First Reading Genesis 1:1-2:2 (selected verses)In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. ... And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” … And it was so. ... And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. ... And God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. ... And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night...” And it was so. ... And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” ... And God saw that it was good. … And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. ... And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make man in Our image, after Our

likeness...” So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” … And it was so. And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.P O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Second Reading Genesis 15:1-6After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then He said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness.P O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Third Reading Matthew 2:1-12Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:  “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.’”  Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found Him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship Him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.P O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Fourth Reading Matthew 27:45-46, 50 and Matthew 28:1-10

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” … And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up His spirit…Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, as He said. Come, see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead, and behold, He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell His disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”P O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Fifth Reading Acts 1:6-11

So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is

not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when He had said these things, as they were looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as He went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven.”P O Lord, have mercy on us.C Thanks be to God.

Lord's PrayerC Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy

kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

SalutationP The Lord be with you.C And also with you.

Collect of the DayAlmighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever.C Amen.

Prayer of the ChurchP Lord God, heavenly Father, we are thankful that with You we have

forgiveness.C How blessed we are that for the sake of Your Son, You do not hold

us guilty for our iniquities.P Although You have just reasons to be angry with us for our sins, we are

thankful that Your Son’s sacrifice has turned Your anger away from us.C We no longer need to be afraid of Your justice; we trust in Your

mercy.P You have turned our weakness into strength for the sake of Your Son, our

Savior, Jesus Christ.C Having already received our inheritance in the certainty of our

salvation, help us to let others know that they may have the same inheritance.

P Make us realize that by sharing this inheritance, we increase our joy as well as theirs.

C Do not permit us to envy those to whom You seemingly have given more and greater blessings.

P Help us to welcome into our fellowship all who receive Your Son as their Savior.

C Be with our own nation and the nations of the world.P Bring to naught the threats of war so that the rumors of war may be

dispelled.C Grant that the peace established between previously warring nations

may be a lasting one.P Be with the refugees of war-torn countries, and help them find in You

their strength and sustenance.C Increase our zeal in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which

alone can bring lasting peace to the world. P May the sick find in You their healing strength.C Lead the erring back to Your fold, and help us to live in Your honor

and glory.

C Amen.
