11/05/2020 Dear Parents, Guardians and Children, Thank you to every family who responded to the postcards. It was great to find out how the boys and girls are doing and what fun they have been up to. You will find some photos on the class page. Check out what your friends have been up to. Our theme this week is “People who help us”- The Fire Services. I have made a general plan below of how we can link it into some of the subjects. I will suggest a book “The Emergency Services” but if you have any children’s book about a fire engine, feel free to use that instead. Happy 7 th Birthday Izzy! She will celebrate on the 17 th May. If you have any tech issues or questions about the course work, feel free to email [email protected] . I hope you all stay safe and well for the week ahead and I look forward to hearing from you. They can write 2/3 sentences about a member of the fire service. For example: I am a fire fighter. She is strong and fast. He is clever and kind. The fire fighter help people who are in danger. They use a hose and ladder.

Remind children to write on the line and have a space between their words.

Tall letters are tall are touch the top line like t, l, h ,k f. Small letters are sitting on the line like a, c, e, u, i. Letters with tails go under the line like g, j, y.

Capitals at the start of a sentence Full stop at the end of the sentence.

This is all about encouragement to write and don’t worry if there’s spelling errors. This activity is to enjoy writing and boost confidence. Get the child to read the word or sentence back to you. Praise tall letters touching the top line, capitals at the start or spaces between the words.

Dictation – encourage the children to sound all the words out themselves, remind them to stretch the words out to help them. Please do not spell the words for the children, let them try by themselves. Correct together. ai ay a_e

1. Help! There is a boy in pain. 2. I made a card for the fire fighters. 3. They gave some money to pay for the mask.4. The rain helped put out the fire.

Let the children read this aloud independently. Say the phrase “Chop it up” or “If in doubt, sound it out”. Sound out the words together if needed. Give them hints if they are stuck on words.

They all should have a Core reader 4 & 5 in their hw folder. For anyone who was absent. All Core Readers are available on this link. https://my.cjfallon.ie/dashboard/student-resources .

Money- In Senior Infants, we focus on 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c. Adding up to the value of 10c. Use real money if you have it. If you don’t have 1c/ 2c/ 5c/10c coins, draw some on cardboard and cut them out.

First, we will let them see all the coins 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 1 euro, 2 euro. Name all the coins together with your child. This week we will focus on identifying 1c. Let them feel the money. Infants learn best when they have a sensory experience. Ask the following questions

Find the number on each coin? What is the picture on the front of the coin? Earth. Are both sides of the coin the same? Is there a picture on the back of the coin? What is the symbol on Irish coins? What shape is it? What material is it made from?

These coins are brown in colour and are smaller than the others. Put them in order of size. 1c, 2c, 5c. Which coin is the smallest? 1c Which coin is the biggest? 5c

Note: There is not a coin for each number. We have to use the coins we have to make up that amount/value. Eg there’s no 4 cent coin but we can use a 2c+2c=4c

Page 12: stconlethsns.weebly.com · Web viewPersonal safety- If your clothes catch fire. How can the fire be put out. (Remove one part of the fire triangle – heat, oxygen or fuel.) This

Sorting activity: Ask your child to sort the coins into 4 groups. 1c coins together, 2c coins together, 5c coins together, 10c coins together.

Focus on 1c coins first. Adding 1c coins is straight forward as its just counting in 1. Use real coins and ask them to count up the coins. 1c+1c=2c 1c+1c+1c=3c 1c+1c+1c+1c=4c 1c+1c+1c+1c=5cCall out a value and get the child to draw the correct amount of coins. Focus on 1c questions only. For example: Call out 2 cent- Draw 2 1c coins. Do the same for 3 cent, 4 cent, 5 cent, 6 cent, 7 cent, 8 cent, 9 cent, 10 cent. This may sound easy but they must have a very good

foundation level understanding before they start 5 cent coins next week. See powerpoint for extra activities.

Toy ShopSet up a small pretend toy shop with a few toys for sale. Label the items 1c or 2c. Today, we will only give the child, 1c and 2c coins to “buy” something in the shop. For example, the teddy bear costs 2c. The child must use the coins in their hands to pay for the item. 1c+1c=2c. Enough to buy the teddy bear. Help them with the role play until they are comfortable to pay by themselves. If they are comfortable with this, increase the prices to 4c, 5c, 6c. Tons of practise needed adding and handling money.

BUSY AT MATHS HOMEWORK BOOK. COMPLETE PG 36 (remember add the bigger value coin first (5c) and then count on the other values.)

Next week we will focus on 5c. Adding 1c, 2c, 5c coins. Buying items in a slightly more expensive shop.

In school, we break money down into teaching steps and there’s a lot of content. If you go too fast, the students can get confused as they didn’t fully understand the basic information.

10.Religion Pg 62, 63 This month, we focus on Mary as May is her special month. In school, we would set up a May Altar with a statue of Mary, drawings, special prayers, flowers, candles and rosary beads. Feel free to set one up if you want. Say the Hail Mary with your child. They do not know this prayer yet but let them hear it and they might join in with the words that they do know.

Angel Gabriel came to visit Mary and told her the good news. She was going to have a baby. Mary was the mother of Jesus. She lived in Nazareth with Jesus and Joseph. Her special colour is blue. Hail Mary is her special prayer.
