WebConnect

You can’t imagine your workplace without its numerous Web-based applications. Yet, you still have irreplaceable applications and data on mainframe and midrange enterprise systems. So, instead, imagine:

• Instantly Web-enabling the millions of lines of executable code on those systems.

• Automatically rejuvenating those systems’ host applications.

• Easily sharing with your partners, new users, and suppliers the vital information those systems contain.

Now, stop imagining. All of this is possible when you deploy WebConnect.

WebConnect’s superb, built-in terminal emulation makes your legacy applications far more valuable than before, as they now can interact seamlessly with your Web-based workplace. With WebConnect, you have all the capabilities mentioned above, and more - without compromising security or even having to modify the original applications.

• It’s simple - WebConnect allows remote, Web-enabled access for any authorised user, with full functionality and requires no additional terminal emulation software, no changes at the host, and no installation of software (or its inevitable updates) on your company’s many PCs. This is a tremendous advantage over so-called “fat” clients.

• It’s sensible - With WebConnect’s budget-friendly licensing, which covers all your users, you buy only as many user licenses as you’ll have concurrent users.

• It’s seamless - OpenConnect pioneered seamless integration of SNA and TCP/IP, and WebConnect maintains this tradition with instant, desktop-to-enterprise host applications delivery via nearly any Web browser.

• It’s secure - In fact, the unique WebConnect architecture provides four levels of security.

• It’s SSO - That’s single sign-on. In short, each user submits their user ID and password just once, and that automatically gets them into all host applications with full data security maintained.

• Simplicity - Using WebConnect requires absolutely no specialised terminal emulation software or changes at the host. WebConnect’s built-in terminal emulation takes care of everything. (Please visit openconnect.com/webconnect for full technical specifications, including supported emulation types.)

• Various client options - There’s a WebConnect client that’s perfect for your environment’s preferred Web browser. The enhanced HTML5 client makes it possible to use even browsers that don’t support Java®; and it supports the same convenient copy/paste functionality with which users are familiar in their PC-based applications.

• Security - The WebConnect architecture has four thorough levels of security: application; session; transport; and host. WebConnect supports OpenSSL 1.0.2 (the latest version with long-term support), for maximum security in data transmissions across networks.

• Server-based superiority - Some competing products, such as traditional desktop-based terminal emulators, must be installed on a desktop-by-desktop basis. With WebConnect’s server-based architecture, any authorised user has complete, Web-enabled remote access to the host system. There’s absolutely no need to install anything on your company’s many PC desktops.

• Full host functionality - WebConnect’s full-featured, Web-based emulator ensures your users can employ the complete functionality - including communications and printing - of the host system. WebConnect supports both IND$FILE transfer (for transferring files between the emulator and an IBM mainframe) and IBM® 3287 printer emulation (for printing from mainframe applications).

• Persistent connection - WebConnect supports a true, end-to-end, persistent connection for thousands of concurrent sessions while employing standard monitoring tools and real-time host updates.

• HTML client conversion - Without additional programming, WebConnect instantly converts the host system’s traditional, character-based application screens into HTML for the browser.

• Desktop applet caching - To minimize load time and optimize performance, WebConnect locally caches desktop applets.

• Proxy firewall support - WebConnect employs HTML tunneling so users can connect through proxy servers.

• Third-party authentication capability - This allows integration with third-party authentication products, using an LDAP server for centralised user ID/password management.

• Network and resource optimization - Processing is accomplished on the host, the Web coprocessor, and the WebConnect client in a totally distributed architecture.

• Support for your mainframe modernisation - If you’ve decided that it’s preferable to modernise your mainframe infrastructure rather than fully migrate its applications and data, WebConnect is a powerful asset to such a strategy.

• Concurrent user licensing - Because WebConnect’s licensing covers all your users, you need only as many user licenses as you’ll have simultaneous users. After all, why pay for more than you’ll really need?

• Robust license management - With WebConnect, you can manage not only concurrent user licensing for a single server but also all licenses across multiple servers.

• Single sign-on (SSO) - WebConnect’s SSO feature directly integrates within the application and requires the user to authenticate just once, after which they’ve automatically signed onto all host applications while the existing host security infrastructure is maintained. Sensitive data is stored within the “glass house” while users access critical host applications. Once again, centralised management of each user’s ID and password is provided through integration with LDAP servers.

• Platform independence - WebConnect lets you access host data and applications from desktops and other devices, regardless of the operating system, hardware platform, or resource capacity being used.

• Session access control - This enhances security by allowing configuration of user and group profiles to limit the number of open sessions, access to specific applications, and hours during which access is allowed.

• Easy administration - WebConnect enables simple, Web-based, centralised management configuration/session files and automatic distribution of new client versions.

• Extensibility - Existing host applications are quickly deployed in either a familiar “green-on-black” format or a rejuvenated format, leveraging existing management tools and IT infrastructure.

• High-level programmer interface - WebConnect fully supports industry-standard EHLLAPI to provide application-level access to your host system. For those environments using Java, WebConnect works with JHLLAPI, a robust, EHLLAPI-style interface which lets Java applets or application programmes work smoothly with host systems.
