The shorter, cooler days of late August and early September make it the ideal time to make permanent improvements to the condition of our lawn. In fact, turf experts agree that this is the best time of year to start a lawn from seed. If you have a new home that needs a lawn or you have bare areas that need new seed started, get right to it so the seeds will have a chance to sprout and get well established before the ground freezes. While this is the best season to tackle these projects, time is limited.

Starting a lawn from seed is one of the more challenging gardening tasks, mainly because of all the pre-seeding groundwork that should be done.

The fi rst step is to do a quick pH test on the area to see if the soil is acidic. If it is, apply enough pelletized lime to bring the soil back to neutral. The folks at your local garden center can help you fi gure this out. If you ignore this step and start seed in acidic soil, you’ll fi nd that the seeds will sprout nicely but the grass will struggle to survive and establish itself. Since starting a lawn from seed is so labor intensive, don’t ignore this step.

The next step in starting a lawn from seed is to turn organic matter into the area to be seeded. The more organic matter that is turned in, the thicker and more drought resistant the lawn will be for years to come. Peat moss is the easiest form of organic matter to use for improving the soil before seeding. Peat moss is capable of holding 20 times its weight of water. In very sandy soil, the addition of one 4 cu. ft. bale of peat moss per every 100 sq. ft. turned in to a depth of 6” will be necessary. This sounds like a lot of peat moss (and it is) but it is well worth the effort.

For a large area, you should rent a roto-tiller to blend the peat moss and lime (if needed) into the soil to a depth of 6”. Once the soil and peat are blended together, the area should be raked smooth. This is easier to accomplish with one of those extra-wide aluminum rakes. If you can’t borrow one, a metal bow rake will do but it will take longer to get the contour you’re looking for. Next you’ll need to roll the soil with a water-fi lled roller to compact the soil. If you can’t borrow one, rent one. Again, if you skip this step, the project won’t come out as you’d hoped. After you’ve rolled the soil, take another look at the area to see if it is nice and smooth and has the proper contour. If not, rake and roll the area until you’re satis-fi ed. You’ll be looking at the results for many years so take the time now to get it right.

Once you’re satisfi ed, lightly rough up the surface of the soil with your metal rake. Finally it’s time to broadcast the seed. Consult the folks at your local garden center to determine the best grass blend for your particular soil and light conditions. For late–summer seeding, avoid cheap blends that contain annual ryegrass. Broadcast the seed evenly over the area at the recommended rate. Then roll the seed with the water-fi lled roller to press it into good contact with the soil. If it is a large area, you’ll want to cover it with straw. A smaller area can be covered with burlap or horticultural fabric. The reason you cover the seed is to help keep the sun and wind from drying it out while it’s germinating.

After all this is done, you can start watering and watering and watering. This is the tricki-est and most important part of the project. No matter how high the quality of the seed used, it won’t germinate unless the area is kept moist CONSTANTLY. It can’t be allowed to dry out, even for an hour. IF THE AREA DRIES COMPLETELY, THE SEED DIES AND CAN’T RESTART. Premium blends of fescue and bluegrass will take 2 weeks just to sprout so be diligent about watering and be patient. If you use a blend that has perennial ryegrass in addition to bluegrass and fescue, be aware that the ryegrass will sprout a week or more earlier. Even after the ryegrass sprouts, continue watering as if nothing has hap-pened to ensure the germination of the desirable fescue and bluegrass seeds.

After the young grass is up, apply a slow release winter or starter type of lawn food to stim-ulate quick root growth. Look for a starter food with a higher middle number (phosphorus). When the grass fi nally grows to 4”, mow off an inch (and no more) to promote even more root growth. In spring, apply another shot of the starter lawn food to insure that the young grass develops a mature root system before summer heats up. Thanks for the read.

A wedding is a joyous event that couples want to share with as many people as possible. Cou-ples commonly ask family and friends to take part in the ceremony as ushers, bridesmaids or readers. Before enlisting the help of a child to fi ll such roles, couples should carefully consider whether a youngster is capable of participating in the wedding ceremony or if he or she may not be up to the task.

Millions of people tuned into the British Royal wedding in April. Among the participants were six young children. The Hon. Margarita Armstrong-Jones, Miss Eliza Lopes, Miss Grace van Cutsem, Lady Louise Windsor, Master Tom Pettifer, and Master William Lowther-Pinkerton were bridesmaids and pages in attendance. The children were as young as three years old and as old as 10. Although the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were confi dent enough in the kids’ maturity to include them, reportedly some measures were taken to keep the tots in line. For instance, Prince Henry report-edly delighted lit- tle Eliza Lopes with a pink “wig- gly worm” so she wouldn’t be frightened by the crowds. Said wiggly worm actually made it into the of-fi cial group bridal photo, being clutched by Miss Lopes.

