2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School District CNA survey have been sorted by stakeholder group and school but not otherwise edited. Parent responses may appear in more than one place since they could choose more than one school. [CSDSC3] Considering all school district facilities, what do you consider the area(s) of greatest need? COMMUNITY a long term plan to address growth issues for space without compromising the unique togetherness of all students in each grade. This is CPSD greatest strength and could have negative unintended consequences across clinton if certain students are separated. the school within a school cuts down on many admin costs. Having multiple admin teams for the same grades is inefficient and makes it much harder to present a unified message to everyone A new elementary school that would keep the students in the the same grade together. The plan would be as follows: Clinton Park: all kindergarten students and 1/2 of grade 1: Northside; 1/2 of grade 1 and all of grade 2; Eastside: all of grade 3 and 1/2 half of grade 4: New School; 1/2 of grade 4 and all of grade 5. All other schools would remain the same if they have room. If not, additions could be made. During those years when grades are split, students would be assigned to their schools via a lottery system. A new high school band building and a band hall for 6th graders Additional classrooms Additions to the elementary schools. The schools are having to use portable buildings for extra space. As a parent of former students / band students - a larger band facility is greatly needed. Auditorium/Performing Arts Center Better traffic flow and control! The high school desperately needs a new band hall. The band has way over grown the current facility.I believe the member count this

year was 224 and growing. It also needs to be built on a flat piece of land so pushing the equipment to the band hall would not have to be such a chore. I always thought the practice field would be the perfect sight. We have a very talented band. I truly believe this would be money well spent. Band was one of the best choices my son made. He learned how to play a drum, but he was also taught so much more in life lessons. It was an awesome experience!I am concerned that the racial makeup of the Clinton Public Schools is changing so rapidly that it will impact both recruitment of families and the level of achievement of the district.I do not feel qualified to answer this as I am no longed in the school system.I do not know, all seem more that adequate.I feel strongly that the music facilities could use an update. The teaching is strong, kids are enjoying the programs. But the facilities seem dated in comparison to other districts we have visited.Indoor Practice Facility for SportsIt is surprising how little support the Show Choir program (facilities) receives after the unbelievable history of Clintons group. High priority should be placed on developing the students from a younger age to be ready to excel once in high school and also have the facility to encourage growth of the program.jessica cokerJunior High/Lovett remodels

In addition, a 6A school that only has one gym at the high school and no auxiliary type rehearsal facilities needs to be remedied as well.Space for growing enrollmentSpecial Education and interventionist are a HUGE need. Also you need to listen to your parents more instead of taking sides with the principals. You have a problem under your nose and are not listening. HIRE qualified special education teachers and staff. LISTEN to your students more.Summer hill high schoolThe 6th grades and 9th grades need new facilitiesThe high school band hall. Way too many kids crammed into a tiny band hall.To move Lovett closer to town.

DISTRICT STAFFAll buildings are packed with little spaceAreas for growth at all schools. Adequate athletic facilities for growing programs. There’s limited space for practices and weight training.

Career Complex; Pre-K; extending hallways at NS/ESCJHS RenovationsClassroom space at the elementary schools, a bigger cafeteria at Clinton Park Elementary, a bigger band hall at CHS, bigger band practice facilities at Lovett and Clinton Junior High.Clinton Junior HighExpanding existing buildings that are at a maximum capacity. Lovett needs to be renovated and re-modeled to bring it up to the standards of the other schools in the district.Expansion; renovation; new buidlingI think Clinton have a great school district.Lovett, CJHS, & Sumner HillMore classroomsMore classrooms to accommodate a growth in the student population. Class sizes need to be reduced.More parent workshopsSome of the older schools like the Junior High feel really cramped. The hallways are so smallUpdating lovettUpgrade to Lovett and Career Complex

FACULTY/STAFF CHS – CCCAddressing of overcrowding and areas where growth is limited due to space.Elementary/Addition of a pre-KLovett and Jr. HighNeed to replace aging and outdated schools (Clinton Jr. High, etc.).Safer entry ways in all buildings. Jr. High renovationMore classrooms

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON ALTERNATIVENoneFor the Alternative School, in my opinion, the greatest need is for a larger building and more staff to be able to function as we would like to. We sometimes have more students than we can comfortably accommodate.

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON HIGHA area that I have observed firsthand is the need for a stage that the high school theatre students can call their own. These students work hard to produce shows for the community and statewide competition, yet they do not have a stage here at the school. They construct sets and practice scenes in a classroom and then have to adapt that to a stage when they can reserve the use of one. The theatre program is growing and needs a place to call home.Because our population is growing and more students are joining the performing arts, there is a need for more space. The choir practices in an area that is covered in mold and floods whenever it rains. The theater group, which is growing, has no place to meet and perform. All performance groups need to have access to the required space to practice and perform.BIGGER BAND HALLClass sizesClassroom spaceClassrooms and classroom spaceClinton High School has no new classrooms added since the school was built in 1996. The school district has grown in size, and the larger classes that were at the elementary schools and junior high have now outgrown the high school. There are places on campus where expansion is possible and necessary.

Clinton High School is in need of more classrooms to accommodate student enrollment and teachers. We currently are sharing classrooms with other teachers in our content areas because we do not have enough space for each one to have their own classroom.Clinton High School needs more classrooms to accommodate current students and future growth. A new band hall and a performing arts center would also provide more opportunities for students and for district growth. The possibility of adding an arts wing to CHS to house the theatre, art, journalism, and music programs would open up several classrooms.Clinton Junior High Schools need updating.Enhanced theatre area, more classrooms, new desks, - SAFE classroomsFine arts facilities Ability to host events at a performing arts center. Adequate rehearsal and storage needs.Only one gym.Generally, we need more space for classroom instruction. As our population grows, we need to be able to maintain the appropriate student/teacher ratio for the standard of excellent instruction we have established in our districts culture.High school is over crowded and lacks the ability to keep class sizes down. There should be no reason that class have 35 students, teachers don’t have classrooms, and teachers lack desks and other furniture to keep their materials. Students are packed in like sardines which leaves little room for a teacher to move around the room.I believe that as student enrollment grows, there will need to be more space to accommodate a larger number of students.I do not believe the high school is big enough to facilitate all the students we have.I do not have enough knowledge on the other facilities to adequately answer this question.I think enrollment in career complex classes would be higher if students didnt have to take buses to go to those classes. CHS needs more meeting rooms in the office area for conferences and a facility for drama classes.I think we need more classroom space at the high school level to preserve a smaller student/teacher ratio. I also think we need a Career/Vocational Center closer to the CHS campus. However, I realize the elementary schools are using portable classrooms right now, so I think that is another area of great need!LovettMore classroom space at each level -- all schools are packed!more classroomsMore classroomsMore classrooms at the high school - we have several floaters so that teachers have to share classrooms. Moving the Career Complex to the high school. A performing arts center. Additional student bathrooms at both the east and west ends of the high school.Moving the Career Complex to CHS groundsNeed more classrooms and more teachers.Probably elementaryThe high school needs more space. Our class sizes are rather large, if we had more classrooms and more teachers it would certainly help to reduce individual class sizes. Some areas of the building need to be updated. The art room downstairs has some intense plumbing issues that need to be repaired, and the other art room is located on the math hall. That art room is not set up for art, it does not have any storage nor does it have access to a sink. It would be really nice to have both art rooms close by each other so that both would have access to the storage closets and sinks. I do realize there are probably several more pressing issues, but these are the issues that I am the most familiar with. The performing arts is the area with the biggest need. The Clinton band has outgrown their facilities and needs a larger space to operate. When all 224 9th-12th grade band students are in the biggest band hall, they are lining the walls after filling up all floor space.

Theater needs a dedicated space. Choir/lecture hall floods and has broken stairs and chairs that need attention. We need more classrooms and more classes offered to students. We need more classrooms and teachers to accommodate our growing enrollment numbers.

