Sunday Fort Regent

17 Frank Falle, local historian, will explore the Fort Regent complex with you, explaining its unique position in the evolution of Jersey's defensive history. Its choice of location and strategic positioning is at the centre of a newly constructed network of military roads linking a large number of recently built Jersey Round Towers, for the Jersey Militia to guard exit roads off beaches leading to inland destinations. Fort Regent itself was a formidable and complex structure, incorporating the very latest features in fortification design. Standing in the dry moats, facing the multiplicity of guns which would have been aiming directly at you, provides a humbling and hopeless feeling! And then there is "The Well". Twelve sappers, working around the clock for nearly 2 years, finally located fresh water and in doing so entered the record book for one of the deepest wells in Europe!

Meet: 2pm outside the main entrance to Fort RegentWalk: 2 hours. EasyParking: Free at Pier Road

Batterie Lothringen, NoirmontMP-1 Coastal Artillery Observation tower, with its brooding cliff-top presence over the Island's sea approaches is, for many, one of the most potent symbols of the Occupation. The tower was, in fact, known as a 'Marine Peilstand' or 'Naval direction-finding tower', and is one of three constructed in Jersey, out of a planned total of nine.

M-132 Underground command bunker, extending to a depth of 40ft on two floors, this impressive bunker was the Command Post (Leitstand) for the naval coastal artillery battery 'Lothringen' located here. One of four built to a similar design in the Channel Islands, the bunker was surmounted by a range-finder and two periscopes to determine the distance and speed of sea targets.

Paul Burnal, Chairman of the Channel Islands Occupation Society, is taking time out to show you around. There is no entry charge, but donations are always appreciated. There is also a Guide to Batterie Lothringen at £2.00. If you’re really enthusiastic about the Occupation, Paul Burnal has published a book entitled 'Batterie Lothringen', which is the definitive history of Jersey's only German naval artillery battery, from its formation in 1940 through to the present day. To order please contact Paul on +44 (0)1534 482894 or [email protected]. £30.00 softback, £45 hardback.
