The Castle has had many distinguished visitors. Edward 1 stayed here beforedefeating William Wallace at the battle of Falkirk, Henry IV unsuccessfullybesieged it for six months and Oliver Cromwell captured the castle in 1648.

Queen Victoria took tea in the Castle in 1840.