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON JUNIOR HIGHAll facilities are running out of room. CJHS needs updated heating and cooling system.CJHS needs more room in order to safely and adequately accommodate all students and teachers. For example-- 8th grade conferences with parents for 9th grade scheduling took place this week and the library had to be closed to all students, which tremendously affected students trying to achieve their Accelerated Reader goals. Teachers were told that there was not another space or facility that could be used for conferences.CJHSArts CenterBand FacilitiesClinton Jr HighClinton Jr. HighClinton Junior HighI think that CJHS needs to undergo extensive repairs/renovations.Junior High and LovettJunior High heating/cooling. Poor efficiency with single pane window. Large class sizes due to not enough staff but also not enough classrooms to house more staff.Refurbishment of CJHS.School and classes are not ready for growth. Classes already sit at an average of 30 students.SecuritySecurity features to ensure safety in the event of an emergencyThe area of greatest need is the Jr. High School. the roofs are leaking and I am getting water in my room that comes in under the baseboards. The Junior High is very crowded. It would be nice to add teachers which would mean we would need more space. The three middle schools (6-9th grade) are isolated and using inadequate buildings. The three middle schools are isolated from the hub of the other schools and their facilities are in run-down condition. There is a need for a new Junior High school building. There is also a need for the cheerleaders to have their own spot once basketball season starts.Updated classrooms and bathrooms

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON PARKAncillary Classes - Speech,Dyslexia, Inclusion, etc.At the elementary levels we need more classrooms, not trailers. It is good to have full buildings, but better to have room to grow. CPSD also desperately needs a Performing Arts Center.Classroom size and spaceClinton Junior High and Lovett need updatingClinton schools are rapidly growing. With the new businesses coming to town, we will continue to grow. We need to find a way to add more classrooms for the growing number of children.Foundation issues at Clinton ParkGet an experienced, knowledgeable company to fix the foundation and walls at Clinton Park. Clinton Park also needs a larger cafeteria. The one we have is beyond capacity at lunch for fire code.I think the schools area ok right now.. but there is no room for growth!More housing for staff at each school to support for dyslexic students, English language

learners and behavioral problems.MORE ROOM FOR GROWTH AND APPROPRIATE ADDED FACULTY/STAFF MEMBERSParking in front of Clinton Park needs additions for parents. Continue updates on the structure with the shifting of the building. Punch key access to more of the doors.Space! Class sizes have been lower across the last several years, which has been priceless. However, we are completely out of classrooms and have converted closets into speech rooms. We need more space in order to accommodate more students. The high school needs a bigger band hall. We have 225 plus students and they barely fit in the existing building. The program is growing every year. The Lovett car line!!There is not enough room for specials programs. The cafeteria is too small. We need a covered walkway for car ride line and a complete covered walkway at the back of the school reaching ALL hallways. We need room to grow.

FACULTY/STAFF EASTSIDEAdded space to school.bigger schoolsCareer Complex, Northside/EastsideClassroom space - The student population is continuing to grow; without additional classrooms, class sizes are growing too. Even 2-3 additional students in a class makes a big difference. We need the space to accommodate the growing number of students and the ability to hire additional faculty to meet this need.Clinton Jr. Highconcerns with parking lot repairsElementary K-5Honestly, the greatest need seems to be the sheer number of students we have within a facility. I know that numbers are different everywhere, but over 850 students moving through our hallways at Eastside is A LOT. I love the configuration of our schools, and I also know that the only way to reduce numbers is to make a change in having community schools, which I think we NEED to keep. I don't know the answer, but I do know that there are a lot of students in these buildings. Moving around is becoming more and more difficult, which may just have to be dealt with. I also know that we NEED more teaching units. It's very difficult to be successful with a group of students when it gets to the point of 25 in a classroom. This is only going to become more of a need. I also think it's a good idea to have people in place in anticipation of growth rather than at the last minute when you are in great need. It would also give us more of an opportunity to acquire QUALITY teachers.Kindergarten and Early Childhood space/ room for new students in the early grades.Lovett and Sumner Hill building renovationsMore classroomsMore classrooms and more teachers to get class size down even more.More classrooms for smaller class size.More classrooms so we can have smaller sizes.More classrooms.More parking spacesN/ANew facilities for Clinton ParkSchool parking lot paving.Space is needed for schools moved into trailers.

Parking improvements - quality of current lots and more parking lots.Space. The facilities are wonderful, but Im not sure that they are large enough to

accommodate all of the students we serve. It would be great to add on even more classrooms so that all teachers could teach inside the building instead of in trailers. The Jr. High- all of it.The junior high campuses is in great need of updating.Traffic flow with three schools on Arrow Drive.Updating older structures and additions to hold future growthVistor parking at Northside - EastsideWe are quickly outgrowing our schools. We need to build on to the schools and make more classrooms.WE NEED MORE CLASSROOMS ADDED ONTO EXISTING HALLWAYS.We need to have classrooms instead of portables. The portables are not safe for many reasons - weather and security being the main reasons. Also, travel time from school to portables and back loses instructional time for those teaching gifted.

FACULTY/STAFF LOVETTBathrooms especially at Lovett, more room for students as well as more teachers (class sizes are too large!)Bigger school for Lovett or move 6th grade to another school.Class sizes and room sizesclassroom size too largeLovett Elem needs a 6th team of teachers - class sizes are getting too big. We also dont have a teachers lounge.Lovett needs more classrooms. Restrooms need to be updated. Lovett needs a separate car rider lane. Lovett needs a new sound system.More classrooms and teachers to accommodate the overflow of students in the very near future.New school buildings and more teachers to limit classroom size teacher/student ratio.Updated restrooms at Lovett and a new building for future growth. We need a wider driveway into the school and more parking. Teacher cars alone fill the lot.

FACULTY/STAFF NORTHSIDEAdditional classrooms at Northside! Additional security locks added to doors leading into the school from the Northside office.

Other facilities need main entry ways structured so that everyone that enters must go through the office area for security purposes. Exterior doors need to lock after school starts for security.Clinton Jr. High, Lovett Elementary, and Sumner Hill Jr. High facilities need updating.Considering the influx of new students it seems we need larger buildings/more classrooms. We have teachers in closets. Its cozy, but its still a closet.I feel like making sure that students are comfortable in their physical environment of the schools is one of the greatest needs currently. Physical environment plays a huge role in student achievement.I think Northside is adequate for current enrollment, but not for future growth. I think that there needs to be more parking in the front of Northside for the parents. I feel come parents dont attend functions because of the parking issues.Jr. High, Lovett, NorthsideMore classrooms and more teaching positions due to the continual growth of our district.More classrooms.Parking lots behind schools.Room for the continued trend of growth is the greatest need in my opinion.small group situations - Accent, Intervention, SPED, therapists need more spaces

Parking for Clinton ParkNot prepared for growth of tire plantNeed to add classrooms for K-5 schools. Hire more teachers. Be prepared for Clinton’s anticipated future growth. Also, can we PLEASE implement a recycling program?!N/AMore permanent classrooms and athletic/PE facilitiesLovett needs new sound system and more classrooms.Lovett elementary needs to be updated and facility brought up to the level of all our other elementary schoolsLovettLarger or more building space to accommodate the increasing number of students enrolling in the district. Especially for the junior high school I think.Larger cubby space for students and possible class sizes.Ive heard Lovett and Sumner Hill needs upgrades. My experience with Clinton Park, Northside, & Eastside are favorable. Although we could definitely use more parking at the elementary schools along Arrow Drive as well as sidewalks from Arrow Dr to the Northside and Eastside entrances. It is flat out dangerous to walk alongside the road when there is a lot of traffic.I’m not very familiar with upper grade fascilities but I suspect some of them are older and need updating, as we did with the lower schools. I also hate having arts/music/ACCENT in trailers. We outgrew those new buildings too quickly. That needs to be a consideration before designing a new space. We aren’t getting smaller.I feel the lower grades are bursting at the seams. However, the oldest schools need to be addressed. Lovett has repair issues, also size issue , and the need for lockers is imperative.I believe the child should be taught and nothe allowed to use calculators in the classroom.Having assistant teachers in all elementary schoolsFine arts performance centerEast side needs a new principalDrop off/pick up lines, especially at Clinton park, but also northsideCPS ranks 1 overall from academics to parent involvementsCJHS is criticalCarline management with all the schools being on the same street (esp. Cynthia drive that is taken over by the carline for Clinton Park everyday) & new Junior High. (I have never seen Lovett or the 9th grade school.)Building more classrooms to get rid of trailers/portables. I am very concerned about my kids having to travel daily to a class outside. Safety is an issue. Weather could be bad and they would be in a trailer. Also, safety with a person that could do them harm is an issue. Anyone could be waiting outside by the trailers to harm students. This should be at the forefront for administration and the district.Being able to expand the buildings as neededBand hall at LovettSwimming pool and larger band hall at high schoolband hallAs to the size and structure question I dont feel that I know enough to answer that question. I know that churches sometimes seek expert opinions for projected growth. I would seek out expert projections to determine my answer.Anytime a child has to go to an "out" building, like a trailer, for a class, that facility as a whole needs attention, be it upgrading to a larger size or reconfiguration. Age of some of the facilities needs to be addressed as well.Accent facilities and PARKING

Classrooms space and park lot spaceClassrooms sizes are too bigClassrooms at Eastside and Clinton Park. Shouldn’t have to have class in modulates as it brings safety concernsClassroom spaceClass size is borderline too many. In order to address individual needs of the children, class size should be reduced. When classes are too big, teachers may use one broad stroke to teach a lesson, but kids learn in different ways. Also, the grandeur of Clinton Park, Northside/Eastside, and the high school do not match Lovett, Sumner Hill, or the middle school. I heard that CCA has in influx of enrollees in 7th grade. Curious as to the reason.Band facilitiesA better way to teach reading with goals for each grade level

PARENT EASTSIDEWe need a performing arts center. We need a fine arts center. One that could adequately house the band and it’s equipment. To be thoroughly taught Cursive handwriting. To devote MUCH more time to current events. To have REAL school counselors. Like there used to be in schools. Ones where children can have total anonymity to discuss concerns without fear information would be turned in to DHS. We need Home economics, life skills classes. We need pressures from far, far too many standardized tests removed and curriculums that incorporate Language, Math, Social Studies, Science with methods to use time wisely to complete classroom and homework. The junior high is overcrowded and students are not able to be supervised appropriately. The high school band needs a bigger facility!!!The drive through and parking at Lovett. The district should build a bigger band hall at CHS so that the students will be more apt to thrive in preparing for competitions and performances. The band halls are so tiny considering how many students are in the program. The band is growing and the students are dedicated and hardworking. They even seem to have run out of space to put all the trophies.Several facilities have need, including a career development center for skills-based training (automotive, robotics, woodworking/shop and construction). Additionally, structural foundations need to be completely stabilized sufficient for the next 15~20 years. The visitor parking lot (across the street from the school) should be paved to help during football games.room for growth - weve already added trailers to CP, NS & ESPerforming Arts. PARENT CLINTON HIGHWe need a fine arts center. All school buildings (except for Northside/Eastside) were not designed for future growth. When the current Jr High facility was the high school, and plans were being designed for the high school (early 1990s), it does not appear that plans for future growth in the performing arts (choirs, bands, etc.) was thoroughly researched.

