UNCLE MO COLT TOPS OBS SESSIONBy Ron Mitchell
For the second time this month pinhooker Cary
Frommer had an Uncle Mo colt bring seven figures
at a Florida 2-year-olds in training sale.
Her Uncle Mo—Setareh colt sold for $1.3 million,
the top first-session price of the Ocala Breeders'
Sales Co.'s March 2-year-olds in training sale.
Mike Repole, who raced champion juvenile male
Uncle Mo, and Coolmore Stud, where the leading
freshman/juvenile sire stands, bought the colt.
"We loved him," said trainer and adviser Todd Pletch-
er. "He breezed phenomenally, was a beautiful horse on
the shank, and showed himself well back at the barn."
The colt, bred by Sierra Farm, had been a $150,000
Keeneland September purchase by Frommer and was
owned by Barry Berkelhammer and Rich Averill.
Today's sale came 13 days after an Uncle Mo colt
she bought for $90,000 was sold at Fasig-Tipton Florida
for $1 million on behalf of herself and Berkelhammer.
The second-best OBS price was a Twirling Candy
colt, bought by Al Shaqab Racing, WinStar Farm, and
China Horse Club for $850,000. Consignor Eisaman
Equine had bought him for $70,000 at Keeneland
September last year. BH

OBS FIRST SESSION ENDS WITH DECLINESBy Ron Mitchell
The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s sale of 2-year-olds
in training got off on a negative note March 15,
with declines in gross, average, and median.
The sales company reported 160 juveniles sold for a
total $25,718,500, compared with $30,704,000 total for
169 sold on day one in 2015. The average fell 11.5% from
$181,680 to $160,741; this year's median for the first day
was $115,000, compared with $120,000 a year ago.
"It was a pretty solid day, and there are still a lot
of good horses out there," said OBS sales director
Tod Wojciechowski. "There was a lot of activity in
the barns today and it wouldn't surprise me to see
bigger prices tomorrow."
With 15 sold for a total $3,797,000, Eddie Woods
was leading consignor, followed by Eisman Equine
with gross receipts of $2,395,000 for seven sold.
The purchase by Mike Repole and Coolmore Stud's
M. V. Magnier of the session topping Uncle Mo colt for
$1.3 million made them the session's leading buyers,
followed by Eddie Plesa, who bought seven for $895,000.
Uncle Mo was the clear leading sire, with six sold for
an average $381,667. Freshman sire Bodemeister fol-
lowed with an average $245,000 paid for five sold. BH

DORMELLITO IS OBS NEWCOMERBy Ron Mitchell
Antonio Francesco made his first foray into the
juvenile sales marketplace March 15-16 with a
half-dozen 2-year-olds consigned under his Dormelli-
to Stud banner.
"This is a business, and if you want to be in it
for the long-term, you have do it yourself and be in
all facets," said Francesco, a Venezuela native who
operates out of the Nelson Jones Training Center in
Florida.
Francesco said he only brought horses with top
sire lines from solid female families, even though
the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s March sale no longer
carries the "select" label.
"Buyers want that residual value, so you have to
have a little bit on the top and the bottom," he said.
Generating the most interest for the Dormellito con-
signment were a New York-bred Frost Giant filly (Hip
532) and an Ohio-bred Into Mischief filly (Hip 338).
"They went neck-to-neck; they love to train,"
Francesco said.
Regardless of how his horses sell, Dormellito
helped sale attendees get their morning jolt, with an
espresso and coffee maker going non-stop. BH

