It was a holiday in Corfu which/that first gave me the idea to write this novel. The

story is about a family which/that moves to a small village on the island to start a

new life. They discover that the villagers, who at first seem open and welcoming, are

actually desperate to hide a terrible secret. While writing the book, I tried to include

descriptions of the island whose beauty fascinated me. I finished the book in just a

couple of months, which is quite fast, even for me. You see writing is something

which/that comes quite naturally to me now but it wasn't always like that. I mean, I

really used to find it hard at first and there was a time when I felt I had no talent at

all. I would have given up if it hadn't been for my father, who encouraged me to

keep writing. Now, besides writing, I also teach a Creative Writing course at a college

in Manchester, where I live with my family. I always tell my students that writing is a

career which/that requires patience, hard work as well as imagination.

Listening &SpeakingStudying in a foreign country

Studying in a foreign country has many advantages. You become fluent in the language

spoken in the country. i make friends from all over the world and you get to know a

different culture. A lot of foreign universities offer prestigious degrees greatly valued in the

job market (better employment prospects once you graduate.).

Studying in a foreign country also has many disadvantages. I might get lonely away from

friends and family. Language problems could hinder overall performance. It could be costly

and not all families can afford it.

Read the text below and choose the answer a, b or c that best fits each gap.During the week John leads a quiet life. His job in a construction company is not very

exciting. At the weekend, though, his life changes. He spends his time ( race- racing -

Croatia. The rough, twisting mountain roads, extreme heat and clouds of dust really

tested his (experience - endurance – demonstration) . Despite these harsh

conditions, John still managed ( complete - completing - to complete) the race in

second place and he won €1000. John also regularly gives talks around the country

about rally racing in the hope of (encourage - encouraging -to encourage) more

SpeakingWhat forms of entertainment are available where you live? There are a lot of things that you can do in my area. There are cafés, restaurants, lots of sports facilities and a shopping mall. So, whether you are interested in having a meal, hanging out, doing some shopping or engaging in sports activities yourneeds can easily be met.• What forms of entertainment are popular with young people in your country?

Traveller 4

Young people in my country enjoy a variety of entertainment activities. The activities they engage in vary depending on their interests. Besides going out to cafés and eating at restaurants, which are activities that most young people enjoy doing, some of them enjoy going to amusement parks as well. Sports activities are also popular weekend activities. For others, museums and art galleries are an interesting way to spend their leisure time.

so much that they decided (buying - buy -to buy) a house there. Guernsey is one of

the Channel Islands, located in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, a

region in northern France. The island’s capital is a(n) ( pretty - private – impressed)

harbour town with marinas and (natural -various - avid) shops, museums and

restaurants. Our house is (windsurf-- windsurfing - to windsurf) with some of my

friends. I also like going with my family on walks through the( scenic -guided-distant)

countryside or along the coast. Sometimes we take the ferry to the( nearby -

authentic – same) islands of Sark and Alderney, which have a ( pile -wealth - group)

of attractions. When my parents first told me they were buying a house in Guernsey,

I thought it ( might - can’t - couldn’t) be boring to go to the same ( holiday - place –
