WONDERFUL HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL ANIMALS
CAPITAL DISTRICT – Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving ani-mals of all kinds throughout the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month.
FRIDAY FAMILY LUNCHESSCOTIA – Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 103 South Reynolds Street in Scotia will be celebrating summer with Friday Family Lunches, open to the community from 11:30 to 12:30 every Friday until August 28. Open to everyone, the lunches served will be a simple sandwich lunch with fruit and veggies, drink, and dessert. At the lunch there will be an opportunity to help other people, also. A special table will be set aside with fabric to be cut into squares to be made into small quilts for City Mission, Birthright, and nursing homes. Come for the food, stay for the fellowship.
BALLSTON LAKE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION (BLIA) ELECTS OFFICERS/ BOARD

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE” CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District re-gion and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate pass-ing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reunit-ing and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a bar-beque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Satur-day night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]
ANNUAL ICE CREAM SOCIALVISCHER FERRY – Annual Summer Ice Cream Social to be held on Wednesday, July 22, from 6-8pm at Amity Re-formed Church, 335 Riverview Road, Vischer Ferry. The feature of this event is the Esperance Band who will play and entertain for the evening. You may call 371-2838 for more information.
VOLUNTEERS HELP YOU STAY IN YOUR HOMESO. SARATOG COUNTY – Is it getting more difficult to manage living in your home? You might appreciate a volunteer to give you support like Bessie has been receiving from Care Links Pro-gram volunteers. June helps Bessie by shopping for her grocer-ies because she can’t get out to buy for herself anymore. Walk-ing is too difficult. If you could use some assistance, Care Links of Southern Saratoga County offers free services to 60+ seniors. Friendly visiting, respite, “handy helping”, housekeeping, are ways you can benefit from services. Call 399-3262 to find out how a dependable caring person can make your life easier.
CIRCUS SMIRKUS COMES TO SARATOGASARATOGA – Circus Smirkus comes to Saratoga for four per-formances, July 5th and 6th at 1pm and 7pm under the Big Top Tent at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway on Nelson Avenue. 2015 SARATOGA COUNTY FAIR - ART AND SCIENCE PROJECTS FOR EDUCATION EXHIBITS
SARATOGA COUNTY – The 174th Saratoga County Fair in-vites Saratoga County Schools each year to display their art, science and social exhibits at the fair from July 21-26, 2015. Students also enter projects on their own. Three School Dis-tricts with the best displays win awards of a first prize TV & DVD combination, second and third prizes one TV and one DVD; four outstanding student entries receive a cash prize. There are ten honorable mentions for art and ten honorable mentions for Social/Science, which will also receive awards. Everyone will receive a ribbon. Categories are: Art, Social Studies/Science, Photography, Graphic Arts & Group Projects. For judging purposes, there will be two age groups; grades K-6 and grades 7-12. Sue Leahey, Kim Leahey & Joan Joyner, Education Superintendents, believe that the young citizens of Saratoga County are an important part of the community and should have the opportunity to share their school proj-ects with the many thousands of people attending the fair. This year, Education will have “craft time” every day at 5pm so come and join the fun. Set up date for the education exhibits is Thursday, July 16, from 10am to 2pm at the Saratoga Fair Grounds under the Grandstand. Entries for this department will be accepted on this day only. This is a great time of year for gardeners. In spite of the sluggish start, recent warmth has our gardens leaping to life . There are home grown flowers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial flowers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual flowers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the flowerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the. All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. Later, this show will include althea, The Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double flowering, I greatly admire the single flowering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single flowering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on. Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump. If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have
an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who
Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.
