Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions of the Month

Universal Intention: That volunteers may give them-selves generously to the service of the needy. Intention for Evangelization: That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.

Protecting God’s Children

There will be a Protecting God's Children class conducted in Spanish on Wednesday evening, August 26. All volun-teers who are working with our youth who have yet to at-tend a training session should plan on attending that even-ing.

Faith Formation Happenings

The back-to-school sales in all the stores indicate that the next academic year is justa round the corner. We’re also gearing up here for our next Faith Formation year. Here is a list of upcoming activities:

Registration—Are you new to the parish or did you just miss our registration in the spring? No pro-blem – you will have another opportunity after Mass for three consecutive week-

ends: August 22-23, August 29-30 and September 5-6

End of Summer Festival – We’re having a big

fundraiser to say goodbye to summer. On Friday, August 28, from 6:00 PM-10:00 PM, we will be having a celebration with food, fun family activi-ties, and music from DJ Doc’s Discs and band Efesus.

Cleanup Day – One week before classes start up, we

will have a classroom clean-up – Wednesday, Sep-tember 2, at 6:30 PM, during the normal class time. Even if you aren’t a catechist, we would sure appreciate your help!

Classes resume Wednesday, September 9, at 6:30 PM, and we could sure use some additional volunteer help to assist our catechists. Please prayerfully consider this impor-tant parish ministry. ***********************************************

The annual Eucharistic Congress in the diocese of Charlotte is a gathering of thousands of Catholics from

many parts of the Southeast who come together to celebrate our Lord’s Real Presence in the Eucharist. The goal of the Con-gress is to promote a deeper love for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and help attendees gain an under-standing of the social dimen-sion of the Eucharist and how Jesus unifies us, fuels our faith, and how through Him, we put our faith into action in the world.

This 2-day event, which takes place this year on Sep-tember 11 & 12, is held at the Charlotte Convention Center in Downtown Charlotte and features engaging nationally-known speakers whose talks focus on the dif-ferent dimensions of the Eucharist, a Holy Hour and Eu-charistic Procession, Confession, Eucharistic Adoration, and Sacred Music. But at the heart of the event is the celebration of the Eucharist – the Holy Mass – which is celebrated by the Bishop, and concelebrated by the priests of our diocese.

The Congress welcomes all ages, with sessions for adults, break-out groups for grades 1-12, college and young adults, and special cultural programs for our Hispanic and Vietnamese communities. Attendees be-come part of a spiritually unifying event which brings together the priests, deacons, seminarians, religious, and lay faithful of the diocese, all under our Bishop, and this event highlights the social dimension of the Eucharist, exposing children and teens what it means to live “a Cath-olic culture”, and how they can put their faith into prac-tice. Discussion Questions 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time

August 9, 2015

First Reading / 1 Kings 19:4-8 1. In this reading sometimes we are Elijah and sometimes we are the hearth cake. Think of times in your life when you wanted to cry, “Enough” and you could have used help. Did it come? How? 2. God sent help to Elijah in the form of an angel. What kind of help do you think God would send today? Name some ways you can be the “hearth cake“ for a person in a desperate state. Second Reading / Ephesians 4:30-5:2 1. Do you think you could get better at “being an imitator of God?” How? Is it more likely to happen all at once because you want it to, or a little at a time because you work at letting God into you? If you were going to work at this, where would you start? 2. Do you know any ”imitators of God?” What kinds of things do/did they do? Gospel / John 6:41-51 1. The crowd murmured when Jesus said he was the bread that came down from heaven. How did know-ing his mother and father impact the crowd’s will-ingness to believe him? Is it easy to accept a “prophet (one who speaks for God) in your own cir-cle of acquaintances? Explain. 2. “And the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Explain this statement from the Gospel in the light of what Pope Francis says be-low. What is one way Jesus gives his flesh for the life of the world now? And, with the love of Jesus, receiving the Eucharist, our life becomes gift, as Jesus’ life was. Do not for-get these two things: the measure of the love of God

is to love without measure. And, following Jesus, with the Eucharist we make our life a gift. Angelus Address, Vatican City, June 22, 2014
