Step 1: Choose Your Citizenship Issue

Page 4: mrpattisson.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewSTEP 1: Choose a Citizenship issue and a group to work with. STEP 2: Research the issue and get in touch with people in power. STEP 3:

You need to choose a ‘Citizenship Issue’ for your coursework. What is a Citizenship issue?A Citizenship issue is any issue that is linked to anything we have learned about on this course. In other words, it must link to one of these issues:

1. Human rights in this country or around the world.2. The criminal justice system – police, courts, judges, lawyers, prisons etc.3. Decision-making, democracy, Parliament, government, voting and people with power.4. The media.5. The environment and sustainable development.6. The economy, taxation and the relationship between employers and employees.7. Cultural diversity, refugees and immigrants8. Global issues, the United Nations, the European Union.

What kind of issues could I choose for my controlled assessment? There is a huge choice, but here are some examples:

School issues: Teenage pregnancy Cyber-bullying Helping people get along better in our diverse school Prices in the canteen

Local issues Teenage pregnancy Helping people get along better in our diverse community Road safety in our area

National issues: Should young people be able to vote at 16? Student tuition fees The UK riots and how to stop them happening again

International issues: Fighting for human rights around the world, for example child labour or

slavery Refugees and asylum-seekers Fair trade Campaigning for change in a particular country, for example Burma

You have to share your project with ‘people in positions of power’. Who are people in positions of power?

These are some examples of ‘people in positions of power’. You will need to choose 2 that have power over the issue you have chosen:

Page 5: mrpattisson.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewSTEP 1: Choose a Citizenship issue and a group to work with. STEP 2: Research the issue and get in touch with people in power. STEP 3:

National issues:

Your local MP Ministers in the Government David Cameron, Prime Minister Celebrities National organisations, charities, businesses or campaign groups

International issues: Our partner school in India Your local MP Ministers in the Government David Cameron, Prime Minister Celebrities International organisations, charities, businesses or campaign groups

You have to take action on your chosen issue. What are the ways that I can take action?

Consult students on an issue they care about and then make a presentation to

Mr Brown and the senior teachers..

Make a presentation to people in positions of power. Set up a stall to educate students

about an important issue, for example Fair Trade.

Page 9: mrpattisson.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewSTEP 1: Choose a Citizenship issue and a group to work with. STEP 2: Research the issue and get in touch with people in power. STEP 3:

For this step you must do some research, so you know what you are talking about, and then communicate with two people with power over your issue (see Step 1 for suggestions). You need to give your opinion on the issue and ask for their opinion. This could be through an email, letter, interview or meeting. Here are some suggestions for your research:

Interview an expert Do a student survey Use the Internet Read newspaper articles Watch TV programmes

STEP 3 – TAKE ACTION!Now you actually have to go out and do something about your chosen issue! You should have planned this out already.

What do you need to know?

How will you record what you find out?

How can you get this information?