Couples worrying about all the lit-tle details of their own weddings may not want to fret about kiddie meltdowns or the bloopers that can occur when kids act like kids. Each child’s personal maturity level should be considered before enlisting their help. There are some other strategies to use as well.

* Young children serving as fl ower girls or ring bearers should be able to walk down the aisle without coaxing. If they cannot handle this task, then they should not be asked to take part in the wedding.

* Should children prove competent to walk down the aisle unattended, couples can have them then make their way to the seats next to their parents, rather than awkwardly standing with the rest of the bridal party for the ceremony.

* An minimum age requirement for wedding participants might be a good idea. A child age 5 or up may be able to appreciate the importance of the event.

* Consult with the pastor or offi ciant of the ceremony. The ceremony location may have rules governing children in the ceremony.

* All people who have participated in the ceremony will be invited to the reception. If couples decide to have a kids-free party, then reconsider children in the ceremony.

* Think about another role for a young child that will not disrupt the proceedings. Perhaps he or she can help hand out birdseed or small bottles of bubbles to use when the couple has fi nished their vows. Or give children disposable cameras and allow them to capture a kids’-eye view of the wedding.

Couples who choose to have children participate in the ceremony have to realize that there is the potential for slip-ups. Keeping an open mind and some patience can make for some memo-rable moments and a little humor as well.

Children in a wedding means no kidding around

Not all couples are in love with the idea of being the center of attention on their wedding day. Some couples are simply uncom-fortable in front of crowds both big and small. However, such couples who are about to walk down the aisle might want to

Did you know?take a cue from Prince William and his now princess bride, Catherine Middleton. In what many called the social event of the year and some called the most talked about wedding since Prince William’s late mother, Diana, walked down the aisle roughly 30 years earlier,

the prince and his bride stayed cool under pressure despite the knowl-edge that their wedding was being broadcast all over the world. The Nielsen Co., which monitors televi-sion viewer habits across the globe, reported that, in America alone, 22.76 million viewers watched the ceremony as it was taking place between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 29. That viewing was spread across 11 different networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, BBC America, and E! Entertainment. But broad-cast networks were not the only ones to reap the rewards of what came to be known as the Royal Wedding. E! Online reported its 23.6 million page views the Friday of the wedding was the most the site had ever garnered, while ABC-News.com, no stranger to big news stories itself, saw its online traffi c reach its highest point since the 2008 presidential election.

It’s no longer necessary to stick with a white cake with buttercream frosting for your wedding day. Think about exploring other fl avor and fi lling combinations that will tempt the guests’ taste buds. For those who can’t settle on just one fl avor, how about having a different fl avor for each layer?

Couples getting married in the fall may want to think about a spice cake that evokes the feelings of sip-ping a mug of spiced cider. Cream cheese frosting is often a pairing with spice cake, or think about a layer of caramel that will make it taste like you’re enjoying a candied Halloween apple.

A hummingbird cake may fi t the bill for a spring wedding. This is made with mashed bananas, pineapples and chopped pecans. This cake is perfect when paired with cream cheese frosting.

Yellow or white cake are universal favorites for wed-dings. Some pizzazz can be added through the use of creative fi llings. Consider something citrusy and sum-mery for a summer wedding. Raspberry preserves or lem-on curd are tart and sweet. For a tropical fl air, mangoes or passion fruit can be mixed with touches of coconut.

A winter wedding can be ac-cented with rich fl avors, like a decadent chocolate cake filled with chocolate ga-

nache and black cherries -- in a black forest style. Those toasting to the good life may want an almond cake enhanced with some fi ne li-queur and simple chocolate buttercream.

Couples should sit down with their baker and sample a number of fl avor combina-tions to determine a recipe that works for them.

Pastry companies also may be able to develop a cake that encompasses a couple’s favorite fl avors or symboliz-es a special moment in their lives. A Boston Cream Pie-inspired cake may liven up the wedding of a couple who became engaged in Boston. Maybe a cannoli cream fi lled cake will usher in memories of a trip to Italy. Kids at heart can enjoy candy confec-

tion cakes fi lled with gooey chocolate, nuts and marsh-mallows.

Whatever the case, couples can use their cake as a cen-terpiece that wows the sens-es of taste as well as vision. Consider displaying this cu-linary masterpiece on a table with the seating cards placed around it so that it can be en-joyed the entire night.
