LESSON I - ADJECTIVES: DESCRIBING PRODUCTS

In Information Technology industry, the professionals should be competent enough in their language and grammar skills. As employees, they should be aware that English Language invests a lot in their field.

ADJECTIVES

As we can simply define, adjectives are describing words that modify noun or pronoun but do not modify verbs, adverbs, and other adjectives. Adjectives usually precede the noun or pronoun that it modifies. Adjectives answer the questions what kind? Which ones? Or how many?

Example: Rozen bought a new laptop.

(“New” describes what kind of laptop Rozen had bought. The underlined word is the adjective that modifies the noun “laptop”)

TYPES OF ADJECTIVES

Three, red, small, antique, and Japanese are all adjectives but they are not in the same kind. As to sort and classify them out, Adjectives have several types.

· Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive Adjectives names the quality of the noun or pronoun that it modifies.

Example: old net book

· Proper Adjectives

Proper Adjectives is the type of adjective that is derived from a proper noun.

Proper Noun is a noun that is used to denote a particular person, place, or thing, as Lincoln, Sarah, Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Hall.

Brazilian computers

The underlined words are proper nouns that acts as adjectives and modifies another noun.

· Limiting Adjective

Limiting adjective restricts the meaning of the word it modifies.

Examples: this keyboard

· Interrogative Adjective

Interrogative adjectives are the kind of adjectives that is used to ask a question.

Example: Whose adapter is this?

· Coordinating Adjective

Coordinating Adjectives are composed of two or more adjectives separated by a comma instead of a coordinating conjunction. To determine if you can replace the coordinating conjunction with a comma, see if the adjective can be reversed or if a coordinating conjunction can be added between the adjectives without changing the meaning.

Examples: The PC had a shiny, smooth screen.

The PC had a smooth, shiny screen.

The PC had a smooth and shiny screen.

As you can see, even if the adjectives are interchanged and separated by the coordinating conjunction ‘and’, the meaning of the sentence remained.

ORDER OF ADJECTIVES

Some noun or pronouns have many attributes and characteristics that cannot only be described with a single adjective. In this way, adjectives should follow a proper order. The table below contains the proper format of the order of adjectives. Familiarize the sequence and apply it on your own examples.

COMPARISONS OF ADJECTIVE

Adjectives do not usually stay in their absolute form. These are the attributes that are greater than the others and are gradable. Adjectives are divided into two degrees, the comparative and the superlative degree of comparison.

COMPARATIVE DEGREE

The noun or pronoun that is modified by an adjective is compared to another and is usually denoted by the word ‘than’.

However, in comparing adjectives, there are rules to follow.

Rules: There are several ways in comparing adjectives.

· Adding –r to words ending in ‘e’

Ex. Free- Freer

· Adding –er to the words that contains one vowel and one consonant at the end and double the consonant and add –er to the word.

Ex. Big-bigger

· Adding –er to words with more than one vowel or more than one consonant at the end.

Ex. Hard-harder

· Adding –er to words ending in –y. Change y to i and add –es.

Ex. Easy-easier

· Adding ‘more’ to words of two, three or longer syllables not ending in y.

SUPERLATIVE DEGREE

This degree of adjective is used to say what the noun or pronoun that is being modified has the most of a particular quality with the whole group or its kind.

Like the comparative degree, superlative degree has its own way of forming.

· Adding –est to words of one syllable

Ex. Long-longest

· Adding –est to words of two syllables ending in –y. Change y to I and add –est.

Ex. Easy-easiest

· Adding –est to words with one vowel and one consonant at the end. Double the consonant and add –est to the end of the word.

Ex. Big-biggest

· Adding ‘most’ to words of two, three or more syllables not ending in –y. it is to be placed before the adjective.

In order to create an effective and correct comparison, the rules above should be followed. However, not all adjectives follow the same rules, some do not have their regular forms, and these are called irregular adjectives.

COMPOUND ADJECTIVES

Compound adjectives are adjectives that consist of two or more words that functions as one adjective. A compound adjective could be hyphenated or separated depending of its position in the sentence. Hyphenate the compound adjective when it comes before the noun it modifies. On the other hand, do not hyphenate the compound adjective when it comes after the noun it modifies.

EXAMPLES:

Hyphenated

We are living in a high-technology planet.

( the compound adjective high-technology comes before the noun that it modifies which is ‘planet’. Therefore it should be hyphenated.)

Separated

We are living in a planet with high technology.

(The compound adjective ‘high technology’ comes after the noun that it modifies which is ‘planet’. Therefore, it should not be hyphenated.)