For example, the auditoriums at both the current junior high and high school (stage, seating, sound system, backstage) are essentially the same size and quality. The main reason why Attaché does not host a competition at the high school is because of limited space in the current facility. For the past 15 years, Attaché has hosted Show Choir Nationals in Nashville, TN (Grand Ole Opry). The MHSAA State Choir Festival and State Band Festival could be hosted by Clinton High School also, if the auditorium facility was the larger. Think of all the revenue that could be coming to Clinton if a competition or festival could be hosted at its own facility.Another example of poor planning for future growth in the performing arts is the current band hall at the high school. For the 2017-18 school year, there are approximately 390 students enrolled in the Clinton Band program (grades 7-12), of which 218 are students in grades 9-12. The attrition rate for band students from beginner (6th grade) to high school (9th-12th) has been less than 10%. In fact, over the last three years, the number of students in the band program (grades 7-12) has increased by 20% (7% each year). The band hall at the junior high is actually the most ideal design (high ceilings, nice flooring, large practice rooms, storage, and staff offices). The square footage of the entire band hall facility is approximately the same size as the junior high band hall. The location of the CHS band hall is at the apex of a hill, which makes it extremely difficult to transport equipment to/from the Arrow Field for rehearsals and football games during the fall, and for transporting equipment to/from competitions.

The CHS band hall is also in need of many repairs (all of which have been noted by previous and current band directors). The list is numerous... missing ceiling tiles, mold on walls and ceilings, worn out carpet, doors that do not work properly, cobwebs hanging from ceilings. The Clinton Band Boosters (a non-profit organization created to support the band program) has done what it can to make the band hall as adequate as possible for the students, but it is not their job to maintain the facility. The current mold situation (since July 2017) is one that has costed the Band Boosters thousands of dollars (uniform cleanings, damaged equipment, etc.), and it has still not been addressed by school administrators.

The Clinton Band program, Attaché Show Choir, and the Clinton High School Choirs have

HS tennis courts are in terrible shape and baseball field is in dire need of upkeep. The way a baseball field is used requires fencing to be repaired or replaced every few years or so and the playing surface is on a huge vain of yahoo clay which makes for a very hilly playing surface. It is also a shame that we have basically had the #1 show choir in the nation for probably 20 plus years and we don’t have a performing arts facility! I think it lacks the facilities it has 2 bathroom stalls for 200 plus kids and or directors. Also it’s very vague that during marching band season you have people changing out in the open because bathrooms are to small to fit 10 females. Also I feel we need a percussion room and Guard room and instrument room alongside the 2 bands halls we already have. I also thing that we need 2 gyms sized rooms for indoor percussion and guards to practice and not have to fight for which gym and we can use and do it all in the sanction of one location, the high school. These demand are pretty ambitions but as a student of the band and color Guard I think this would benefit all sections of the band and adds more space. our highly innovated technology for all things Band and how big our Band is how how much our community supports the Clinton Band. I really hope you consider these things. Sincerely Jadyn NashThe Clinton High School Swim team, and the Clinton Theater departmentThe greatest need is for a bigger high school. There has been immense student growth and the hallways are horribly crowded during class changes. This poses a danger for the entire student body. A bigger high school will accommodate for future student growth and will eventually increase student achievement, because students are in a new facility. Also, adding a new arts wing for the choir, band, theatre, and Attache would help foster a new appreciation for all the arts opportunities the district offers. Additionally, a performing arts center on campus would be an awesome addition as well. With a performing arts center, the arts has a space to perform and to accommodate all Clintonians. The theatre arts department could use a facility which would allow the department to grow and be better to have more participants.updated restroom facilities

STUDENT LOVETTLeting people talk after classI feel like kids should have good education of course, but we also need to have extra activities to do for part of the day at school and after school such as ambassadors.Lovett, because it is the oldest and most worn down.We need to improve the schools health by cleaning and taking care of it.Lovett and the jouir highI think Lovett Elementary is the area of the greatest need because the downstairs flood by the stairs when it rains, need better bathrooms, and upstairs hear really, REALLY loud rain. It is so loud that they have to yell. The bathrooms.LanguageMore vigilant about bullyingBathroomsNothingI think Lovett Elementary, because the bathrooms are very poor. For example the faucets do not work very well.....Also lovett elementary is the oldest in the district, which means dust I think (to be honest ) we need better cleaning..

STUDENT SUMNER HILLThe artsThe Clinton Band needs a bigger band hall to support all of the students and other band memebers. The band needs a bigger band room hands down. We also need more bathrooms on the band side. The band hallThe high school band hall needs to be expanded due to all of the students and the band constantly growingThe Clinton High School band hall needs to be expanded.

PARENT SUMNER HILL JUNIOR HIGHWe are an excellent district!Very supportive of the students and proud of their accomplishments. Teachers take an interest in my children and go out of their way to help when needed. This school has done well with black/white ratio for students to teacher. These questions are very general. As the parent of a special education student, some teachers are more concerned with my child than others. I had a meeting with the school recently and his principal, special education teacher and ONE classroom teacher attended. Thats all. Where was everyone else? The amount of homework in Clinton is ridiculous. There are people who move here from out of state who say they have never seen so much homework. What is going on in class? There is a distinct difference in my childs learning in the classes where there is TEACHING/LECTURING and "guided note taking" etc. My child doesnt even study when he is taught and lectured to. There are times when I think that teachers should go back to the old fashioned type of teaching at least some percentage of the time because if you have a class of 25 students, there are going to be some who learn audibly, some who learn visually and some who learn by the hands on method. The elementary schools are strong. The desire to be the best in the state of MS.Does most things right. Just need some tweaking.CPSD is very supportive of new teachers; CPSD has strong community support, the staff and faculty are very dedicated.CPSD is the absolute best, in my opinion! Our teachers are working hard every day to ensure that our children are ready to go to college, or to go into the work force. I think the genuine care and concern our teachers and administrators have for our students is part of what makes CPSD awesome! One area where I feel CPSD excels is in access to technology. In the world today, everyone uses technology in some way in their job, and it is important that our students get a good foundation in those systems and programs. I also feel that our schools keep standards very high for each and every student, in each and every aspect of their education, be it academics, arts, or athletics. If the student isnt hitting the bar, the teachers dont lower the bar, they find a way to raise the student! Excellence truly is the only option here!CPSD does many things extraordinarily well. My son is a senior and his educational experience has been superior. I’m very comfortable with his education and my daughter’s education. They have support and help at school from teachers and though my husband and I support them, the extra mile that many teachers go to help my kids is comforting.Clinton supplies a very high quality education overall with rare exceptions.

