Higher Apprenticeships“The Government’s ambition is for it to become the norm for
young people to achieve their career goals by going into an
Apprenticeship or to university to – in the case of some Higher
Apprenticeships – doing both.”
![Page 10: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• A higher and degree apprenticeship is a way to earn while you learn in a real job,
gaining a real qualification and a real future.
• Higher apprenticeships incorporate a work-based learning programme leading to a
nationally recognised qualification at level 4 and above, with level 4 and 5 being
equivalent to a Higher Education Certificate/Diploma or a Foundation Degree, level 6
equivalent to a Bachelor degree and level 7 equivalent to a Master’s degree.
• Degree apprenticeships are at level 6 and 7 and must include a Bachelors degree at
level 6 and a Masters Degree at level 7
• There are currently 75 higher and degree apprenticeships available (with more in
development)
• More of these specialised and highly skilled apprenticeships are being offered each
year.
What is a higher & degree apprenticeship?
![Page 11: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
How are they Structured

levels) –

• may include a work-based, academic or combined qualification
or include a professional qualification relevant to the industry
• includes study part-time at college, university or with training
provider

![Page 12: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Higher and degree apprenticeship standards in England
![Page 14: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Apprenticeship Reforms and Trailblazers
Background and Overview of Reforms
![Page 15: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Why are we reforming
Apprenticeships?• To meet the needs of the future economy and
businesses.• To ensure Apprenticeships are more rigorous and
responsive to the needs of employers following Richard Review
• Apprenticeships viewed with the same esteem as University
• The changes will build on existing strengths
![Page 16: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
What are the main aims of the reforms?
High qualityHigher expectations of
English and Maths, more assessment at end of Apprenticeship and
introducing grading.
Employer drivenEnsuring rigorous training that will
support economic growth
SimpleComplex frameworks to
be replaced by standards of around one page
written by employers.
![Page 17: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
• Standards designed by employers will replace existing Frameworks.
• New standards will be clear and concise, written by employers and no more than two pages long.
• All Apprenticeships will have an end-point assessment.
• Apprenticeships will be graded for the first time. • All Apprenticeships will last a minimum of 12
months.
What changes are we making to Apprenticeships?
![Page 18: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
• Employers want successful apprentices to be fully competent in their chosen occupation.
• All new apprenticeships will have an end-point assessment - apprentice will be required to demonstrate competency across the whole standard.
• End-point assessment will be synoptic – assessing skills and knowledge in an integrated way – and will be graded.
• Trailblazers will develop Assessment Plans which will set out their approach to assessment, including the end-point assessment – what, how and who should assess.
What does this mean for Apprenticeship assessment?
![Page 19: Welcome Apprenticeship & Traineeships Skills Show 2015.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697bfc31a28abf838ca58ba/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
