PARISH NEWS & LITURGICAL

FROM THE LIPS OF THE SAINTSBy: Seminarian Roberto Villablanca

Pope St. John Paul II said, “the Christian life involves detachment from superfluous goods, and the acceptance of a poverty which sets us free.” The disordered attachment to material goods blurs our vision of God and our neighbor. It makes us insensitive to the needs of other people. Attachment to material goods puts all our hope into this passing world. We are therefore called to live a spirit of detachment or poverty. This virtue does not mean despising all our material resources. Instead, the virtue of detachment leads us to view material goods as what they truly are: means to glorify God, sanctify others and ourselves. Detachment gives us a clear vision of God and neighbor. Thus, it helps us to be free and love others genuinely.

5PARISH NEWS & LITURGICAL

VOCATIONSWhat can we do to help promote more vocations in the church? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) recommends every catholic in the United States to do these 5 things to promote vocations.

1. Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Jesus says in Matthew 9:38 “to beg the master of the harvest to send laborers into the vineyard.” If we want more priests, sisters and brothers, we all need to ask.

2. Teach young people how to pray. Pope Benedict XVI said that unless we teach our youth how to pray, they will never hear God calling them into a deeper relationship with Him and into the discipleship of the Church.

3. Invite active young adults and teens to consider a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life. A simple, sincere comment should not be underestimated. An easy way to do this can be remembered by four letters: ICNU. “John, I see in you (ICNU) the qualities that would make a good priest, and I want to encourage you to pray about it.” It is a non-invasive way to encourage openness to a religious vocation.

4. Make it attractive. Show the priesthood for what it truly is – a call to be a spiritual father to the whole family of faith. Similarly, the consecrated life for a young woman is a call to be united to Christ in a unique way, and to be a spiritual mother to those she encounters in her life and service. The challenge for priests and religious is to be joyful models of their vocations.

5. Preach it, brother! Vocations must be talked about regularly if a “vocation culture” is to take root in parishes and homes. This means, first and foremost, the people need to hear about vocations from priests through homilies, prayers of the faithful, and discussions in the classroom. Vocations kept out of sight are out of mind.

Lenten regulations for fasting and abstinenceAsh Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and obligatory abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Roman Catholic Church the norms on fasting are obligatory for ages 18-59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members from age 14.

What is Lent?Lent is our time of preparation. A 40-day journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent is a journey that spans Ash Wednesday through Holy Week culminating in the great celebration of Easter. As Catholics, the spiritual pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving guide us in daily reflection on our own lives as we strive to deepen our relationship with God.

What should I give up for Lent?Catechism invites Catholics to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. In addition to Meatless Fridays, Catholics are also invited to offer daily sacrifices. By giving up little things−coffee, sweets, and more, we leave room for God to act in our lives in new ways.

Holy WeekPalm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, one of the most significant moments of the Church year. During this week, we journey with Christ from his triumphant entry into Jerusalem to his final meal with his closest friends, and ultimately to his death on the cross. As we walk with Jesus through Holy Week, we call to mind the countless men, women and children who even today carry heavy crosses of hunger, of homelessness, of lack of resources or security. In these brothers and sisters, we encounter Christ. Christ who continues to walk that long road to Calvary.

Stations of the CrossJourney with Jesus to Calvary with the Catholic social teaching inspired by the Stations of the Cross. There is also a Lenten retreat available, “Companions on the Journey.”

Questions and answers about Lent and Lenten practices

From usccb.org

Q. Why do we say that there are 40 days of Lent? When you count all the days from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, there are 46.

A. It might be more accurate to say there is the “40-day fast within Lent.” Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present configuration of 46 days. The 40-day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.

Q. So does that mean that when we give something up for Lent such as candy, we can have it on Sundays?

A. Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and the days of abstinence every Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally chosen additional penitential practices as disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e.., kept on Sunday as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated in the Church but by individual conscience.

Q. I understand that Catholic ages 18-59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday but what exactly are the rules for fasting?

A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times, if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time but no solid food should be consumed between meals.

Q. Are there exemptions, other than for age, from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?

A. Those that are excused from fast abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill, including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded, are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.