I am happy with the overall attitude and effort our school district makes for our students to excel but we must do more. I think the district works hard to be the best and expects the most from students which is great. I feel like the district works hard to educate every child no matter their race, social status or mental capacity. The teachers at CHS, especially Rita Harrington was very concerned about my son graduating. With his no care attitude as a Freshman and Sophomore, she stood firm with him and treated him as I do. I am also pleased with the school's involvement in students continuing their education.Hires qualified teachers and admin staffFaculty supportexpectation of excellence instead of just adequacy; equal access to district resources and servicesExcellent variety of classes offeredEverythingEnthusiasm of teachers toward their studentsEducational experiences/ extracurricular activitiesCPSD is the absolute best, in my opinion! Excellence truly is the only option here!CPSD is an excellent school district. The education my kids have received is excellentCPSD has a heart for the student body, teachers and community.CPSD does many things extraordinarily well. My son is a senior and his educational experience has been superior. I’m very comfortable with his education and my daughter’s education. They have support and help at school from teachers and though my husband and I support them, the extra mile that many teachers go to help my kids is comforting.CPSD does a great job communicating events through e-mail and social media most of the time.Clinton supplies a very high quality education overall with rare exceptions.Clinton Public School does a lot of things that is right. I could not see myself in any other school district. GO ARROWS!!!Clinton is wonderful about making sure the overall needs of the students are met.Cares for students and provides various options for engagement and involvementBoth the Clinton Public School District (CPSD) and schools (Clinton High and Eastside Elementary) of concern do well with providing an academic environment that focuses on the basics of learning in a structured environment. Facilities adequacy, faculty and staff engagement and community/parental involvement are pillars to the attractiveness of the District.Academics, Parent communication, great teachers

resources.Clinton does an excellent job at getting the best out of the students. Clinton students are held to a higher standard than other schools. The pressure can sometimes be a bit much but personally, I appreciate the extra push to do better. The district also has such an important role in the community which allows us to have a great reputation in the state.Clinton has a great school system a very good curriculum that prepares students for not only college but the real world.Eh...... nothingExtra Curricular Sports are well taken care of.Helps students excel in their school studies as well as activities.I believe that CHS does a good job of preparing students for college but I am not in college yet so I can not make that statement entirely true.I feel as though our school district excels in a range of academics. There are different levels open to students who are able to work at their own pace.involves all students in everythingMany of the Honors and AP teachers really deeply care about what theyre teaching, and work very hard to make sure students understand the material, and have a learning experience that suits them. Most teachers actually care about their most of their students. They provide personal support when they see the need for it.My school district has great spirit and loves the community. There are activities involved at every school and outside of the school district. My teachers are amazing and work extremely hard to make sure we are applying ourselves as much as we can while learning as much as we are capable of.N/ASafety.Teachers in this district are amazing! Access to technology makes the students life so much easier and accessible.technology and teachingTesting. The actual academics is decent. The quality of staff is amazing. The school district does a very good job in almost every other way possible. I love this school district because of its ability to maintain top status as an educational powerhouse in Mississippi while also improving its athletics and career complex facilities. The school does very well with including everyone and making clubs to support everyone. They do well in making sure we study and have lots of responsibility

STUDENT CLINTON JUNIOR HIGHOur teachers are awesome and fun to learn with! Mrs. Murphy A+!! Really supportive.

STUDENT LOVETTGives instructions.I feel like the school has some fun activities and has good education, but sometimes i feel we dont do very many fun activities. It does not the perfect school but if we help take care of the school it would be much better.Let the students go outsideMost everythingMy school district does well by providing many musical activities, like, band, strings, arise, and music class.Teaches and cooperates with students behavior wellThe teacher are very kind. They do well of helping you with your needs.. problems, they can answer important questionsThey teach very well and actually give real life examples about what we are learning.

STUDENT SUMNER HILLOur school district does a great job supporting all the children in many activities. I feel that the Clinton Band needs a bigger band hall to fit all the students inside. Our school district excels in letting students use computers, as well as an individualized learning plan.teaching

[O2] Please comment about improvements your school or district should make.COMMUNITYAdd classrooms to allow for smaller classroomsBuild a new school for the students in grades 4 and 5.Clinton Junior High needs updatesDo not teach common core!Teach cursive writing !Funding for fine arts and a separate fine arts or band building is much needed at the high school as well as at Lovett Elementary.I think that the school district can make improvements on ways that allow the students more creative freedom. While it is true that this district does offer a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities for a student to choose from, I think that there can be more options available during actual school hours, especially within the physical education and fine arts departments, and especially for the higher grades like jr. high and above.I’m not sure why the questions about teachers are included in the survey as it opens the door for any malcontent to voice an independent agenda and skew the results. Clearly this survey is about building new facilities, which I fully support, since teachers can’t be funded with bond issue monies. Some of the questions muddy the issue at hand.Im still surprised that when the "new" high school was built, it was constructed with a smaller auditorium that at the old High School (which is now Junior High School building). The Show Choir program has been quite dominant over the years and it seems like the support of the administration (via facilities) has been lacking in comparison. I have attended other show choir events and the economic impact of such an event should be considered.jessica cokerListen to your students more.Hire more qualified special education teachers and assistantsListen to your parents more-they know their children and children tell the truthMake more accommodations for the students needs instead of punishing them for a medical condition they cannot control when the teacher yells at themMake students that are in intervention not feel they are excludedReplace Ms. Hamil-she is a terrible principal who treats the students and parents with a authoritative tone instead of listening. some arent able to participate. I believe there is way to much travel for activities out of state and the kids miss school. Longer lunches. I feel the kids are out way too long at holiday break, that week after New Years should be redone to a school work week. List could go on and on. Traffic control on Arrow at the elementary schools.Should have more classrooms, not have to use trailers. Be careful about the importance placed on test. If a child is doing their best, they should not be made to feel inferior.Special education supportThe dress code is a little strict. I think they should consider uniforms. The high school desperately needs a bigger band hall to fit all of the kids and the rates for students to participate in the band/ indoor groups need to have funding to make it more accessible to students who are poor.Too much time spent on standardized testing. Too much time spent "teaching for the test". When my children were enrolled at CPSD the entire last nine weeks was spent reviewing and preparing for "the test". They are now at private school where they are taught critical thinking skills that will benefit them in the real world. The teachers at CPSD were fantastic but burnt out from all the testing and test prep. CPSD has the means, the leadership, and the forward thinking to break from this spinning hamster wheel! We need a larger band building.

DISTRICT STAFFA girls locker room is needed at the high school.CJHS requires major renovations.Dedicated facilities for all activities (area for sports, area for band, area for choir, area for Attache, area for theatre, etc) Performing Arts ComplexFacilities - we need to build more classrooms and activity spaces.I think assistants should get paid during holidays.I would like to see media centers and cafeterias enlarged. We need room for growth at each school. We need more space for athletics opportunities in the form of practice areas, locker rooms, and weight rooms.Improving the appearance of some of the older schoolsOffer more diverse programs such as JROTC, Citizen Leadership, Debate, Life Skills, etc. We have a wonderful foundation of fundamentals but these kids need to be prepared to understand the world as a whole. I want my child educated academically and have life skills. Some type of renovation to the junior high. That building has a way of changing ones mood from happy and upbeat to sad and depressingWe have several older buildings that need to be improved or replaced.Remove text books and use ebooks, etc. through the Apple devices we offer.Be competitive in pay for employees/teachers so we can keep the good people in our district/state.We work really well with our top performing kids and our low performing kids. We give them numerous opportunities to grow. However, we dont need to forget about those kids in the middle.

FACULTY/STAFF CHS CCCNeed more security at each school. Armed police officers, not armed teachers.Related to the above, we need nursing staff at each school. Also, having one nurse at the central office is not useful for day to day needs.Need to build new schools to replace the aging schools. These schools do not enhance our community appearance which impacts our ability to attract actual taxpayers. Our school needs a pre-K class.

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON ALTERNATIVEMore steps in the discipline process

Clinton High School needs to make some improvements in safety in our building. I think it would be too easy for an intruder to come into our building. We also need to improve the physical education program. Right now, the students sit in the bleachers and learn very little in the way of physical eduction. I would like to see a curriculum developed in that area.Even though the facilities at Clinton High School are well maintained, we are in desperate need of new desks- many are broken and we have to search and steal in order to have enough to go around!Helping ESL students, especially students with really low English proficiencyI think we need to pay attention to some of the physical parts of our district. CHS needs some expansion. If Arrow Field is going to compete with similar facilities around the state, we need improves to our scoreboard (jumbotron) and press box.I would like to see front doors of schools locked so that random individuals can’t just walk in. It’s scary knowing that these doors stay unlockedIf we are going to continue with the 1:1 program, we have to make sure that technology is able to stand up to the capacity. Trying to show an instructional video or model project strategies for my students and not having the Internet or AirPlay work the way that I need it becomes very frustrating and completely takes away from instruction preparation.Improvements might be made in the area of more support for some of the less publicized groups such as the choirs outside of Attache. The addition of a mental health counselor at the 7-12 grade level as the ones we have are more focused on career and college counseling. Professional development aimed at student mental health. More electives offered.Need a fine arts complexNeed facilities for activities. Our theatre students need a stage.smaller class sizes, larger high school to accommodate studentsAlso, desks to meet the needs of larger students, and teachers need to be aware of this size need to help accommodateTechnology needs to adapt and prevent students from accessing applications that cause much more off-task behavior. The school district should look at the possibility of adding an arts wing to CHS along with a performing arts center.Vertical alignment and cooperation from school to school; policies and expectations greatly differ from building to buildingWe all know that some of our campuses are older than others, and some parts of our buildings are smaller than others. As a community, we need to make sure the places our students are attending for their education are 100% adequate to support the learning environment. The band hall at Clinton High School has been outgrown. It is near impossible for them to fit 224 students, along with parents, directors, and staff, in there at one time. The ceilings are too low to have a Color Guard rehearsal inside, so on days that in rains, it is difficult to find a location to rehearse. The only place they fit with ceilings high enough is the gym, and the facility is shared by a number of different activities. It takes very strategic planning to figure out when the gym is available when it is the only facility that can accommodate 50 members with high ceilings.

