In the summer of 1787, delegates, including our university’s namesake James Madison, gathered in Philadelphia to accomplish the difficult task of creating a constitution. The weather was sweltering, the days were long and it didn’t help that the delegates were dressed in wool from head to toe. They went through rough times but with support from each other created the Constitution, a work that has governed our country for more than two centuries! The year 1787 was a turning point in our country’s history just like 1787 August Orientation will be a turning point for you as the start of your new JMU experience.
