The Kirksville Tigers football teammay be 1-2 on the season, but when itcomes to speed on the edges and break-away speed in the receiving game theTigers may be one of the best in the area. After a 33-6 loss in the season opener

against Macon and a 38-28 setback inWeek 2 against the Chillicothe Hornets, the Tigers finally got their first taste ofvictory last night while rallying in thefinal four minutes of the game againstthe Monroe City Panthers for a 18-7 vic-tory.Of course the Boonville Pirates football

team found success in Week 2 against theFulton Hornets 40-3 and then recordedits first shutout of the season last weekagainst the Marshall Owls by a score of41-0. The only blemish in what would bea perfect season otherwise came in theseason opener against the Pleasant HillRoosters in which Boonville out-gainedthe Roosters 330-248 but also had fivefumbles, losing three, in a 27-16 loss.Boonville Pirates football coach Devin

Brown said there were so many penaltiesand drive killers last week against Mar-shall and it just killed momentum.“In the second half I thought we were

able to come out play and get after it a lit-tle bit,” Brown said, “but penalties havebeen the big thing the first-three games. We just have to clean it up.”The Pirates will also see speed for the

first time this season. Although MonroeCity out-gained Kirksville last week 258-197, Kirksville coach Chris Daniels saidhis team had three dropped balls fortouchdowns and had two 60-plus yardruns that were called back due to penal-ties. As for Monroe City’s only touchdown

of the game, Daniels said the Panthersscored on a big play by getting behind thesecondary all the way down to the redzone and then punching it in. “We scoredfirst on a 75-yard run by Dollins in thefirst quarter and then they came backwith a 16-yard run in the second quarterto lead 7-6 at the half,” Daniels said.“Then, in the fourth quarter, we scored

twice on a 35-yard pass fromKriegshauser to Hutton and a 3-yard runby Osborn.”The Panthers also picked up nine first

downs in the game compared to just fivefor the Tigers and were 3 of 8 passingwith two picks. Kirksville, meanwhile, completed only 1 of 7 passes for 35 yards.Senior running back Harrison Dollins

also led the rushing attack for Kirksvillewith 14 carries for 100 yards. No otherplayer for the Tigers had more than 21yards on the ground. As far as receiving yards, senior Jacob

Hutton caught the Tigers only pass for 35yards.Daniels said so far this season the

Tigers have been hot and cold defen-sively. “We are kind of riding a roller coaster a

little on offense and part of that is due toinjuries,” Daniels said. “However Ithought we handled adversity pretty welllast week. Our quarterback was out withan ankle sprain and our backup quarter-back came in and handled some lowsnaps and got things running on offenseand did ok offensively. Defensively, I

thought we played a very solid footballgame last week. Had we moved the ball alittle more on offense, we might not havelet them score at all. But my hat goes offto Monroe City, they played their gameplan well and crowded the box to takeaway the run and were pretty successfulat it.”Despite giving up over 250 yards in

total offense last week, Daniels had to bepleased with the play of junior defensivetackle Joshua Tooley, who led the team intackles last week with 11. Junior line-backer Chris Tenpenny also finished thegame in double digit with 10 tackles.Coach Brown said defensively the

Tigers are pretty good. He said they havea linebacker that’s really good along withsome team speed.“They run four and five-man fronts

and their defensive line is big, thick andactive up front so we have to be able tosecure our blocking assignments,” Brownsaid. “As for their offense, they have twoguys who are really explosive at receiverand running back, which is somethingthey haven’t had before. They also like torun the wildcat, which is obviously dan-

gerous from a coaching perspective be-cause it’s something that we will have toaddress. The key offensively for us isturnovers and penalties but that’s some-thing that we have been working on forthe last-two weeks. Defensively, we haveto keep No. 25 (Harrison Dollins) in-check because he is a big play maker. Wealso have to be able to tackle him and getto the ball.”Coach Daniels said when you look at

Boonville’s offense the player wearingNo. 15 is a pretty outstanding athlete.“We are just trying to hope we stop the

quarterback keeper,” Daniels said. “Wehave to play assignment football. Any-time you see an option team, you have toplay assignment football.”Daniels said he also likes what he has

seen of Boonville’s defense thus far. Hesaid it’s a very stingy defense. “Boonvilledoes some nice things out of the 4-4 andthey really crowd the box and make youhave to throw the ball, so we are going tohave to put the ball in the air if we wantto be successful against those guys.”

Despite being 1-2 on the season,Daniels said he also likes where his teamis at at this juncture of the season. “We opened with the No. 1 team in

Class 2 and then we played a Chillicotheprogram which everybody knows they area solid program,” Daniels said. “You haveto play your two best games to come outwith a win against those teams, but we areproud of the way our kids have played andthe way they have handled adversity. Theyhave showed a lot of heart and desire thein those first-two games. They are com-petitors which I think is evident from lastweek’s game as we came back and won inthe last four minutes. They are not goingto quit and they are going to play for fourquarters so because of that we are excitedabout our chances this season.”Daniels also likes the matchup against