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON JUNIOR HIGHClass sizesCould be better in communication. Questions have been submitted to advisory meetings that have not been answered.Fair pay raisesI think we need more teachers in the building so that our teacher to student ratio would be better. I think this would help with achievement of our students as well as behavior.Scheduling could be improved at CJHS. Many students travel from class to class with the same group. This causes major distractions because a lot of times, all the students are put

Page 39: €¦  · Web view2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses. The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School

in classes with their closest friends. Many times, a students schedule is changed and the teacher has no warning of it. This puts extra stress on the teacher to find the students previous teacher and transfer grades in PowerSchool. Another improvement that could be made is in the area of state tested subjects. I teach all regular English classes that are blocked. I am bombarded with charts, spreadsheets, and other data from previous benchmark and state test scores that I have to analyze and complete extra paperwork for. This is nearly impossible to successfully do because I only get a 50 minute planning period and a lot of that time is spent getting work to students in ISS and maintaining contact with parents by calling them and touching base on their childs behavior. When teaching for almost a complete two hours at a time, I feel the work load of grading essays, analyzing data, parent conferences, participating in various TST meetings, etc. during "break" times is not manageable within an 8 hour school day. Professional development opportunities are limited because of substitute issues, and if we are to be placing heavy emphasis on test scores, I do not feel adequately trained for the analyzation of score data. I think other departments that are not state tested could significantly help the departments who are by integrating test taking methods we use in their own daily instruction to alleviate some of the pressure that falls on teachers whose subject is state tested.Smaller class sizesThe district should consider rebuilding a new Jr. High facility in the same location. Our building is old. The patch work and money that has gone into the facility is not lasting. I feel that the money is being wasted.Too much instructional time is being missed. We have lots of technology for students to use, but we need to invest in more programs that make use of the technology. We need access to online subscription sites.

FACULTY/STAFF CLINTON PARKConsistent consequences for behavior (Some students break a rule and are suspended, as they should be. Other students break the same rule and they get a "slap on the hand." We need consequency with our behavior consequences. The lack of consistancy is unfair to the students and staff.Due to foundational issues, our school has many cracks.Everyone always has room for improvement. Here are a few areas of improvement that are needed. We need to improve on a more solid disciplinary program and stick to it - especially at my school. It also needs to be consistent. We need to improve on communication and following up with communication. We need to improve our daily class schedules - my schedule at school is not feasible for what is required in a day and how it should be laid out.Expand the front parking for parents at Clinton Park. Extend the awing for students in front for rainy days.Having more space for ancillary classes would be an asset to learning for our students.I believe we could do better on teacher assistant retention by increasing pay so that we don’t feel compelled to have second and third jobs. I believe having teachers assistant salaried will also increase retention. The biggest issue I see is that our high school performing arts groups have outgrown the facilities. The band hall is way too small for our 225 plus member band. They do not have the space to fit all band members into one room to practice. They do most of the practicing outside and it becomes a major problem in rainy weather. If the whole band needs to practice inside, then they have to go to the gym and work around the schedules of indoor sports such as basketball or volleyball. Within the band, we have multiple groups such as indoor percussion, winter guard, and various ensembles. They are all needing space to practice and we dont have the room for all of them.Visible administration - staff members, students, and parents need to see the school and district administration throughout the schools. This helps all feel supported, respected, and accountable. Our administration mostly stays in the office. They enjoy an hour lunch in the conference room daily where no office staff is visible at the front desk.

Page 40: €¦  · Web view2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses. The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School

Administration is unapproachable during this time if needed for student support. This has been a very big source of contention among staff members and is a very bad look for our school as many parents and visitors enter the building through the office during this time.

FACULTY/STAFF EASTSIDEAgain, get rid of the portables...It just doesnt look good, not safe, and personally, tax dollars should be used to fix this issue. We are better than having trailers for instructional facilities.I feel like some of our teachers could improve on showing respect to students and not being so harsh at times. Kindness goes a long way!I lose a significant amount of instructional time traveling from the main building to the trailers each period. These classrooms really need to be inside the building or closer to the regular classrooms.I wish CPSD had the ability to put a nurse and a Resource/Police officer on each campus as do other schools in the state.I would like my school/district to provide training and information about how to help my ELL students be successful.I would like to have more opportunity to teach the core subjects math, science, and language rather than having computer science as one of our classes in fifth grade. Computer science is a great class, and it would be a great class as an activity for our students. With computer science being one our four classes in fifth grade, our classes in fifth grade are very short, and we need more time to do more in depth activities with our students that promote higher thinking skills in our classes.Im satisfied.Improvements that could be made would be to bring in a developed writing program from K-6. That way, everyone would be teaching writing the same way and students would truly develop a strong base for writing.Just a comment about the roads for schools on Arrow Dr. They need to be repaved.N/ASmaller Class SizesThe only issue I see is the lack of room and teachers to accommodate the increasing number of students.Visitor parkingWe need more visitor parking!!!

FACULTY/STAFF LOVETTLovett is in need of more space for classrooms and more teachers because classes are so crowded.Lovett needs an area for cars to park in the front of the school rather than on Northside Drive. A possible circular area could be added at the entrance to the school.Students need a covered pavilion, playground and recreational area with picnic tables.Need more and newer facilities. Lovett and the Junior High need major renovations and improvements.RTI students need more. I am given little to no information from the intervention teachers on what is going on in intervention or progress that is being made. I am not told of any specific goals or how I could support goals in the classroom.School facility improvements (rebuilding) and adding teacher units to schools where the teacher/student ratio is high.We do not have opportunities or give opportunities to allow our students to take field trips to enhance their learning of the outside the building. We only have yearbook club and choir. I feel like we should have more student-centered activities at Lovett. It would make it more fun for the kids. To go from Eastside to Lovett, it is a drastic change for our students every year.

By law, our students should be receiving time out side, and we dont give them enough.

Page 41: €¦  · Web view2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses. The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School

We also need another way to enter/exit at Lovett. Our driveway has been complained about for several years. If we ever have a major issue, we would NOT be able to have means of assistance get in and out quickly.

FACULTY/STAFF NORTHSIDEDiscipline and being more consistent and following through with students that are on step 5 and step 6 by the end or middle of the week.I think a better performing arts faculty that all schools could use would be a way to bring in revenue and allow access to various school groups. At JA they cleared $70,000 when they housed a state Show Choir Competition! That is their fundraiser each year!I think that students should NOT be in trailers. With people these days, I think it is very unsafe to have students walking near the woods were it is easy for people to hide. Students would be in a safer environment if all of the classes were in the building where it would be easy to lock down and get help in case of an emergency.I would love more professional development time incorporated.Larger facilities for growth.

Safer facilitiesLibrary media centers need more funding - collection is dated and too small.

We should not have trailers for instruction.

Faculty parking lots should be paved.

More public parking is needed at Northside/Eastside.

When a building addition is done at Northside, additional restrooms need to be included.Make room for growth of the schools.More room and teacher units for smaller size classes.

FACULTY/STAFF SUMNER HILLI would like to see the HVAC in proper working order. The thermostat seems to be opposite. The heat begins to run once the room has warmed, not before. The school district can improve on teacher retention by allowing more opportunities for professional advancement. We need to find the right balance between technology and hands-on learning. Students lose out if we use one without the other.

PARENT CLINTON PARKTraffic. Adding a lane on cynthia to keep parents out of the grass for CP. A crossing guard that will not just let the turn lane go into the school in the mornings. The guard will let 15 to 20 cars in and then only let 4 or 7 in from the lane in front of CP. Its very frustrating. The junior high needs more teachers that are teaching and caring about there students.Offer an after school program for younger gradesIncorporating foreign language exposure/immersion beginning in early elementaryCoding and robotics lab starting in early elementaryCommunication on how 1:1 devices are used throughout the dayImprove parent/ staff contact. Teachers seem to act as if parents don’t necessarily ever need to speak with them about issues unless on conference days. There is a feeling of being rushed along sometimesI understand the cost effectiveness of going "paperless" but I feel like I sometimes miss out on things because I missed an email or didnt check the website. Also, email address should be more readily available on each school website for teachers and administrators.I feel that if email is going to be used as a means of communication between teachers and parents then the teachers need to access the email and learn how to use itI do think that all schools should provide a locker ( after cubbies) for students. The backpacks are very heavy and this is a health issue for some. To carry around that much

Page 42: €¦  · Web view2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses. The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School

weight upon your back on each hour- most adults would not desire or be able to for an entire day.I believe there could be improvement in communication about gifted and talented protocols for those that are interested in having their scholar tested for the program.I am white but have noticed other white teachers (one specific Kindergarten teacher) already label other students in my childs class as "bad" or "failing" and these students all happen to be minority students. I have seen teachers aides get in students faces at Clinton Park lunch and yell at them. (My own daughter has told me the cafeteria worker yelled at her for not getting her lunch right the first time she bought it.) I am particularly concerned about AR levels and forcing students who excel to read way above grade level. (I had a second grader who was reading at a 6th grade level at the end of last year, and I addressed content concerns with both her teacher and the administration. The answer I got was "this is what they have to do to keep improving their scores." Because of her reading level, MyOn books that showed up were about puberty, menstruation and HIV/AIDS. I didnt feel like my 7 year old should even have access to those books, let alone be reading them. My student was in ACCENT, and loved that but in her regular classroom, as soon as she completed her work, she was told either to help/tutor other students or play on her ipad. So she spent a lot of the day not even learning. (I am homeschooling her this year for this reason even though we still live in CPSD, and I have another child currently attending a CPSD school.)Foreign language instruction in lower elementary! Please find a way to introduce our kids to language earlier. Kindergarten would be ideal.Eastside Elementarys teachers do not communicate with parents. I am often unaware of what takes place at school or what is expected of my child. When I do attempt to communicate, I do not receive responses.Deal with outbuildings, as they are not optimal. Also widening arrow drive to accommodate school traffic more efficiently as well as the subdivisions that are located on the road.Communication is key! Teachers need to reach out more to parents...example- my daughter was sent home after a cheer injury which resulted in a ER trip when a simple call would have resulted in a office visit to her family doctor. example- my sons behavior chart doesnt explain what happened that put him on "blue" I would like to see a short note from the teacher explaining the events. that way I can decide as the parent if my child was defending himself from bullies. This is a big issue in CPDS and it needs to be addressed. Our kids dont feel safe. example- my daughter is bullied in cheer all the time but the sponsors dont say anything. And just think I paid for her to be treated this way.

