America Is In the Heart by Carlos Bulosan– Book Review by Maritza Mesa Zamora

America is in the Heart is a social classic about the life experience of a Filipino immigrant named Carlos Bulosan.

Carlos lives in the Philippines while his family is in the need of money. He hears about the great American Dream and starts to

work to raise money to go to America. Once he gets his money he sets off to fulfill this dream where he will be able to help out

his family. He soon finds out that the legendary promises of America are hard to accomplish. None the less he does not give up.

Carlos keeps trying to keep his hope up even though he goes through the worst’s things any immigrant can go through.


This book opened up many emotional feelings about immigrants. It showed and proved that it does not matter what

color of skin you are. If you are not a native the America it is hard for you to work. People look down upon you. They look at

you as if you are the lowest of people trying to take away the jobs of the Americans when it is the Americans themselves that

won’t do the dirty jobs. Many immigrants are willing to work the dirtiest and the lowest paying jobs just to have any amount of

income because it is much more than they had when they were back in their native lands. Carlos states, “I know deep in my

heart that I am an exile in America … I feel like a criminal running from a crime I did not commit and this crime is that I am a

Filipino in California.” He learned how corrupt the American society can be. He learns the hard way that it is not easy but he

does not lose hope. He feels that if there is hope he can still achieve that great life America promises but the time he migrates to

America is during the Great Depression.

The Great Depression was a tough situation that America was in. It was a chain reaction that affected everyone equally.

Because of this, I feel that many immigrants got targeted even more. Many Americans relieved their stress on other people

regardless who and how they hurt them because jobs were even harder to find.

A woman in the beginning of the book was raped countless times because she was among the many lonely men

migrating to America. Carlos tried to help her but to no avail did he accomplish that. A man knocked him out and all Carlos

heard was the cries of the woman. Many women who migrate to new countries are prone to get raped or killed by the men they

are with. It is very dangerous for woman to go alone. But the woman wanted a better life so she had no choice.

Throughout the book Carlos reacquaints himself with his brothers. He notices that they change significantly. They are

not the same kind hearted brothers he once knew. They were corrupted by society. They did bad things to get money. They told

Carlos that it is very difficult to live in America and that he would one day learn why it was so tough. Carlos did. He

experienced discrimination everywhere he went. He saw how badly the cops treated the immigrants. If a person could not go to

the cops for protection then who could they turn to? No one they had to fight for themselves which just tainted the names of the

people fighting. This is what happened in the book. Immigrants got bad reputations and they were all judged equally. It did not

matter that you were the nicer one of the immigrants what mattered was that you looked like you did not belong and they would

treat you as bad as they could.

Carlos wrote this book in hopes that it would open up the eyes of the people. That they would take a stand a defend one

another from the corrupt ways of society. This book has opened many eyes and hearts. It is a heartfelt book about the struggle of

immigrants in America. They pursue America no matter how hard it is to accomplish because it is better than what they had

back home. Carlos starts movements to better the immigrants. It takes time and patience to make society better but each day

they fought for their cause was one day closer to being free and treated as an equal. People need to stand together and defend

one another and not be afraid to speak their minds when they see something unjust going on. This is what Carlos proposed and

hopes to accomplish.

The book was a very good book. It changes the way you think. As you read the book you feel every turmoil Carlos

went through. You feel every bit of emotion he did. All the anger, the sadness and the helplessness he sometimes felt. Yet what

made Carlos so great was that he tried not to lose hope. He came to America to have a better life and that is what he was going


to do no matter how long or how tough it would be. Carlos is a person to look up to as well as many of the other activist leaders

that did not end up with a black heart with all the prejudice and discrimination they faced.
