TRIB May 26, 2020 & June 2, 2020) LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: My husband and I recent- ly returned to Shelby Coun- try from our winter home in Grenada, West Indies. Like the rest of the world, Gre- nada is grappling with CO- VID-19, and I thought you might find it interesting to compare and contrast our two homes - Shelby County and Grenada. Grenada is a tri-island na- tion of about 120,000 people in 150 square miles, with a population density of 825 people per square mile. Shelby County has a population of about 12,000 people in 591 square miles, with a population density of 20 people per square mile. As of May 26, Grenada has had 23 COVID-19 cases. Shelby County has had 31 COVID-19 cases. Grenada’s population has all the factors associated with increased risk of con- tacting the coronavirus - the majority of the population is people of color, it is a low income nation, people live in multi-generational homes, and rely on public transpor- tation. Shelby County is predom- inantly Caucasian, middle income, single family homes and car owners. Grenada is pursuing ag- gressive testing, rigorous contact tracing, and isola- tion protocols. In addition, anyone in public is required to wear a mask. We know that it is easier to isolate an island than a county, but it still boggles the mind that a country with 10 times the population of Shelby County, squeezed into 1/4 the space, and with the risk factors above, has fewer cases of COVID-19. We hope you find this in- teresting. Hope O’Hara and Steven Studer, Irwin Grenada vs. Shelby County comparison HARLAN St. Mi- chael’s Catholic Church in Harlan will resume daily Masses (not weekend) on Wednesday, June 3. Follow- ing are the guidelines: If you are over 60, you are strongly discouraged from attending Mass, as this age group is the most vul- nerable. Everyone will be re- quired to wear masks. Please wear a mask from the moment you enter the church until after you leave the church. If you do not have a mask please get one before Masses resume. Please wash your hands before coming to church. There will be sani- tizer at the church entrance for everyone to sanitize when they arrive. Entering and exiting will be restricted to the main entrance on the east side of church. The south door will remain locked. Holy Water fonts will remain empty. We ask that social dis- tancing of six feet between family groups be practiced. Seating will only be al- lowed in every other pew. (Pews have been marked off that are open and closed.) With these strict guide- lines, please be aware that the seating capacity will be greatly restricted. Our max- imum capacity will be only 85-125 per Mass. We will not have an of- fertory basket passed. There will be a single basket for tithes at the main entrance. Please drop your envelope into the basket when you ar- rive or leave. The communion lines will be reduced to a single file line in the center aisle with six feet of separation between people. The side aisles will also have single file lines. The Precious Blood will not be offered and you are asked to receive the host in the hand, not on the tongue. Holy Communion must be consumed from the Com- munion Minister and may not be taken back to the pew or taken home to another person. The Diocese provided the following guidelines for receiving communion: -- Wear your mask as you approach for Holy Com- munion -- Bow -- Place your hands out in the usual manner and re- ceive the Eucharist -- After responding “Amen,” step to the side -- Lower your mask, place the Eucharist in your mouth, and pull the mask back up -- Return to your seat Daily Mass times will not change. The church will only be open for Masses, af- ter Mass the church will be locked. St. Michael’s resuming daily Masses beginning June 3 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: I want to thank the Har- lan Newspapers for publish- ing the opinions of Shelby County. I am Bernard Lapke, born in 1931, 88 yrs old, and a retired Shelby Co. farmer. I have spent my life here on this farm with the exception of two years in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. I lived on the farm dur- ing the 1930s and depression, some at a very young age. I can remember driving to Dunlap and asking my Dad why so many farms had the big pink signs on the gate- way or mail box. I was told that the farmers could not pay their mortgages and the credit people foreclosed and repossessed the land. I prob- ably didn’t fully understand all this, but I did know that losing the land and terrible drought made everyone very poor and times were hard. I remembered something called New Deal being talked about. Some of it was criti- cized like killing little pigs, sealing corn, and working for the W.P.A. Some people called it welfare, most of us called it a chance to survive. The checks were small, but enough for groceries and fuel, and they had to work to receive them. Most of my memories are related to agriculture and the things that helped most. The Federal Land Bank or Farm Credit (?) made money available to farmers to bor- row and own their land. My understanding was that the loan companies or credi- tors were encouraged to sell the land back to the farm- ers who had been renting it from them. A friend of mine told me that “the success story of American agricul- ture is the people who work the land; own the land”. He was educated, widely read and successful, and I have al- ways remembered. The next great thing that happened was the Rural Electric Coop movement. One of the great- est thing for agriculture was electricity for the farmers. It was good for living and it was good for production. The next good thing was creating the Extension Service which dealt in education involving agriculture, and from this came 4H, FFA, Land Grant Colleges, etc. and the Soil Conservation Service, which was so important to teach water control, conservation practices to save the soil and introduce desirable plants and grasses. All this is so im- portant to western Iowa. I know that the New Deal was called Socialistic by some but all these pro- grams were for the good of the country and the people. Many of the programs bor- row from the government and later were able to repay the loans. I don’t believe in Socialism or Communism but I do believe in America and the constitution, and al- ways admire the young men who put it together. I am nei- ther Socialist, or avid con- servative. I am an American and support the good, and freedom of America. Bernard Lapke, Dunlap I am an American DOW CITY -- A morning Memorial Day service featuring a gun salute were held at the Dow City Cemetery on May 25 hosted by the Dow City American Legion Post #444 members and guests. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:I want to thank the Har-

lan Newspapers for publish-ing the opinions of Shelby County. I am Bernard Lapke, born in 1931, 88 yrs old, and a retired Shelby Co. farmer. I have spent my life here on this farm with the exception of two years in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War.

I lived on the farm dur-ing the 1930s and depression, some at a very young age. I can remember driving to Dunlap and asking my Dad why so many farms had the big pink signs on the gate-way or mail box. I was told that the farmers could not pay their mortgages and the credit people foreclosed and repossessed the land. I prob-ably didn’t fully understand all this, but I did know that losing the land and terrible drought made everyone very poor and times were hard. I remembered something called New Deal being talked about. Some of it was criti-cized like killing little pigs, sealing corn, and working for the W.P.A. Some people called it welfare, most of us called it a chance to survive. The checks were small, but enough for groceries and fuel, and they had to work to receive them.

Most of my memories are related to agriculture and the things that helped most. The Federal Land Bank or Farm Credit (?) made money available to farmers to bor-row and own their land. My understanding was that the loan companies or credi-tors were encouraged to sell the land back to the farm-ers who had been renting it from them. A friend of mine told me that “the success

story of American agricul-ture is the people who work the land; own the land”. He was educated, widely read and successful, and I have al-ways remembered. The next great thing that happened was the Rural Electric Coop movement. One of the great-est thing for agriculture was electricity for the farmers. All this is so im-portant to western Iowa.

I know that the New Deal was called Socialistic by some but all these pro-grams were for the good of the country and the people. Many of the programs bor-row from the government and later were able to repay the loans. I don’t believe in Socialism or Communism but I do believe in America and the constitution, and al-ways admire the young men who put it together. I am nei-ther Socialist, or avid con-servative. I am an American and support the good, and freedom of America.