Also need to look at why sports cost the parents so much when we are already paying for these schools - example over $1,000 for cheer! and most of that money is spent on outfits to practice in at school, really! why isnt black shorts and a red top not enough, 5 outfits and bows wasted! that money could have went to something else, like to the football players, maybe new helmets or something...after all the cheerleaders are there to support the team - that would have been a better use of my money.

I could go on but I will get off my soap box.At this time, I have no comments. I’m enjoying this educational experience with my child. As the kids get older P.E. seems to be a lot harder. I feel P.E. Is extremely important but more time should be spent doing activities or games that get the kids moving and learning to enjoy exercise NOT doing burpees, or squats or any high impact activities for most of the time and then if completed getting to do a short game at the end. Some kids capabilities are different. I don’t like that my child doesn’t feel good enough when it comes to P.E.

PARENT NORTHSIDEThe junior high should begin pre-AP and pre-IB courses. Students should have the option

Page 43: €¦  · Web view2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses. The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School

to begin AP courses in the 9th grade as other global high schools. An IB program should be created. Clinton is fine for Mississippi. Yet, the vision should be globally aligned.Reading is the cornerstone of learning. Its vital to be a strong reader early in your academic career. MORE children should be identified in first grade and given the additional assistance they need. The top will excel. The ones that struggle with grades will receive help. But its much more difficult to identify those in the middle. My child was ON WATCH in first grade and fell to the INTERVENTION category on the Star test in second. But since her grades were barely passing, she was not allowed in the Intervention Reading program. I asked on many occasions. Our private tutor suggested dyslexia testing. She does have dyslexia, and I was told she would have hit a wall by 3rd grade. The school, with years of experience with children this age, should do a better job of identifying these kids and building them up.Please phase out Common Core and incorporate a curriculum that is age appropriate for each grade level. My child has fallen behind and is struggling because the work that they do is beyond their cognitive development and mental capacity. They are demanding too much too soon. This causes low self-esteem and lack of confidence in her work. She has never received honor roll and she is a very hard worker. I just dont feel that a child her age should be as stressed about school as she is. I hope that the school district visits this concern. So many parents are dealing with this issue.Parking for parents at Northside and Eastside, I would think with the land in front of the schools, you could use it for a parking lotOur band halls are too small, period. Way too small. Also, my daughter, who is academically gifted, often complains that Science and History should be offered as Honors classes in seventh and eighth grades, just as Math and English are. She is often frustrated because she doesn’t feel challenged in Science and History, and in addition, those are the only two classes she has that have behavior problem issues.Need to work on math. Teaching multiple learning styles early on and for only short periods of time has not stuck well. It seems mine can’t recall what they learned the year before and therefore can’t build off of it.Need new building for Lovett and better road conditions for car rider line. Stronger instruction for students with disabilities in reading.Need more firewall on iPads and MacBook. Social media is an issue for children. It should be blocked from being able to access on laptops so that when parents take away tablets and devices they can’t just pull it up on school devices. This can easily be maintained and blocked.Lovett needs a new school. The car rider line is unsafe.

The Jr high should start a girls soccer team.I’ve not been impressed with the focus on reading groups, the way they move so quickly with math in elementary no reteaching or poor tennis coachI think too much work/homework is crammed into one week & makes my child like school less. Kids only can retain so much, & me personally, have had trouble with both my kids getting overwhelmed with all the work/reading, math.....etc.I think the school should do a better job by keeping all parents aware of whats going on with the children grades. I also think parents should be able to peep in on the children and teachers from time to time.I feel like our math program for regular math classes is lacking. It’s not a strong program. I feel like I order to get the strong teachers you must be in advanced classes.Foreign language instruction in lower elementary! Please find a way to introduce our kids to language earlier. Kindergarten would be ideal.Class sizes could be smaller.Being aware that ADHD, is real. And the children or parents didnt choose the illness!

PARENT EASTSIDEwould like to see bigger band building/ facility. High school Band numbers are growing,

Page 44: €¦  · Web view2018 Clinton Public School District Comprehensive Needs Assessment Open Responses. The following responses to open-ended questions on the 2018 Clinton Public School

and the children are almost on top of each other as they try to squeeze into band hall and practice rooms. We need a performing arts building! The kids have become numbers. Their individuality is not only lost but discouraged. If a student is too much of an individual, they are excluded by staff. There are so many kids to staff member that if the staff cannot lump them together, then they cannot handle them. The schools need more funding to fix the teacher student ratio, I understand that. But after encountering many of the teachers in the district with my children, I can say that the ones who saw my kids as individuals...less than 5. And I have sent one child all the way through the schools and have two more coming through. It is disappointing that we cannot do better than giving them a institutional, test based education with teachers who burn out quickly and then just sustain for the retirement. But, we do better than surrounding schools, so there is that. As long as we keep marketing that we are better than the alternatives, we are doing good...at least we keep telling ourselves that.Teachers need to communicate more with struggling students. When my child struggles I feel that he does not have adequate help at school to practice what has been taught especially in the Math curriculum. Do more pencil and paper work, and less online quizzing. Communicate with parents by sending home weekly folders full of graded papers. Let my kids talk during lunch! The whole lunch time! Work in a 15 minute recess for all kids at Lovett, every day. We bought a house within CPSD so that my kids could attend here. It is wrong on all levels to devote so much time to preparing for standardized testing and such a seriously poor cursive handwriting instruction. There are no professionals available where a child can go and discuss personal problems without fear of DHS involvement. We need counselors in schools to counsel our children.I understand the cost effectiveness of going "paperless" but I feel like I sometimes miss out on things because I missed an email or didnt check the website. Also, email address should be more readily available on each school website for teachers and administrators.I feel overall the school district does a great job. If I am going to suggest something, I

would say some of the older buildings need upgraded and would love to see a dance team added to the list of school activities. I feel we have more than enough to support one.I am very tired of my childs daily education being based on 1 state test given at the end of the year. All we hear as parents is "were trying to get them ready for that test." As a parent, I do not care about my childs score on one test that has no bearing on her daily learning. I do not care one little bit if my child passes that test. I do care, however, if she learns what she needs to know in order to go to the next grade. I care that she is being given questions on her weekly tests about topics that she hasnt learned in order to trick her because "thats going to happen on that state test. She has to know how to handle it." No, she doesnt. Not on a regular Topic test in her classroom. There shouldnt be questions on a test for her everyday learning that are on skills she hasnt been taught yet. Im also tired of every single grade being given on an ipad. There is real data and merit to students using paper and pencil to learn and for assessments. Having a paper test can be much more beneficial to students learning. Trying to become a paperless district is the most ridiculous thing weve ever started. If you want to cut out parent flyers and signup forms and go digital in that respect- go for it. But a paperless classroom is ridiculous. My child also shouldnt be stressed out over a "timed test" in class just because the state test is timed. They give students ample time to complete those state tests - Ive proctored them - Ive seen it. That test shouldnt be forced on them every single day of their regular education. State testing either needs to stop (which we know wont happen), or we need to alter how we prepare our kids for it. And this is not the teachers fault- their pressure is coming from "above." They do their best considering whats expected of them. If our upper administration cares more about a "district grade" than about my childs everyday education, we have a much bigger problem to deal with than facilities and Title I or Title IV money usage.Eliminate teachers that are not growing students. Teachers grades and testing data should be aligned and its not that way at Eastside.Eastside Elementarys teachers do not communicate with parents. I am often unaware of what takes place at school or what is expected of my child. When I do attempt to communicate, I do not receive responses.CPSD should make sustainable improvements to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to prepare our students to compete in the global marketplace. CPSD should create and implement this year a college credit curriculum that allows sophomores, juniors and seniors to take a series of courses that generate an associates degree accredited with a choice of Mississippis community colleges, similar to the programs North Carolina and Texas has. This allows academically eligible students to take tuition-free college courses for credit in the high school and college at the same time. It accelerates completion of college certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees that provide entry-level job skills and/or lead to college transfer credit. CPSD should expand vocational non-college based job skills training AND entrepreneurial training to juniors and seniors. Not all high school graduates have aptitude for college. Some have no interest in attending it. They still need to be able to earn a living wage or better. Welding, carpentry, electrical lineman/electrician, automotive or other vocational training would be particularly helpful. Some need the entrepreneurial push to create businesses. Why not have the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School or Harvard College of Business models implemented to give them a chance to develop ideas into businesses which turn into wealth creation? Our Clinton students deserve this chance as much as any other high school students.Continental tire will surely be bringing in more students. Where will we put them? We are already in portables. I don’t like that my child doesn’t feel good enough when it

