Other Student Supports: The Student Engagement Coordinator helps students connect with

resources and services such as: the International Centre, Writing Centre, Counselling Ser-

vices, and Dalhousie Engineering student societies. Our Peer Mentorship Program will also

help students make connections and help them to navigate through their first year of

university life.

Student Supports

Advanced Math Section

We are committed to helping you reach your potential in Engineering and want to challenge you whenever possible. We offer a special section of mathematics where the professor challenges his students. This is what some of our first year students had to say about the advanced section of MATH1280/MATH1290: - Dr. Kember is probably the best teacher I've ever had, all my classmates were smart, motivated, kind people. - I would take this class again in a heartbeat. - I appreciate that he challenged us so much, and I think that we are all better for it. - This course helped me gain introductory knowledge of many engineering con-cepts and the skills to solve a variety problems. - I am very grateful to Dalhousie for giving me a chance to participate in the advanced math section. - I learned an important learning method during his class – to use core knowledge to solve different questions. I used this efficient learning method in all 6 courses this term – I got A+ in five of them, so I continue keep using this strategy. - Dr. Kember taught us to find connections in the math we learned and apply this to materials in other courses. - It is a very demanding course and requires a lot of time. However, I would definitely take this course again if given the opportunity. If you are interested in a similar challenge, please complete this application: go.engineering.dal.ca/special-math

Successful students are enthusiastic, dedicated students with good math and time

management skills, an appreciation of the physical sciences, and a good work ethic.

Class size is variable, but generally first year classes can be as large as 450 students in

lectures, and are subdivided into smaller groups of no more than 60 students for tuto-

rials and labs. In later years, class size will depend on the discipline, and may vary from

20 to 140 students. Most upper-level classes average 30-60 students.

Program length depends on several factors, but the BEng program is eight or nine

academic terms, plus optional co-op work terms: a four-year program without Co-op,

or a five-year program with Co-op.