In endorsing or advertising products, there is so much need of oneself competence in order to be productive. As employees, you should be skillful and prolific in your field to help people in your surroundings and to be able to write effectively. To write effectively means to perform effectively in a given task.

LESSON II - VOCABULARY: COMPUTER TERMS

Introduction

A person's vocabulary is the set of words within a language that are familiar to that person. A vocabulary usually develops with age, and serves as a useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge. Acquiring an extensive vocabulary is one of the largest challenges in learning a second language.

Definition and usage

Vocabulary is commonly defined as "all the words known and used by a particular person". Knowing a word, however, is not as simple as merely being able to recognize or use it. There are several aspects of word knowledge that are used to measure word knowledge.

The importance of a vocabulary

An extensive vocabulary aids expression and communication.

Vocabulary size has been directly linked to reading comprehension.

Linguistic vocabulary is synonymous with thinking vocabulary.

A person may be judged by others based on his or her vocabulary.

Wilkins (1972) once said, "Without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed."

Writing Vocabulary

The words we can retrieve when we write to express ourselves. We generally find it easier to explain ourselves orally, using facial expression and intonation to help get our ideas across, then to find just the right words to communicate the same ideas in writing. Our writing vocabulary is strongly influenced by the words we can spell.

Think about it: When reading, a child with hearing will say all the phonemes related to a word to sound it out. They will then guess a word they know. This is dependent upon their lexicon (mental the following information was based on information from Judy K. Montgomery’s book: The Bridge of Vocabulary: Evidence Based Activities for Academic Success (NCS Pearson Inc, 2007) dictionary). Children would not guess a word they didn’t know. Deaf students do not use auditory memory to sound out a word. They mostly memorize spelling patterns. Therefore, students who are deaf typically use a reduced variety of words in writing while they are learning.

1. Group yourselves into 8 and form a circle. Each group should have at least 6 participants for our activity today.

4. After reading the word with meaning I will count from 123 and you go make and write a sentence you've constructed in the board.

5. I will only give you 2 minutes in writing your sentence. When the time is up, finished or unfinished go back to your respected circles.

6. Then we will all check if the sentence construction is right and if it is right you will have a point and if not then you will have no points.

LESSON III - EMAIL WRITING: ENDORSING PRODUCTS AND COMMUNICATING WITH CUSTOMERS

HOW TO WRITE A FORMAL EMAIL

There are many tips in order to write a Formal Email:

· In writing a formal email, you should first consider your username. It should be proper and neutral because if you use unprofessional username in composing email, your receiver might not believe you or might consider you joking. Remember that in communicating with clients, you are communicating with professionals.

Example:

Be sure to provide a concise email address in order to catch the attention of the client.

· Use a short and accurate subject header. Do not overwrite and use keywords instead. Be specific with your keywords and make sure to include the whole thought.

Example: ‘Meeting regarding the damaged monitors in the café on March 12th’

· Use a proper salutation. You can use the name or surname of the recipient. In addressing the person’s title, you can use ( Dr., Mr., Mrs., or Ms). If you don’t know the name of the recipient, you can use Dear Sir/Madam followed by a colon (:)

Example: Dear Mr. Elizalde,

Dear Sir/Madam:

· In the first paragraph of your message, you may introduce yourself and include your purpose of why you are messaging that particular person.

· The body of your message should be summarized and it should convey the exact message and is direct to the point. Break the message up into pieces in order for the reader to easily grasp the exact thought in the sentence.

· The sentences in the paragraph should be short and limited. Avoid informal writing especially using contraction (e.g. can’t, don’t, isn’t and etc.)

· Use the correct form of leave-taking. The form of leave-takings depends on your level of intimacy with the recipient.

· Sign with your full name and include your job title in the line after your company. You can also write the company name or website.

· Make sure not to drop any important details in your email.

· Revise and check your grammar and spelling. Make sure not to commit any mistakes in sentence structures.

PUNCTUATION MARKS

In writing emails for your clients or customers, you must be knowledgeable enough about the structure of your sentences and paragraphs and even the use of punctuation marks.

Punctuation marks are essential and are a highlight in your message. It helps the reader understand your message easily. In writing emails, you have to consider that the reader has only what is on the screen of the computer in order to understand your message. Punctuations basically helps to determine the pauses, stops, rises, falls, and etc. Punctuations helps you in conveying your message with clarity in multiple situations. The table below shows the different kinds of punctuations, its symbol and uses.

TENSES OF THE VERB

Verb has four basic properties, the voice, person, mood and the tense. Basically, in writing emails, the most useful property is the tense. In writing messages to your client you should be conscious of the structure of your composition. The tense of the verb acts as the time indicator of the language. It helps the reader analyze when the action had occurred, is occurring or will occur.
