FEAST OF FAITH Gathering When Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States in 2008, tens of thousands gathered in Yankee Stadium to celebrate the Eucharist with him. What made them differ-ent from all the other excited crowds who have assem-bled there through the years? When they began to sing together, to listen together, to pray together, they ceased to be a crowd, and became a liturgical assembly. It was not where they were but what they did that set them apart. The Gospels speak of many instances when Jesus prayed alone to his Father. But Jesus also put a special value on communal prayer. “Where two or three are gathered together in my name,” he told his disciples, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). Jesus gave his own mission to his followers, sending them forth to do everything he did: to heal, to teach, to proclaim the kingdom. Jesus wants us to meet God in and through each other. So the Christian community continues to gather, Sunday after Sunday. When we get up on Sunday morning and come to Mass, we respond to Jesus’ invita-tion, and we express our trust in his promise that when-ever we come together, he comes, too. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT A CLASSIC IMAGE

When we think of today’s Gospel, the image of this meeting between the Angel Gabriel and Mary by Fra Angelico (1440–1445) likely comes to mind. In this fres-co, Gabriel and Mary are outside sitting among the col-umns, and Gabriel, with his big wings and hands crossed, gazes upon Mary and gestures towards her. She is well dressed in a traditional blue garment, and though her face shows shock, her folded hands model submission and humility. This work of art is so beautifully executed that we can miss some of its finer details. Similarly, be-cause the Gospel scene is so familiar, we can forget to take in its small details. A few years ago, this author found a children’s book called “The Nativity” illustrated by Julie Vivas. Because her drawings were so fresh and charming and simple, she invited new perspective on the story. LOOKING AGAIN

Luke says that Mary “was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.” She asks, “How can this be?” These questions don’t fit with how Fra Angelico positioned Gabriel and Mary. In the Vivas illustrations, the Angel Gabriel sits down with battered wings and a balding head and has a cup of coffee with Mary as the two of them try to figure it out together. The text is the same, but the message con-veyed is different. There is a different degree of comfort and familiarity to these illustrations. This “having a cup of coffee” is something we need to learn to do with the scriptures and with our lives. After this event, pregnant Mary traveled into the hill country to be with Elizabeth; an older, wiser, mentor—a mother figure. She spent three months there reflecting and preparing for the birth of her child. In this final week of Advent, take a few moments to find a Gabriel/Mary or an Elizabeth/Mary moment and read the Christmas read-ings again to see what you might have overlooked, and to find a new way for Christ to dwell in you. FIESTA DE LA FE Pedimos perdón Como el amor de Dios es algo tan obvio, es posible que nos resulte un poco difícil explicarlo. Resulta aun más difícil explicarlo cuando en nuestra vida no nos hemos sentido amados por Dios, así como somos, en nuestra humanidad más plena. Si el amor es lo único que basta, si sólo Dios basta, como escribió santa Teresa, ¿cómo es que ese amor no nos llega? Pues sí nos llega, a todos y todas, lo que muchas veces sucede es que no siempre estamos abiertos a ese amor, en cierta forma, nos nega-mos a él, o bien, no respondemos a ese amor tan grande que recibimos de Dios. Por eso pedimos perdón durante la celebración de la Misa, porque no hemos amado a Dios como él nos amó; porque no hemos seguido su mandato de amar al prójimo como a nosotros mismos; porque no hemos caminado humildemente ante su presencia y tam-poco hemos vivido la justicia. Porque no hemos dejado todo para seguirlo. Le pedimos perdón mediante el Acto Penitencial, el Señor ten piedad o durante la Pascua, con la aspersión del agua bendita. CUARTO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO UNA IMAGEN CLÁSICA Cuando pensamos en el Evangelio de hoy, proba-blemente podemos imaginar la pintura de esta reunión entre el ángel Gabriel y María que hizo Fra Angelico (1440-1445). En ese fresco, Gabriel y María están afuera y sen-tados en medio de las columnas, y Gabriel, con sus gran-des alas y manos cruzadas, contemplando a María y ha-ciendo gestos hacia ella. Ella está bien vestida en un ro-paje tradicional de color azul y aunque su rostro muestra conmoción, sus manos cruzadas modelan sumisión y hu-mildad. Esta obra de arte está tan bellamente ejecutada que podemos desapercibir algunos de sus más finos deta-lles. Del mismo modo, porque la escena del Evangelio es tan familiar, podemos olvidarnos de los pequeños deta-lles. Hace unos años, este autor encontró un libro para niños titulado “La Navidad” que fue ilustrado por Julie Vivas. Debido a que sus dibujos eran tan frescos, encan-tadores y simples, convidaba una perspectiva nueva en la historia. VOLVER A MIRAR Lucas dice que María “estaba muy preocupada por lo que se le dijo y se preguntaba que tipo de saludo podría ser ese”. Ella preguntó: “¿cómo puede ser esto posible?” Estas preguntas no concuerdan como Fra Ange-lico puso a Gabriel y María. En las ilustraciones de Vivas, el ángel Gabriel sentado con las alas maltratadas, cabeza calva, está tomando una taza de café con María mientras los dos juntos tratan de resolverlo. El texto es el mismo, pero el mensaje transmitido es diferente. Hay un grado diferente de comodidad y familiaridad en estas ilustracio-nes. Este “tomando café” es algo que tenemos que aprender a hacer con las escrituras y con nuestras vidas. Después de este evento, María embarazada viajó a las colinas para estar con Isabel, una mentora sabia y ancia-na, la figura de una madre.