PHILANTHROPIST OFF THE MARK IN SOUTH AFRICABy Sarah Whitelaw
Former Ontario stallion Philanthropist sired his first
South African winner March 13 when his son Good
to Give won at Greyville.
The 2-year-old colt from Philanthropist's first
South African crop made a winning debut at 1,000
meters (about five furlongs) for trainer Charles Laird
and owners Ingrid and Markus Jooste.
He is the third juvenile runner for Philanthropist, who
topped North America's synthetic sires list in 2014.
A son of Kris S., Philanthropist stood at Gardiner
Farms in Ontario before moving to Drakenstein Stud
in South Africa in 2012. He was second on the 2010
Canadian leading first-crop sire list and left his mark
with Sovereign Award winners Pender Harbour and
Phil's Dream. Philanthropist also sired Queen's Plate
runner-up Hippolytus.
Philanthropist, a half brother to recent Tampa Bay
Stakes (gr. IIIT) winner Reload, is out of the Mr. Pros-
pector mare Hidden Reserve, a full sister to grade I
winner Educated Risk and a half sister to champion
Inside Information. His fourth dam is foundation
mare Grey Flight. BH
WHAT A VIEW TOPS WEEK'S SPEED FIGURESBy Frank Angst
Making his graded stakes debut at age 5, What a
View rose to the occasion.
Leading at every call under jockey Kent Desormeaux,
What a View cruised to a 3 3/4-length victory in the
Frank E. Kilroe Mile (gr. IT) March 12 at Santa Anita Park,
earning the week's top Equibase Speed Figure of 118.
Trainer Kenny Black said they needed patience to
address foot issues early in the career of lightly raced
What a View. He's put it together this season, open-
ing 2016 with an easy score against other Cal-breds
in the California Cup Turf Classic before his grade I
breakthrough. Those wins marked Black's first
two stakes victories as a trainer.
Desormeaux believes What a View, the first
grade I winner for sire Vronsky, could have run
faster than the 1:35.57 he needed to complete
the mile on good turf.
"The time is incredible because the turf has
a tremendous amount of give in the ground,"
Desormeaux said. "For him to put that number
up on the clock, he's a real racehorse." BH

CLEVER PEDIGREE PATTERN BEHIND MELATONIN
The weekend revealed a potential new major
player in the U.S. older horse division. At
odds of 16-1, Melatonin led all the way to take
the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) by 4 1/4 lengths
over grade I winners Hard Aces and Effinex. Not
only was the Santa Anita Handicap Melatonin's
first start at 1 1/4 miles, it was only his second
attempt beyond 6 1/2 furlongs (his first resulted
in a win in a 1 1/16-mile
allowance optional
claiming event), and
his previous career
best was a second in
the Eddie D Stakes
(gr. IIIT) over Santa
Anita Park's downhill
turf sprint course
last October.
It's not surprising
that Melatonin was
initially campaigned
as a sprinter. His sire,
Kodiak Kowboy—
from the first crop of
sprinter Posse—was
precocious and speedy, earning Canada's Sover-
eign Award as champion 2-year-old male, and an
Eclipse Award as champion sprinter at 4, when
his victories included the Vosburgh Stakes Carter
Handicap, and Cigar Mile (all gr. I). Retired to Vin-
ery, Kentucky, Kodiak Kowboy moved to WinStar
Farm when Vinery ceased its stallion operation.
In 2014, he was sent to Haras Bage do Sul, Brazil,
for the Southern Hemisphere season, and did
not return.
He's made a useful start, as he was leading
freshman sire by winners in 2013. His first two
crops also include Oklahoma Derby (gr. III) scor-
er Shotgun Kowboy, and Cool Cowboy, success-
ful earlier this year in the Burj Nahaar (UAE-III)
at Meydan.
Melatonin's dam Yanquee Reign is by the
miler Yankee Victor, a son of Saint Ballado. She
won four times and earned minor black-type with
a third in the Claire Marine Stakes at Arlington
Park. His second dam, Quarteira, a minor winner
by Northern Dancer's son Vice Regent, is a sister
to Twice the Vice, a five-time scorer in grade I
company, including the Apple Blossom, Vanity
and Santa Margarita Invitational handicaps.
Melatonin is an object lesson in upgrading
through a clever pedigree pattern. Posse, the sire
of Kodiak Kowboy, is
by a grandson of Vice
Regent out of a mare
by Rahy, a horse
whose dam is U.S.
champion older mare
and Canadian Horse
of the Year Glorious
Song. Melatonin's
dam is by a son of
Saint Ballado—a
brother to Glorious
Song—out of a mare
by Vice Regent.
It's also worth
nothing that the
duplication of Vice
Regent is through his best son, Deputy Minister,
and a sister to his best daughter, and that sibling
combination—Glorious Song and Saint Ballado—
utilizes accomplished runners who were excep-
tional as a broodmare and as a sire. BH

2016 SIRES BY LIFETIME AEIListed below are the top 10 leading sires by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI) through March 14, 2016. Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. All statistics are Northern Hemisphere only. AEI indicates how much purse money the progeny of one sire has earned in relation to the average earnings of all runners in the same years; average earnings of all runners in any year is represented by an index of 1.00. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.
Listed below is a comparison of statistics for only North American racing with all available statistics through March 14, 2016. Only stallions that stand, will stand, or stood in North America (excluding stallions that died or were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season), and have runners in North America are included..