I feel like our math program for regular math classes is lacking. It’s not a strong program. I feel like I order to get the strong teachers you must be in advanced classes.I do think that all schools should provide a locker ( after cubbies) for students. The backpacks are very heavy and this is a health issue for some. To carry around that much weight upon your back on each hour- most adults would not desire or be able to for an entire day.I believe that the students should be more than just a test score. I dont think that so much emphasis should be on test scores. I know we are a top notch district, but when a teacher is telling the class EVERYDAY that the state test is the only thing that matters, that is a problem. A child should be more than just a test score. I wish the kids would actually be taught the material needed to help them be successful, rather than to score well on a state test!! I know Excellence is the only option, but making kids stressed out everyday in a class because the teacher is so worried about a state test is ridiculous!!Getting a handle on out-of-district enrollmentCheck residency!! There are many people on affidavit. They DO NOT live in the district. We work hard and pay taxes to attend this great district.Bigger band hall, please! Also, I think parents should be more informed about qualifications for entry into honors classes and be allowed to be more involved in those decisions. As stated before, I believe CJHS desperately needs a facilities upgrade. Lovett could use an upgrade too-especially with the lack of parking/car rider line issues. It is a very dangerous situation right now to be in the car rider line. I understand that there may not be much room available to grow the facilities, but surely someone creative can come up with a way to fix the car rider line situation.

PARENT CLINTON JUNIOR HIGHThere should be a clear cut open door policy. I have tried at least 3 times to sit in on a class during a course of over 2 months and it never happened. The junior high should begin pre-AP and pre-IB courses. Students should have the option to begin AP courses in the 9th grade as other global high schools. An IB program should be created. Clinton is fine for Mississippi. Yet, the vision should be globally aligned. The junior high needs more teachers that are teaching and caring about there students. The district is becoming too focused on scores and losing focus on what is best for the individual student in some areas. The curriculum and speed/pace that a child is expected to perform is not adequate for all children. Children do not all learn at the same pace/level. Too much emphasis is placed on state testing instead of allowing teachers to teach to the child. The state testing does not always match what is being taught in the classroom.Teachers should be monitored. One HS teacher doesnt meet my expections. I wont mention names here.. I overall have been pleased with the district, The CJHS Ambassador Choir instructors love those kids and put so much time into them.Teachers need to communicate more with struggling students. When my child struggles I feel that he does not have adequate help at school to practice what has been taught especially in the Math curriculum. Lessons are paced extremely fast in the elementary schools. Students need more time to practice before moving on to new lessons. Please offer more classes that dont cost an arm and a leg to participate in. When a family has multiple children, the cost of obtaining a well-rounded education skyrockets. Our band halls are too small, period. Way too small. Also, my daughter, who is academically gifted, often complains that Science and History should be offered as Honors classes in seventh and eighth grades, just as Math and English are. She is often frustrated because she doesn’t feel challenged in Science and History, and in addition, those are the only two classes she has that have behavior problem issues.Need more firewall on iPads and MacBook. Social media is an issue for children. It should be blocked from being able to access on laptops so that when parents take away tablets and devices they can’t just pull it up on school devices. This can easily be maintained and blocked.

Not have cookie cutter classes and I would have the high school concentrate more on classes that will actually lead the kids to a career and not just book smarts more hands on learning and more votech opportunitiesI WANT CURSIVE HANDWRITING TAUGHT THOROUGHLY AND COMPLETELY. I know Excellence is the only option, but making kids stressed out everyday in a class because the teacher is so worried about a state test is ridiculous!!Girls home side locker room neededCommunication is key!

I could go on but I will get off my soap box.Check residency!! There are many people on affidavit. They DO NOT live in the district. We

PARENT SUMNER HILLThe kids have become numbers. As long as we keep marketing that we are better than the alternatives, we are doing good...at least we keep telling ourselves that. The junior high should begin pre-AP and pre-IB courses. Students should have the option to begin AP courses in the 9th grade as other global high schools. An IB program should be created. Clinton is fine for Mississippi. Yet, the vision should be globally aligned. The band program(s) are excelling and lack needed practice space. Several band related groups lack practice/performance space. The administration at SHJHS does not understand the rules and regulations in their own handbook. Teachers are out for extended periods of time, and only add more and more busy work to canvas rather than actually teaching. There is a ridiculous amount of homework. Substitute teachers used are very unprofessional.Teachers should be monitored. One HS teacher doesnt meet my expections. I wont mention names here.. I overall have been pleased with the district, The CJHS Ambassador Choir instructors love those kids and put so much time into them.Take a look at all the sports facilities and improve the ones that need it the most, the tennis courts are a disgrace yet the football stadium just got a new turf??? They dont have to cancel their games...Some teachers need to send home extra work for students that are struggling in certain subjectsSchool to parent communication needs work.

Teachers need training on teaching to various learning styles. Please phase out Common Core and incorporate a curriculum that is age appropriate for each grade level. So many parents are dealing with this issue. Our band halls are too small, period. Way too small. Also, my daughter, who is academically gifted, often complains that Science and History should be offered as Honors classes in seventh and eighth grades, just as Math and English are. Some students arent college bound, and they should have a high school career that can help them in the future to do what they want to do - mechanics, drafting, hospitality, etc. I think we need a path to graduation for those students who might not need calculus or AP English to succeed in their future job. Yes, everyone needs basics in English, math, science, government. But not everyone needs college prep classes. The country as a whole needs more workforce training, and what a great head start we could give some of our students if we could offer more of that type of education to those who wont go on to university. We already do such a great job with kids who are into sports or the arts, and our academic stars, lets not forget the rest of our kids who might not fall into those categories!I understand that technology is vital to ones education in the 21st century. However, I spent many years teaching my students to do homework without distraction at their desk. Now, I have had to bring them back to the kitchen to monitor their internet use while doing homework. They spend too much time on the computer and not enough time donig other things. They seem to only know how to do power points and nothing elseI think block schedule is an absolute travesty. I do not believe that more than a couple of objectives can be covered and learned in a class period regardless of length. I think it’s awful that kids have to take on line classes in the summer so it frees up time for them to take classes they need during the year. Most of these issues could be solved by not being on block. As a former teacher who has taught on many blocks, I have yet to see a single one be beneficial to a child’s education.I feel like our math program for regular math classes is lacking. It’s not a strong program. The band hall facilities are inadequate to the size of the program. Please support building new facilities with close collaboration with the band staff.Clinton High needs new desks, and extra powerstrips in each room for computer charging.Bullying policies and disciplinary issues are the big areas of improvement. Must fix major issues at tennis courts. Must fix baseball field playing surface and worn out fencing. Needs to lighten up on homework and teach instead of just assigning work or projects to avoid classroom instruction. Teachers have to consider kids have to have some time to relax every now and then and must understand that kids participate in extracurricular activities. I do believe that with the high volume of student involvement with the band program that the band hall needs a number of improvements especially more space to grow and be more productive.Girls home side locker room neededGetting a handle on out-of-district enrollmentEnforce more diversity in school activitiesDyslexia needs to be provided to all grades. Some kids are not diagnose until later. We should focus on all kids regardless of grade. Yes, programs are provided for elementary but not for high school. Parents have to pay for additional service for high school kids but the school provides the same service for the elementary school. If the school has the program all kids should have the chance to use it. It is hard for parent and kids to have to go to meetings after school for the same program offered to lower elementary. If programs are available in the district is should be available to all kids. As parent, I pay taxes for the program my child should be provided the service regardless of the grade. We need to get this addressed. If we can improve our students that struggle instead we talk about all the honor and AP classes offered in the school. These programs are great but we should focus on helping the kids that are working hard but not in honor due to dyslexia. It is hard as parent to have a smart child but feels bad due to not being in the honors classes. I have explained to my child, you are smarter than any Straight A student. You have more common sense, just because you dont take test well doesnt mean anything. We have got to make all kids feel special. All parents want the best for there children. We all pay taxes so the funds should be divided to help all kids. I do not have gifted or honor child but I have a hard working child that Im very proud of. If we would give a little more attention to the kids that need a little more our district would be over the top.CPSD should make sustainable improvements to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to prepare our students to compete in the global marketplace. We are already in portables.Bigger, more functional band hall. Renovated, updated science labs at CHS.Bigger band hall, please! Also, I think parents should be more informed about qualifications for entry into honors classes and be allowed to be more involved in those decisions.Bigger band facilitiesbetter security and law/rule enforcement; I hear too many stories from my kids about petty theft, drug/substance abuse, and fighting at their schoolsAlong with improvement in fine arts facilities, there needs to be a way to provide school nurses. Class is interrupted when students get sick and teachers are having to handle

instead of a school nurse. There are things the district could do ( offer flu shots to students, teachers) at the school-you have a nursing school right in our community. This was done one year and more people are able to be vaccinated ( very difficult to get off to take even a 15-16 year old to get done)Address the mold issue in the CHS Band Hall and inside the CHS Auditorium.additions to school buildings to keep up with the growth of the schools

