TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 27, 2015

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. JOHN CODYDear friends and parishioners of St. Christopher Parish:

1. Farewell Mark and Hello Deacon David! While we say farewell to Mark as our Music Director and promise him our best wishes and prayers in his new position at Immaculate Conception Parish, we give a warm welcome to Deacon David Loeffler, a 4th year Theology student at the Josephinum studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Phoenix, Arizona. Last year, David assisted us with our parish RCIA program. I was delighted that he was assigned here to St. Christopher for his deacon assignment! He is a very fine person with a great sense of humor and a zeal for service. I’m sure you’ll be delighted to meet him! Welcome, Deacon David!

2. Bereavement Ministry – One of the corporal works of ministry is ministering to the dying and to comfort those who mourn. After funerals here at St. Christopher, members of this committee host and serve a meal for the family after the funeral rites. This is a noble work. However, funds to pay for this are needed. Although we charge nothing for this to the families, many of them make a freewill donation to support this ministry. We’d like to ask for donations to this on the weekend of September 26 & 27.

3. Going to Rome – I’ll be traveling to the Eternal City for some vacation with my old friend and sidekick, Fr. Bill Metzger of Sts. Simon and Jude, West Jefferson. It will be exciting to be in Rome at the beginning of the Synod on the Family! I’ll be gone until October 8th and be back for Friday, October 9, but will leave again for the annual Canon Law Society of America convention in Pittsburgh, PA. I’ll be home from that on October 15th.

4. Evangelization – Bring a Friend or Family Member to Church! Evangelization is a big word that simply means: “handing on the faith.” In the past, we relied on the professionals to do this, the priests, brothers and sisters in religious life. With the diminishing numbers of the clergy and religious, and the increasing number of Catholics, the laity must get involved in this effort. The New Evangelization, much spoken of in today’s Church, has to do with outreach to nonpracticing Catholics. All of us know some who, for whatever reason, do not practice their faith. Sometimes, all it takes is an invitation to Church with us to get them back on track. Would that all would know the strength and comfort we receive through the Sacraments of the Church. Issue that invitation to someone you care about today! Come home to the Church in 2015!

5. Second Collections: September 26 & 27 – Bereavement; October 3 & 4 – Trinity Tuition Support; October 17 & 18 – World Mission Sunday.

Update on Mary’s Garden: As you may have noticed, the renovation of Mary’s Garden outside our church is progressing well. The stone edging was installed this week, and the landscaping will be the

next step. Because the original statue of the Virgin Mary was damaged, a new statue – which will be cemented to the pedestal – will be donated by the St. Chris Women’s Club. A dedication of the garden to Our Lady is planned for October. Although some of the materials and labor were donated, some costs have been incurred.
