Saturday:

Get ready for the thrill of a lifetime

as you tackle the trails of the Black

Mountain Off-Road Adventure

Area through the Putney Trailhead.

Here you’ll experience elevations up

to 3300 feet and over 150 miles of

exciting terrain! Make sure you

pack a lunch! In the evening, you

can take advantage of the trailheads

amenities by reserving a Kayak and

explore the headwaters of the

If you don’t want to get wet, try ex-

ploring Portal 31 (606) 848-1530,

which offers visitors the unique ex-

perience of touring an actual coal

SUNDAY:

On the last day of your adventure, you will get to experience the thrill of the

Black Mountain Thunder Zipline (606) 837-3205. With 11 lines, up to 500

feet high, 2 miles of cable, and about 60 miles per hour, Black Mountain Thun-

der Zipline is Ken-

tucky’s newest, high-

est, and fastest zipline!

The canopy tour of the

mountains will take at

least two hours so by

the time you are ready

to conclude your ad-

take a trip back in time to Pine Moun-

of education and service since 1913. In

the evening, travel to Hensley Settle-

ment (606) 248-2817. Here you can

explore a truly rural Appalachian settle-

ment that was self-sufficient from 1903

-1951 without electricity, roads, or

modern conventions. Next, head to the

historic Benham Schoolhouse Inn 1-

clude your night.

unique experience with Portal 31

Here you will tour an actual coal

mine by rail car where animated

exhibits will take you back in

time! Then your trip back in time

will continue by visiting the KY

Coal Museum (606) 848-1530.

You can visit a coal miners work-

place, his home, and his community by visiting the Museum. Don’t forget to

visit the Mock Underground Mine and Loretta Lynn Exhibit while you are in

the museum! Before you leave town, make sure you stop by The Miner’s

NATURE weekend

ARRIVAL (Friday):

Welcome to beautiful, mountain-

Your nature weekend begins by

arriving at Martins Fork Lake

(606) 573-7655 and pitching your

tents at the primitive camping ar-

eas! Before using one of the grills

to prepare dinner, make sure you

take a short trip on the Cumber-

land Shadow Trail or visit

Quadrule Falls.

You can also take a night time

swim in the lake or fish!

Saturday:

The next morning, head to Kingdom

Come State Park (606) 589-2479

and experience the 14 hiking trails

& 4 mountaintop overlooks that

the park offers. You can also visit

Log Rock, a natural sandstone

bridge, and Raven Rock, a giant

rock exposure that soars 290 feet

into the air! There are plenty of pic-

nic spots for a packed lunch. Then

head to Pine Mountain Settlement

School (606) 558-3571 to experi-

ence the nature & wildlife that

makes Harlan unique. By calling

ahead, you can arrange lodging for

the night and participate in educa-

tional programs concerning the

wildlife or nature, Night Hikes, Ori-

enteer, and visit Split Rock! Take

dinner with you and eat underneath

the stars!

SUNDAY:

On the last day of your nature weekend, you will head to Blanton Forest State

Nature Preserve (502) 573-2886

which is Kentucky’s largest and most

diverse old-growth forest. There are

over 400 different species of plants

and there are hiking trails that lead to

Knobby Rock which overlooks the

forest canopy and Watts Creek Trail.

There are plenty of shelters and areas

for you and your group to have a

packed lunch! You won’t have time to

experience every trail, overlook, state park, lake, etc on a weekend trip, so we

hope to have you back next time so you can see all that unique Harlan has to offer!

Welcome to Harlan, KY where our

majestic mountains thrust toward the

open skies. Harlan is the setting for

the FX series Justified. Upon arrival

in Harlan, make sure you stop by the

Harlan Center (606) 573-4495 and

see some props from the set of Justi-

fied. Make sure you ask about a

photo-op on Ivy Hill that plays in the

opening credits of Justified! You can

also get information about the county,

city, and attractions that Harlan has to

offer. Then head to The Mount Aire

Motel (606) 573-4660 to check in.

After settling in, prepare yourself for

a one-of-a-kind country meal pre-

pared at Ken and Paul's Family

Steakhouse and Pizza (606) 573-

7776 where Raylan himself would

have to loosen a belt notch or two.

Saturday:

It’s time to get the real “Justified,” ex-

perience in Harlan, KY. To start your

day make arrangements at the Putney

Campgrounds (606) 573-9009 to

kayak on the Cumberland River. The

Cumberland River Band is named af-

ter this waterway and they have songs

featured in Justified. After having

lunch at one of our local restaurants,

head to The Harlan Country Club

(606) 573-2510 where you can see the

clubs grounds and play a round of

golf. The Sandy Beach Country Club

is based on this club and golf course.

Next, travel to downtown Harlan

where you can take a self-guided

walking tour of the place that inspired

the show Justified. Be sure to stop by

the Harlan County Coal Miners Me-

morial Monument!

SUNDAY:

One of the major elements in the series Justified

is the coal industry. On the last day of your Jus-

tified weekend, be sure to visit the Kentucky

Coal Mining Museum (606) 848-1530 where

you can see the coal miners legacy from his

home, to his work, and his community. The mu-

seum also offers the Loretta Lynn Museum and

a mock Underground Mine (Portal 32). Don’t

forget to make reservations for Portal 31 (606)

848-1530 where animated exhibits show you

how coal miners worked underground from the

early 1900’s to the present. When you and your

group decide to conclude your weekend, make

sure you stop by The Miner’s Diner in Totz

(606) 573-6611 for a delicious meal! Don’t for-