Boonville. He said although it’s a big chal-lenge because Boonville is using to win-ning, the outcome will depend on howwell the Tigers come out to play.“If we come out and play well, it’s going

to be a close football game, but if we havea lapse for any amount of time or we arenot ready to play it could get out of handquick,” Daniels said. “I thought we cameout and played well against a Macon foot-ball team which is a pretty dangerous of-fensive team and then we had a little bitof a letdown against Chillicothe in thefirst quarter, but other than that the de-fense has played very, very well.”The Pirates have also played well de-

fensively in their first-three games whilegiving up a total of 448 yards for an aver-age of 149.3 yards per game. Opponentsare also scoring only 10 points on averagein three games against Boonville’s de-fense.As for the offense, the Pirates have

outscored their opponents 97-30 this sea-son and have rushed for 1,016 yards andpassed for another 135 for a total of 1,151yards for an average of 383.7 yards pergame. Boonville has also been stingywhen it comes to giving up first downs.Through three games, the Pirates haveyielded only 17 first downs while pickingup 54 first downs of their own. However if the Pirates have had one

downfall thus far this season, well maybetwo, its turnovers and penalties. In threegames, Boonville has lost five fumbles andhas been flagged 29 times for 212 yardsfor an average of 71 yards per game. Op-

ponents, meanwhile, have drew the yel-low cloth only 16 times for 132 yards foran average of 44 yards in penalties pergame.Of course last week’s game against the

Marshall Owls was a flagfest, as bothteams combined for 19 penalties and 165yards.That’s the bad news. The good news is

that Boonville led Marshall 16-0 at theend of the first quarter and then tacked ontwo more scores in each of the third andfourth quarter to warrant a running clockfor the second week in a row. Also in that game, senior quarterback

Wes Davis picked up 156 yards on 18 car-ries while scoring four touchdowns andcompleted 3 of 5 passes for 33 yards.Davis also spread the wealth around byhitting three different receivers, connect-ing with junior tight end Jay Barnhart ona pass for 12 yards. Senior Aron Widel hadone reception for 11 yards while seniorHolden Hinkle hauled in one pass for 10yards.

Barnhart also emerged with his best de-fensive effort of the season to lead the Pi-rates with 12 tackles. Along with his fivesolo stops on the night, Barnhart also hadfour assisted tackles, five tackles forlosses, three sacks, one forced fumble andone safety.Junior linebacker Jalen Poindexter and

Wes Davis finished the game with ninetackles each. Poindexter had three solostops, six assisted tackles and one fumblerecovery, while Davis added six solo stops, three assisted tackles, one tackle for a lossand one fumble recovery. After that, Jared Oser and Aron Widel

each had eight tackles while Dyllan Crow-ley finished the game with four, Ty Greenthree, Gus Kemp, Josh Webb, KeithPoindexter, Holden Hinkle, Brett Kenney,Tanner Green and Justin Swope each withtwo and Dakota Meyer and John Watsonwith one tackle apiece.Wes Davis is also the leading rusher

after three games for Boonville with 61carries for 493 yards and seven touch-

downs. Davis has also completed 11 of 28passes on the season for 135 yards and onetouchdown. As for receiving yards, Hinkle is the

leading receiver after three games withfive catches for 66 yards and one touch-down. Jared Oser has three catches for 44yards, followed by Gus Kemp with one for18, Jay Barnhart one for 12 and AronWidel one for 11.On defense, Davis appears to be closing

in on the all-time career tackles record atBoonville High School while needing only66 solo stops. For the season, Davis currently has 29

tackles with 19 solo stops along with sevenassisted tackles, four tackles for losses andtwo fumble recoveries.Jalen Poindexter, however, is close be-

hind with 27 total tackles with 11 solostops, 14 assisted, two tackles for losses, one forced fumble and one fumble recov-ery. Other players with double digit tack-les are Jay Barnhart with 22, Jared Oser20, Dyllan Crowley 17, Aron Widel 15 andTanner Green with 10. Junior Gus Kempcurrently leads the team with two inter-ceptions.

ON OFFENSE...

Turnovers and penalties, thesame thing we have been work-ing on for the last-two weeks.

We have to able to secure ourblocking assignments because

Kirksville is big, thick and active upfront.

ON DEFENSE...

We have to keep No. 25 (Harri-son Dollins) in check because heis a big playmaker.

We have to be able to tackle andget to the football.

Explain what you enjoymost about playingyour sport and ath-letic? I enjoy the “brotherhood”that comes on the footballfield and the pride in rep-resenting Boonville. I alsoenjoy the raw violence.

What is one of yourmemorable momentsas an athlete? My junior Homecomingand running out of the fogtunnel to all of Boonvilleʼs screaming fans.

Tell us about someone who inspires you in sports andwhy? My dad was my biggest influence. He taught me to go hardall the time and to always strive to improve my skills.

What is your favorite position to play in football andwhy?I honestly canʼt decide on a position because the way I seeit, as long as I get to hit somebody Iʼll love where I play. Hon-estly anywhere in the “trenches”! (on the line). If you could play another position what would it be andwhy? Running back on goal line situations because I know I wouldscore everytime and it would be nice to get a touchdown. What does it mean to put on a Boonville Pirate uni-form?Everything to me! It means pride for your town, family andfriends.

Do you have any pre-game preparations?I listen to loud music and think of how my enemy has in-sulted my team and how this is more than a game, it is warfor me.
