Serves 6

Ingredients:Curry4 dried guajillo chillies (Available at Farro Fresh)

2 ancho chillies (Available at Farro Fresh)

3 garlic cloves

1 small onion, chopped

2 fresh red chillies, chopped,

1/2 tsp cumin seed

1/2 tsp dried Mexican oregano

1/4 tsp ground cloves

1 1/2 Tbsp sherry vinegar

1 Tbsp dark brown sugar

1/2 cup water

1.2kg lamb shoulder, diced large

4 fresh tomatoes, chopped

sea salt to taste

serve withTio Pablo tortillas Steamed White Rice

GarnishGarnish with lime zest, fresh coriander leaf, very finely chopped spring onion

Method:1. Toast the guajillo and ancho chillies over

medium, dry heat until they’re smoking and a bit charred on both sides. Set aside

2. Separately toast the onion, garlic and chilliies, making sure each one is smoking and a bit charred before removing from the pan and doing the next one.

3. Combine the charred veges, cumin, oregano, cloves, chillies, brown sugar, water and cider vinegar in a food processor and puree well.

4. Rub half of the spice blend on the meat, and place in a large roasting tray. Reserve the other half of the spice blend for later. Lightly season the meat with salt.

5. Roast the meat in the oven at 160C for about 45 mins.

6. Blend the reserved spices with the fresh tomato.

7. Put into a large pot with the meat, and then add enough extra water to just cover the meat.

8. Stir well and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 60 minutes. It should be very tender.

9. Add more salt if you think it needs it. Place into a serving bowl, garnish with some lime zest and a squeeze of the juice, along with the minced spring onion and some coriander leaves.

10. Serve with steamed rice and soft corn tortillas, allowing a couple per person.

11. For the Tio Pablo tortillas, dip them first in water before heating in a pan or on a very hot griddle, for 20 seconds on each side. To keep them warm for serving, cover with a damp cloth.

Enjoy Fraser.

I’m still deciding whether the new Government scheme of interest free lending is actually going to help society

in the long run or could it just create an expectation of entitlement at the bottom of the cliff. I love the saying ‘Feed a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’

Paula Bennett has just announced that almost 1 million families will be eligible for low or no interest loans under this new Government backed scheme. The purpose is to save them from loan sharks. As a broker our whole goal is to save all clients from paying more interest than they need to, whether it be because of poor loan structures, loan types that don’t meet their needs or simply higher interest rates than necessary, so I completely understand the purpose behind the scheme. Charging

clients up to 10% interest per week to me seems criminal, given that I expect many of these clients now being targeted for the scheme would simply not understand what they are getting into or that they might possibly have any other option.

The loans are for only $1,000 and $5,000 for up to 3 yrs. For those of us living in the greater Ponsonby area and indeed many of my clients, these amounts are usually just all a week’s wages, so it can be difficult for us to really understand and appreciate how a small loan amount could make such a huge difference to their life; however, I do sometimes see clients whose expenses exceed their incomes and have to help them make dramatic changes to their lifestyle to help them get back on track.

So on one hand I am totally in favour of the scheme, and appreciate the difference it may make to their families, on the other hand, after having spent my entire working life assisting clients in the finance industry across both commercial and residential lending is that the real issue is actually centered on each individual person’s relationship with money. It doesn’t matter how little or how much someone earns on both ends of the spectrum, some people have such a poor relationship with money that they do not know how to budget or indeed find

having money very stressful and do their best to get rid of it. In many cases the more someone earns the more they fritter it away on all manner of things.

What I would like to see is money management and finance being a basic subject taught in schools, along with English, Maths, Science, etc. Not just via business studies in the later high school years but as young as intermediate or even primary school. I know of one situation where a teenager got into serious financial strife with a bank in the days of cheque books not understanding the money had to be banked into the account before you wrote out a cheque. She had witnessed her mother paying

her accounts by cheque and thought you just wrote out and bought whatever you wanted and the money miraculously appeared in there. I wonder how many children today think the same thing happens with a credit card?

I applaud the scheme and think it is wonderful idea as long as there are some very clear outcomes and expectations, and people are actually taught how to manage their income and expenses in the future. I would also hope that somehow the knowledge and teaching of good sound financial management is extended to the whole community and not just one segment of our society.

Free loans does it help or send the wrong message?

There are many pitfalls that a lot of people are unaware of when

changing the shareholding structure of their company. Situations can arise that require the shareholding of a company to be altered. The reasons for this could include a shareholder dispute, relationship breakups or a company being restructured. Doing a simple shareholder change can have major tax implications. However it is my experience that most people do not understand this. Given this lack of understanding, it is important that you seek professional advice before undertaking these changes.

So what could happen if a shareholding change is done wrong?

• A company could forfeit its tax losses and/or

• You could pay tax twice on some of your

company’s profits

We have recently had two situations where companies had decided to change their shareholding structures due to restructuring. One company asked for professional advice. The other company didn’t.

The company that sought advice was able to ensure that the company did not have to pay tax

twice on profits when dividends were paid out to its shareholders. A simple phone conversation saved them thousands of dollars.

The company that didn’t seek advice had a large amount of tax losses. Unfortunately, they went ahead and did the shareholder changes believing there would be no issues, how wrong they were. The result of this was the company lost all of its tax losses which were in the thousands of dollars. This could have been avoided if the company had sought professional advice from their accountant beforehand.

Inland Revenue has been taking a closer look at companies and the impact of shareholder changes, particularly with losses. If you think that you can make an error with a shareholding change and get away with it, you are mistaken.

If Inland Revenue finds companies that have not calculated their losses properly due to a shareholder change you can expect penalties

to be applied. Even if the company had no tax to pay!

As we said at the start of this article, seek professional advice before making any shareholder changes. It could save you money!

If you have any questions regarding shareholder changes, please do not hesitate to contact the team at Withers Tsang & Co.

over. This weatherboard and brick facade home features four double bedrooms; the master with ensuite and walk in wardrobe. There are a further two separate bathrooms and a landing area that could be used as study, or sitting area. There are two extra storage closets in the landing area for linen, or for storing study/office supplies

The dining is open plan with a modern kitchen, complete with granite bench top and a walk in butler’s pantry.  For those who like cooking with gas, there is stainless steel gas stove. The hot water and heating are also gas, which means long hot showers for everyone.
