Amendment to the Constitution We live in a time where we can no longer take the biblical understanding of marriage for granted.  Religious liberty advocates are strongly encouraging churches to adopt a formal wedding policy in light of recent political and legal developments concerning marriage.  While our church has a wedding policy, if we were to be legally challenged for our beliefs concerning marriage it would be important for us to have a policy that has been formally endorsed by the church.  Therefore we are proposing to add an amendment to the constitution clearly defining our position on marriage and what kind of weddings will be acceptable on church property.  Working with legal experts, the Missouri Baptist Convention has written the policy below (slightly modified for our context).  We will vote on adding this policy as an amendment to our church constitution at our June 23 business and prayer meeting.  If you have any questions please ask, and I hope I see you at our business and prayer meeting this month.

Proposed Marriage Policy for First Baptist Church

Our statement of faith, the Baptist Faith and Message (2000), expresses our fundamental biblical conviction that Christian marriage is, by definition, the spiritual and physical uniting of one man and one woman in an exclusive covenant commitment for their joint lifetime.   Christian marriage is God's unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His Church. As such, this church believes that wedding ceremonies on church property are spiritual observances of worship of God who created this divine institution. As worship services, weddings on church property shall be officiated by one or more ordained ministers of the gospel. The church may decline to make its facilities or ministers available for any wedding if it is determined that one or both of the parties are not biblically and/or legally qualified to marry. Such determinations may be made by the Senior Pastor subject to the direction of the church.  No minister or employee of the church shall officiate at any marriage ceremony unless such marriage is consistent with this policy.  

Reminder:Beginning June 2 and going through August 25, we will only have one service of worship on Sunday mornings.  Our Sunday morning schedule will be Bible Study at 9:45 and worship service at 11:00.  Our Sunday and Wednesday evening service schedules, both beginning at 6:00 and open to everyone in the church, will remain the same.

We would like to thank the college kids who gave up their Friday night to have a benefit for our family. Thank you to everyone who participated in “Parents Night Out.” Also, thank you for everyone who sent cards after my Dad’s passing. Thanks FBC for the beautiful flowers.