PARENT CHS CCCParking for parents at Northside and Eastside, I would think with the land in front of the schools, you could use it for a parking lotNeed another school to help with growth

STUDENT CLINTON HIGHWe need a bigger band hall at the high school, because the high school band is growing.- Our theater department does not have a stage, lights or sound, or any form of storage besides a electrical closet. Although we have a "stage" that the arts are supposed to share, the attache uses it and we dont have access to it. Maybe an arts wing.-OuAs a band member, I believe that our growing program needs an extensive band hall.At Clinton High School, the bathrooms could use some improvement and the Lecture Hall. We need someone to come in and talk to children about life. Yes our education is very important but without the knowledge of how to go about in the outside world you can only get so far with an education if you understand exactly what it is you want and how. to establish in the outside world. We need someone to teach young men how to be respectful towards their peers and adults. Show them right from wrong to help them better themselves for their future.CHS needs to spend some time trying to clean up its school. The building itself is utterly disgusting with bathrooms that make me want to wait till I get home. The A.C. vents has dust caked around them and that is what students are breathing. Discipline is not appropriate and students with bad reputations get away with more that good students. Classrooms desks are falling apart and have cracks in the seats. Teachers care more about test scores (State test, ACT, SAT, ect..) and dont care about the student actually learning knowledgeable information. The grading scale is not appropriate for example I can have quizzes every class period and I will study for them but the "quizzes" will be put in as class work which is worth less that an actual quiz. The parking lot at the high school turns into the great flood when it rains and I cant get into my car without my shoes being absolutely ruined.Everything needs improvementsHearing about all the school shootings that have happened this year in other districts can be frightening to students and staff. More security and cameras should be installed to ensure the safety of all students and staff. Doing regular drug test will also help students feel safer, since drugs can cause bad behavior amongst those that use them. Backpack checks would also be beneficial, as some students can sneak dangerous weapons such as knives and guns in their backpacks. Absolutely nothing is stopping someone from walking into a school and firing a gun. Fixing these security issues would ensure the safety of students and staff.High school should have more bathroomsI feel as though the school could afford to focus a little more on the arts. While things like Attache and band excel, smaller departments like Theatre and visual arts are left with the short end of the deal. The CHS Theatre department in particular really has the potential to succeed if given adequate space to create and rehearse. If the school district is looking for areas to improve, PLEASE consider the Theatre department.I think class sizes should be smaller, I also think that There are too many things blocked on our computers. Like certain words like "bone, oral, etc" words I have to look up for my Human AP class, but nothing will come up because its "Inappropriate" Which is not right in my opinion..

I think that the school district could better improve the facilities for the band/other athletics.Janitors dont keep bathroom soap, paper towels, or tissue available.Make the theatre department bigger and funded more.Putting more money into the arts and supporting them, especially the theatre and choir programs. Because of Attache's extensive schedule and the need for a large rehearsal space, other programs can't use our school auditorium when need be. So, an additional performing space would be great improvement! I'm not downplaying Attache's accomplishments. They deserve to be in the auditorium with all the hard work they do. However, the other programs, specifically our theatre department and our choir program, need an adequate space to perform and rehearse in. Theatre has had to rehearse in a small classroom in preparation for competition, which is done on a large stage. To make sure that the theatre department is successful, we need to rehearse in the same type of space we will be performing in. The theatre department has managed to get numerous awards just from our small practices in a classroom but to accommodate the growth we are experiencing, we need an adequate space to perform in. The choir room (Lecture Hall) needs renovation. Attache uses the official choir room and the choir is forced to be in the outdated lecture hall. Choir has made due with what we have but the room needs serious renovations. The room floods every single time it rains and the floors are beginning to fall apart because of it. If possible, removing the seats in the lecture hall and elevating every other step would help it turn into an actual choir room. Also, re installing the light fixtures would turn into a small performance space for the choir. Essentially, our arts program needs to meet the caliber of the other programs in the state. A lot of other schools in Mississippi have adequate space for all its arts programs. Having this space will foster a sense of identity for the arts programs and I'm sure it will garner community support. I hope that the district takes this into consideration. The future of these programs depends on the support of the district and the community.RestroomsSchool needs to be updated. We could use a better performing arts space. Also i think that a JROTC program would be highly beneficial to our students and it would teach respect and discipline to some students. Most schools have one but we don’t and that is something we should have.sometimes teachers do not respond promptly or at all. Could be a limited experience. The old football field and stadium is an eye sore by the JR High school.Clinton Park is overloaded with kids. Arrow drive needs to be paved, if it is going to be the primary road used for 9 different grades.stop blocking all the websites we need to answer classwork/homeworkThe band hall needs to be bigger. the band has outgrown itThe Clinton High School Band hall needs a major, up to date Band hall that accommodates for the 200 plus students and the up coming students that’s going to do Band in the future. Also Clinton as a district needs better teachers who teach and doesn’t let their personal life get in the way or bring unwanted actions. Clinton could have better bathrooms make to self flush and automatic sinks and towel dispensers to help not spread so many germs. Clinton high school needs a better foundation because I find it crazy I can be in one class and look through cracks in the wall into another. Lastly I think Clinton needs to accomedate for the growing amounts of students because walking through the hallways are crowded and cramped and it’s not big enough for 3 grades at once easily with the class of 2020 they came and the school got smaller. The Clinton Public School District has overpopulated classrooms and tired teachers. Discipline is low in many students, and both students and teachers are low on moral. A typical day in any classroom involves at least one group that talks constantly. There is no tutoring provided; and for students such as myself, tutoring in math subjects are desperately needed at least daily.

The counseling department needs some work. It’s ridiculous at how Unequipped and inadequate for one-on-one time. People are constantly in and out, and it seems as if you’re not really that important. The district should strive towards making our schools a safe place for people of all races, religions, sexualities, (etc.). They should work harder to eliminate peer bullying as well as discrimination from teachers towards students. The education and the teachers. The facilities definitely need to be expanded, especially the music hall. The school needs to build a performing arts center, and needs to support and provide more for other fine arts programs. The school requires better school lunches, better disciplined teachers, new renovations, more engaging parents, and a wider variety of extra curricular activities. The tennis courts are in a very bad state, and this truly sticks out like a sore thumb when outsiders visit Clinton High School. The tennis courts have not been fixed for years now and continue to plague tennis players while other sports thrive with seemingly new additions or facilities every year. It reflects poorly on the high school and more importantly on the District as a whole when visitors come to watch other sports and see a lake instead of a tennis court. It also greatly affects the tennis teams ability to conduct matches at the high school. Only 4 of the 6 courts are even moderately useable and this reflects negatively on Clinton School District. The Theatre department (as mentioned earlier) needs major improvements to their limited spaces. We need a bigger/better/modern band hallWe need a nurses office. We need more time to get to class especially for the purpose of the restroom breakWhile many teachers embrace the 1:1 program, I found a frustratingly large amount of teachers mostly ignored the capabilities of our computers, if not ignore the computers almost entirely. Some teachers merely distributed paper handouts, while others distributed the same handouts digitally via canvas. This isnt the extent, or even really a good test-case, for what our computers can potentially do for the classroom experience.

STUDENT CLINTON JUNIOR HIGHI am concerned about school safety. What is being done to keep us safe? We have not had any drills this year to tell us what to do when a shooter is at the school. Last year at Lovett we were told to put our heads on the desk and that just doesnt feel safe.

Would like to see some of my cheer fees to go towards the football players safety. I would say drop the 5 outfits and bows to practice in and replace with shorts and a tshirt.Newer buildings and buses.

STUDENT LOVETTA janitor that will try to clean the bathrooms a little bit more and keep toilet paper in stockCleaning and bathroomCleaning, assignments, classroom, bathroom cleaningI feel we should have more fun activities like field trips and more equipment outside.Sometimes when I get on my ipad to do school work, most cites are blocked, so it is very hard to find a specific answer sometimes. The air conditioningUnblock some thingsUpdate the bathrooms.Vigilante about bullying

Expanding band and other arts buildings to hold all students comfortablyThe band hall is very small for the rapidly growing organization. It would be very beneficial if we could obtain a larger facility. The high school band hall needs to be expanded so that the band can get bigger and better. To have bigger band halls for the band and more funding for repairing instruments
