Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

Jesucristo, siendo rico, se hizo pobre, para enriquecernos con su pobreza.

In the Unjust Steward, we encounter one who wasted his mas-

ter’s wealth and faces dismissal. To overcome the crisis, the ste-

ward reduces debts owed by poor neighbors in order to help them

out. Though the steward has sinned by squandering what belongs

to someone else, both the prudent way in which he goes about re-

solving the crisis coupled with relieving people who are in need can

be seen as a way to better steward the gifts entrusted to us by God.

Question of the Week

25th Sunday —Luke 16:1-13

Key Passage: ““The person who is trustwor-thy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours?” Question for adults: How do you use the same unselfish manner in small matters that you would use in more serious ones? Question for children: Why is it impor tant to not lie even about the smallest thing?

Pregunta de la Semana

25° Domingo —Lucas 16:1-13

Come to the Diocesan Youth Rally on Sept. 25th!

This year’s Youth Rally theme is “Thunderous Mercy.” As we reflect on this simple, yet powerful message, Joe Melendrez will lead us in ways to overcome fears and doubts that keep us from being the BOLD and HEROIC disciple we are called to be! Joe is a Catholic hip hop artist from Southern California who says, “I rap what is real to me and God is very real to me. It is my way of connecting with God and expressing an energetic message of faith, hope, and love for God’s children.”

So come celebrate with Joe and other high school aged youth from all over the Diocese what it means to have “Thunderous Mercy”! There will be Mass, Reconciliation, a keynote and concert by Joe, and in-teractive Corporal Works of Mercy. Cathedral of St. Joseph, Jefferson City, Sunday, Sept. 25th – 12pm registration, $10

In Jesus’ parable of the Unjust Ste-

ward, we encounter a financial manager

who has wasted his master’s wealth and

faces dismissal from his position. To

overcome the crisis confronting him, the

steward reduces some very considerable

debts owed by poor neighbors to his mas-

ter in order to help them out.

Though the steward has sinned

against God and his master by squande-

ring what belongs to someone else, both

the prudent way in which he goes about

resolving the crisis coupled with relieving

people who are in need can be seen as a

way to better steward the gifts entrusted

to us by God.

(TABLET) Pope Francis has en-dorsed an interpretation of his family synod document that allows divorced and remarried Catholics to receive the sacraments in certain circumstances.

Bishops from the Buenos Aires region of Argentina recently released a document saying that remarried cou-ples can be given communion if they find it impossible to live like “brother and sister”, can’t obtain an annulment and have been on a “journey of dis-

cernment”. They argue that the Pope’s docu-ment “opens up the possibility of ac-cess to the sacraments of Reconcilia-tion and the Eucharist” but stress it

should not be seen as “unrestricted access” in any circumstance. Francis has now praised their text saying it correctly spells out the way his apostolic exhortation, Amoris Lae-titia, should be understood and that “there are no other interpretations”.

Who is my neighbor?

Why Pope praises Argentinian bishops' correct interpretation of

Amoris Laetitia By Editor, Catholic News, September 13, 2016

(Interpretation continued) Significantly, the Pope’s response was published in the the Vatican’s newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, the publication where a significant number of articles presenting a papal-ly-approved understanding of Amoris Laetitia have been published in recent weeks. The Buenos Aires bishops wrote their reflection specifically on Chapter Eight of the text where the Argentini-an Pope writes in a footnote that the sacraments can be given to divorced and remarried Catholics in “certain circumstances.” On the papal plane returning from the Greek island of Lesbos in April, Francis said he had “forgotten” put-ting the footnote in and has studiously avoided giving a definitive yes or no over whether remarried Catholics can receive communion. But his approval of the Argentini-an bishops’ reflection is in keeping with a central point of Amoris Lae-titia, namely that popes do not need to settle every doctrinal or moral ques-tion, meaning that local churches can produce their own guidelines based upon pastoral and cultural considera-tions. At the same time his latest move is likely to anger once again conserva-tives who initially tried to argue that Francis’ family document did not al-low the divorced and remarried access to communion. More recently some have called for the Pope to clarify the text, alleging it contains a number of doctrinal errors. While Francis encouraged debate during the synod gatherings that pro-duced Amoris Laetitia he has been keen to counter interpretations which argue that his text is a break with Church tradition or that it makes no significant changes to pastoral prac-tice. To that end, he has named

(Interpretation concluded) Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, an eminent theologian who edited the Church’s most cur-rent edition of the Catholic cate-chism, as an official interpreter of the Amoris Laetitia document.
