Grade PrimaryMrs. Sheri Julian-Brooks

The primary students had a busy month throughout April. In math they have been talking about numbers to 10, and really enjoyed counting in a variety of ways.  Students learned how to play hopscotch and the many ways to show 10.  The primary students have been doing lots of writing and enjoy sharing stories about their families and all the wonderful things they do. It would be very helpful to help your children write at home so they can have more practice.

The students waited patiently all month to go on their field trip to the Discovery Centre in Halifax. We all had a great time exploring the displays, especially the t-Rex named Sue and learning about other dinosaurs. The primary students had a workshop on the senses and enjoyed the various activities using their senses. Once done the workshop the students were able to explore the rest of the Discovery Center; they had so much fun especially in the bubble room and the racetrack upstairs. Most of the students took a nap on the way home, all tired from our busy day!

The month of May will be busy as we explore our new unit of living things. We suggest going for a nature walk at home with your child so they can explore the living things as they are beginning to grow. Take some pictures of the trees budding and the flowers starting to bloom, then go back in a few weeks and take pictures again to compare the differences.  The students are very excited to start growing their own plants in the classroom and hopefully we'll have some beautiful flowers to take home.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers and aunties from the primary class at LSK!

Hello All!Our school year has been flying by! I cannot believe we are this far into Spring. We are that much closer to our end of year camping trip for the grades 4,5 and 6s. Students will be diligently "pounding the pavement" looking for support. We have an amazing BBQ package worth almost $500!! It could be all yours for the small price of $5 or get three tickets for $10! We also have great themed packages on our Facebook auction site. You have to contact one of the teachers or EAs from grades 4-6 to be added, as it is a closed group and limited to Indian Brook community members only (for ease of delivery purposes). We thank you in advance for your support, Nitap'k!

Grade 5s are also wrapping up their unit on the Middle Ages Social Structure by completing either a poster or Power Point presentation on a particular topic. Students are encouraged to do research at home and collect the information in their research booklets that have been provided. Outlines and rubrics have been sent home to parents so that they know exactly what is expected.

Grade 5s are also finishing up their novel study, Shiloh. Students have demonstrated a deep understanding of the many themes and complexities of this story. There will be a test at the end of the novel study and students are encouraged to use their literature circle jobs to help themselves study and prepare. The test will include comprehension questions, vocabulary activities as well as a written component. In the coming months we will be exploring media and

poetry. Grade SIXMs. Erika Hilchey

Hello Everyone!

Who can believe that April is over! Only 2 months of school left before we break for the summer. There are many things going on at the school and in the 4-6 Pod.

Currently the grade 6's are finishing up a unit on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and will be baking some yummy chocolate treats to share with the class and potentially at school. They are also finishing a science unit on Flight.

Grades 4 and 5 are working on units on Light and Properties and Changes in Matter. We have been experimenting with flashlights, mirrors, flubber and other things!

All the students in 4-6 are doing a mini unit on Van Gogh in Art and are painting and colouring various projects.

Finally the students in 4-6 are fundraising for our end of the field trip. We have online Facebook Auctions as well as a BBQ Raffle. See any student in grade 4-6 or give us a call at the school! Thanks for your support!!

The junior high students have been working hard on their math, even as the weather steadily gets nicer and nicer. The grade seven class is finishing up their unit on equations and has learned that to keep the balance of an equation, what you do to one side you must also do to the other. The grade eight class is just starting their graphing unit and will be creating their own graphs from a table of values. The grade nine class will be starting their unit on similarity and transformations where they will apply properties of similar polygons and learn why it’s important that architects, engineers,

designers and surveyors use similarity and scale diagrams routinely in their work.

Climbing Club May 2016

Levi working his way through the bouldering cave

This past month the LSK Climbing Club ventured out to Ground Zero Climbing Gym in Dartmouth. There, they were able to learn how to belay someone as they climb up the big wall affixed to a rope. They also had a blast monkeying around on the bouldering wall where they didn’t need to be attached to a rope. As the weather improves, the students are looking forward to getting outside on some real granite rock for a traditional bouldering session. Remember to chalk up and check your knot.

Well kids its spring again in Nova Scotia. The sun is out and the wind is cold, Yep its spring in Nova Scotia. With that being said mid terms are over and we are all sprinting towards summer. Some of the topics to be covered in May are. In geography 11 students will be looking at census taking and the importance of the census. In grade 12 geography students will be studying about urbanization and how it reflects the rural landscape and in economics 12 students will be learning about marketing and consumerism. Cheers

Grade TWELVEMrs. Nikki Maloney

Our students have been working this semester in

all of their courses. In English 11, we have been working away on our Author Study with Literature Circles on Don Aker. We are absolutely enjoying the new Yoga 11 course, and we are making major gains in our physical practice along with our own inner self-reflection. Our English 10 class is finishing up our fourth week of our Literature Circles Unit and has been eagerly discussing all our novels.

Our Grade 12 students are also busy with preparing for what next year may bring. Most have all sent in their applications for post secondary schooling and some have been accepted to SMU and NSCC. Others are still waiting patiently to hear back.

We all have been working hard on our fundraising for our end of the year graduation trip and graduation rings. Our last fundraiser was a 649 Bingo. We want to congratulate Jonathan Crawford and Duncan McDonald the split winners! Our current fundraiser is for an I Pad Mini with an I-tunes Card and a Case. Each ticket is $10 or 3 tickets for $20. Pop by the school or track down a Grad to get your tickets! :) The draw date is fastly approaching.

Graduation pictures are completed, rings have been ordered, our theme has been chosen and we are currently planning and organizing flights and activities for our trip. We would like to thank everyone who have been supporting us and want you all to know that we very much appreciate all the support!!

Happy May to All! Here we are at the edge of the end of another school year. Most of us think, “Oh yeah, just another year” but there are others who look at what's left of the school year with trepidation, knowing it's the end of a way of life for them. Yes, our 2015-2016 graduates are busy applying to post secondary schools, planning for jobs, looking forward to graduation and the Prom but they are also contemplating that this is the end of 12 years of a known way of life. Although the future is out there beckoning, it is often difficult to walk the path to embrace that future. Do all you can to help smooth the path for them, encourage them about the future, but most of all let them never forget that they are loved.

LEARNING CENTREMrs. Sarah Yorke

Happy Hug a Paramedic Month!

Just kidding! In all seriousness it is true that the last week of May is actually Paramedic Awareness

Week. Personally, I think that paramedics could easily have the whole month to celebrate all of the necessary and life saving things that they do on a daily basis. Sadly, many of us (myself included) don't take the time to acknowledge the hard work these people do until we need them to save us, or our loved ones from some painful situation. So this year, I challenge you to do something wonderful for your local paramedic during that last week of May, even if it is just a cup of coffee or a small box of Tim-bits and thanks for what you do! I am making this celebration my goal for May. I hope you join me! Have a healthy May and don't forget that the Bluenose Run happens this month. There are fun runs, t-shirts and good fun for children and adults alike! See you there.

LIBRARYMrs. Sharon Culbertson
