1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. General:** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Retain provision below if Contractor is to provide design/build services in connection with railing assembly. Delete provision below if components, sizes, and structural loads applied are determined by the Architect and indicated on the contract documents.

1. System design is designated as delegated design. Contractor shall be responsible to coordinate and assume or assign to subcontractors and/or suppliers responsibility for design, calculations, submittals, permits if required, fabrication, delivery and installation of Contractor Design components.

2. Structural calculations shall be prepared by a registered structural engineer. The engineer shall be licensed in the state in which project is located.

3. Contractor shall furnish proof of insurance certifying Fabricator-Installer is specifically insured in the fabrication and installation of safety railings and handrails.

4. Contractor shall perform installation by component supplier, or under supplier's direct supervision.

B. Design requirements:1. Components shall be free from defects impairing strength, durability and appearance.

Exposed surfaces throughout system shall have same inherent texture and color for similar locations.

2. Exposed fasteners shall be of same materials, color and finish as material to which applied.

3. Design and fabricate assemblies and systems to resist loads required by applicable building codes.

4. Design supports and hardware to withstand loads encountered without excessive deflection or distortion when cables are tensioned to required loading and to conform to building codes.

C. Structural Requirements: Provide railings capable of withstanding the effects of gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated:1. Handrails:

a. Uniform load of 50 lbf/ft. (0.73 kN/m) applied in any direction.b. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied in any direction.c. Uniform and concentrated loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.

2. Top Rails of Guards:a. 50 lbf/ft. (0.73 kN/m) applied horizontally and concurrently with 100 lbf/ft. (1.46

kN/m) applied vertically downward.b. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied in any direction.c. Uniform and concentrated loads need not be assumed to act concurrently.

3. Infill of Guards:a. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89 kN) applied horizontally on an area of 1 sf

(0.093 sm).4. Railing shall comply with all requirements of the ADA and OSHA regulations.

D. Thermal Movements: Provide exterior railings that allow for thermal movements resulting from the following maximum change (range) in ambient and surface temperatures by preventing buckling, opening of joints, overstressing of components, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss.

F (100 degrees C), material surfaces.

E. Control of Corrosion: Isolate dissimilar materials to prevent galvanic action and other forms of corrosion.

1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.2. Detailed specification of construction and fabrication.3. Manufacturer's installation instructions.4. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.

C. Shop Drawings: Submit Shop Drawings for fabrication and installation. Include the following:1. Plans, elevations, and detail sections.2. Indicate materials, methods, finishes, and types of joinery, fasteners, anchorages, and

accessory items. Specify finishes.3. Provide setting diagrams and templates for anchorages, sleeves, and bolts installed

by others.4. Where materials or fabrications are indicated to comply with certain design loadings,

include structural computations, material properties, and other information needed for structural analysis.

E. Structural Calculations: Submit structural calculations on Contractor engineered assemblies. Calculations shall include, but are not limited to:1. Description of design criteria of dead loads, equipment loads and service loads.2. Stress and deflection analysis.3. Fastener shear and withdraw calculations with safety factors applied.

F. Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two complete sets of color/finish chips representing manufacturer's full range of available colors and patterns.

G. Verification Samples: For each finish product specified, two samples, minimum size 6 inches (150 mm) square, representing actual product, color/finish, and patterns.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer's Qualifications:1. Not less than 10 years experience in the actual production of specified products.2. Components shall be factory fabricated and engineered by single entity.

B. Installer's Qualifications: Firm with 3 years experience in installation of systems similar in complexity to those required for this Project.

C. Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally qualified to practice in jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind required. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations that are similar to those required for this Project in material, design, and extent.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

D. Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.1. Finish areas designated by Architect.

4. Test Reports: Submit independent testing report developed for this Project certifying proposed railing system including attachment method detailing compliance with load requirements and local building codes.

E. Pre-installation conference: Prior to beginning architectural rigging system work, hold a conference to review work to be accomplished.1. Contractor, Architect, fabricator, installer and other subcontractors whose work

involves architectural rigging system shall attend conference.2. Contractor shall notify all parties at least seven days prior to time for conference.3. Contractor shall record minutes of meeting and distribute to attending parties.4. Meeting shall include review of the following:

a. Method of attachment of components to supporting surfaces.b. Installation, adjusting, cleaning, and protection of architectural assemblies.c. Coordination with other work.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.

B. Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Field measurements: Take field measurements after permanent end terminations are in place and prior to preparation of shop drawings and fabrication, to ensure fitting of work.

B. Single source responsibility: Architectural rigging system components shall be products of a single manufacturer or be approved by primary manufacturer for use in architectural rigging system.

C. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

1.9 WARRANTY

A. Manufacturer warrants the goods manufactured or sold by it to be free of defects in materials or workmanship for one year from the date of purchase by the original purchaser except that:1. This warranty shall not apply to any product which has been improperly fitted,

improperly maintained, or used in any application for which it was not intended.2. This warranty shall not apply to normal wear which can reasonably be expected in

normal use of the product.3. Manufacturer makes no warranties that its products are fit for a particular purpose.4. Manufacturer's liability shall be limited to the repair or replacement, at its discretion, of

the defective goods.5. This warranty shall not apply to products installed in severe chlorine or high humidity

environments (eg. covered swimming pools), due to potential stress corrosion and reliance on appropriate cleaning methods.

6. Manufacturer accepts no liability for components or assemblies used in aeronautical applications.

7. The useful life of wire rope assemblies shall be assessed in each application, and

thus no guarantee will be provided for product life, load capacity or any other factor due to the variability in usage.

2.2 STAINLESS STEEL HANDRAILS AND RAILINGS

A. Product: INOX as manufactured by Indital, USA.** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Stainless steels are metal alloys based on iron, chromium, carbon and other elements such as nickel, molybdenum, manganese, and silicon which makes the material particularly resistant to certain types of corrosion.

1. Components shall be made of alloy and grades as designated by the American Iron and Steel Institute.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** AISI 304 is the most common grade used in the case of Indital's INOX product line; typical in most applications serving both exterior and interior applications. Delete if not required.

2. Stainless Steel: AISI 304.** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** AISI 316 is recommended especially for coastal applications where oxidation due to salt water is common thus causing potential rust or damaged parts to your stair or rail system. Delete if not required.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared.

B. Fully inspect the existing structure to verify a structurally sound base for anchoring railing system.

C. Do not proceed with Work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

D. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Coordinate and furnish anchorages and setting drawings, diagrams, templates, instructions, and directions for the installation of items having integral anchors which are to be embedded in concrete or masonry construction. Coordinate delivery of such items to the Project Site.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installation. Set accurately in location, alignment and elevation, plumb, level, and true, measured from established lines and levels.

C. Fastening to in-place construction: Provide anchorage devices and fittings to secure to in-place construction; including threaded fittings for concrete inserts, toggle bolts and through-bolts. Separate dissimilar materials with bushings, grommets or washers to prevent electrolytic corrosion.

D. Do not cut or abrade finishes which cannot be completely restored in the field. At contractor's option do either of the following:1. Return items with such finishes to shop for required alterations, followed by complete

refinishing.2. Provide new units.3. Field touch-up of finishes are not acceptable.

E. Mounting brackets shall be securely mounted to building structure in a positive manner including sufficient reinforcements and anchors as required.
