Online Identity Proposal

Digital identities are something that has a positive or negative affect on people careers in

their personal and professional lives. Most employers today look at how people represent

themselves through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social sites. It

is important that educators and other leaders within the community are aware of the online and

social media actions due to this could affect their careers and how the public view them as a

person. Every action online can be traced back to any specific person at any given time. The

individuals assessing of the online identity of others allows people to unbiasly learn how to

analyze the material and create a positive digital identity. When a person analyzes their own as a

first understanding in the learning process, they remain influenced because of the attachment to

themselves. Therefore, studying two individuals who are held highly in the community is

necessary in order to properly learn how to create a positive digit identity. Then learners can turn

to their own platforms and adjust as they seem necessary. To properly analyze their digital

identity, there will be a data collection chart that will touch upon posts, likes, and shares that are

both positive and negative.

Subjects and Platforms

The two individuals I choose are Dr. Jessie King and Dr. Alma Harris. Dr. King has been

in the Leland School District since 1996 and started as a substitute teacher. Dr. King is now the

Superintendent of the Leland Public School District in Leland, Mississippi. Dr. King was

formally World History and World Geography teacher and the Principal of Leland High School.

Dr. King focuses on striving to do what’s best for our students and ensure they are being taught

the proper material to excel in their education. He is an excellent role model and great examples


on how to stay motivated and push harder for a better future. Dr. King is also the pastor of

Greater St. Peter Church in Greenville, Mississippi. Dr. King shows strong characteristics on

how to have a positive aspect on social media and in the public eye. His passions are online tools

to help the classroom instruction for Subject Area Testing subjects.

Dr. Alma Harris is a youth court counselor with an educational background in education

the juvenile delinquents through the Washington County Juvenile Justice System in Greenville,

Mississippi. Dr. Harris has been in the correctional educational setting for over 30 years. She has

all the qualifications for a positive role model for young women and single mothers. Dr. Harris

received her PhD in 2016. Dr. Harris is a great example of how to use social media as a

professional and personal aspect. She is a marvelous lady and really enjoys helping the troubled

youth obtain an education while incarcerated. It’s important that these individuals are looked at

closely as educators and the impact it has on their professional lives. It will be very interesting to

see the similarities and differences between them and their social media accounts.

Data Collecting

To truly examine the positive identities of these two have worked to create, there must be

some type of collection graph. The chart below is based off of Zwilling’s (2015) 6 Keys to a

Positive Online Presence and Reputation. This graph is reliant on on Zwiling's ideas but it

modified to fit the two educators that will be studied. There are a few things that will be

analyzed; the number of posts, the content and purpose of post, and finally the intended viewers

or any collaborators. These will determine the effectiveness, expertise, and digital identities of

the two. The data will be collected in the chart below:

This graph will lead to early analyses, but after recognizing a pattern it may change the

analysis to a divergent idea. Most importantly, it will be used to evaluate the overall image of the

digital identity. It will allow a study that may have little distinctions that could be hurtful despite

its purpose. This analysis will be useful in knowledge and in turn avoiding negative media.

Data Trends and Professionalism

Online Profile of Dr. Jessie King

Dr. Jessie King is known to many families, students, teachers and community members

as the Superintendent of the Leland Public Schools. Dr. King has been working in Leland since

June of 2014. Dr. King is an idealistic and inspired leader who brings over twenty years of

experience as an educator to his role as superintendent of Leland Public Schools. Dr. King uses

social media sites, in an appropriate and professional way. Dr. King has a full profile on

Facebook. He has a broad and laid out profile, with each one of his professional experiences

related to education, and when and where these took place. He has over 651 friends and 66 of

those friends are mutual to my account, and use this site as a networking tool. After looking at

Dr. King’s Facebook profile, it was clear that he cares and appreciates the teachers and educators

who work with him. He has several post and shares from the school page. His posts are mainly

based on what is going on in the Leland Public Schools and his church Greater St. Peter Baptist

Church. He has commented on several parents, teachers and other colleagues post as well. Dr.

King seems very proud to be a part of the Leland community, which is obvious through his


Facebook account. His profile is very student centered, always with pictures or quotes about

students. He uses Facebook as a platform to communicate and share lesson ideas, performances,

tips and other things that are happening around Leland and Leland Public Schools. He shares

many things concerning to safety of students, and how the community is coming together to help

provide a safer environment for students going back to school. Through his social media, it is

obvious that Dr. King loves his job and the community he work, and in which he is from. This is

important to see from a leader.

Online Profile of Alma Harris

Dr. Alma Harris is a busy and very intelligent woman. She is

an experienced teacher with years in the Juvenile Correctional

Setting. She worked with adult and youth delinquents to help create a


better life and appropriate programs that continued to make the Washington County Regional

Correctional Facility in Greenville, MS more educational place for adults within the system.

Alma has now moved her knowledge to Washington County Youth Court and still supports and

posts about WCRCF.

Through Alma’s practice, she has always shown positive potentials over her online

occurrence both professionally and personally. Alma often posts other websites or resources for

people in the community to use on her online accounts. She is supportive and passionate about

children and her career as an educator. She has a full profile on Facebook and LinkedIn. She has

a complete and laid out profile, with each one of her professional experiences related to

education and the correctional system. She has 558 Facebook friends, and uses this site as a

networking tool. Dr. Alma Harris is an active member on Facebook.

She moves from social, personal, and professional daily. She balances each in a

remarkably positive appearance. All of her sites are demonstrating suitable digital procedure, a

responsiveness of electronic standards of conduct, agreement or technique. Not only do they

uphold one standard of etiquette, but the appropriate standard for the type of platform. Her

Facebook account reflects a more personal format. Nevertheless, it is clear that her love of

technology still succeeds through her frequent posts that give shout outs to new and even older

valued knowledge. She accurately balances the proper morals of behaviors depending on the

platform therefore reflecting a positive digital identity.


Discussion

The most inspiring part of this study is Dr. Jessie King’s ability to balance all types of media and

still remain professional. My primary review of his accounts is that serves as a crossroad for all

of his sites was doubtfully positive even as I took a further look at her personal blogs, still he did

not have any negative post only positive, inspiring, and inspirational posts. Discussion

Both Dr. King and Dr. Harris are characterized professionals in the field of education and

corrections. Both are great examples of how someone could be professional online. Dr. King

and Dr. Harris both encourage education in the Washington County area and the students that fill

these schools, as well as repost information that is going on in both the school and corrections.


They both use their sites to encourage knowledge and teaching and use them to present

themselves as professionals in their field. In doing this, it is also obvious that they love the field

of education and everything that comes with it. Both are passionate about their posts and create

appropriate and consistent assets for others. Their online presence will promote professional

Personal Learning Environments by leading by example. Both of these people are models of how

to properly brand you as an educator on social media.
